THIS IS NOT A SLAM POEM: On Being Asian American.
“This is not a slam poem because for the first time in my life, I am unashamed of who I am, I am unafraid to say that yes, I wear red white and blue. But I wear red white and blue embroidered with jade silk, accented with the ink from my mother’s calligraphy.”

here’s your local seattle news
Seattle’s historically Black neighborhood could be less than 10% black in the next decade due to gentrification!
A massive developer just paid $30.9 million dollars for 6 acres at the heart of Seattle’s historically Black neighborhood to build condos with Starbucks underneath them!
The heart of the neighborhood has basically been ripped out!
I was JUST going to send you an article on Paul Allen buying the Promenade 23 center. For the sake of conversation, I’m FROM the CD, I’ve lived in the CD since I was 11 years old (I’m old, I watched Mt St Helens blow from my porch) , with brief forays in to other neighborhoods (Ballard and Wallingford). I went to Washington and Meany Middle Schools, (then Ballard HS), I’ve lived several places between 36th and Union, and 18th and Union from childhood well into my adulthood, the CD is my home, I care about the CD. I think Paul Allen buying property for redev is a death knell for the culture of the neighborhood. It’s the complete and utter end. The CD could use a breath of life like Columbia City. It was a bit resisted from the beginning, big money from out of town, but it was culturally sensitive money, the development took root, grew and blossomed in the hands of citizens committed to the preservation and enrichment of the neighborhood. Paul Allen buying property in the CD is NOTHING of the sort and is extremely dangerous of the tech colonization of the city. It’s infuriating.
reblogging for super important commentary.
