This allegorical painting shows affinities with the English Pre-Raphaelites in both style and subject matter. An angelic figure, holding a bow in his right hand and an arrow in his left, points to a group of figures who lie sprawled in anguish. The rainbow that falls on them reflects spiritual awakening (hence the work's title) and the possibility of hope.

Phoebe Anna Traquair, a versatile artist who worked in both paint and embroidery and also created illuminated manuscripts, often incorporated Christian themes into her work. A mural of hers showing the soul's progress to heaven decorated the Mortuary Chapel of the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh.

In 1787, Vigée Le Brun presented 3 portraits of her daughter, Julie, at the French Royal Academy’s Salon, an implicit assertion that her artistic prowess extended far beyond the realm of motherhood.

In this particular work, Julie is depicted both in profile and facing forward, her reflection captured in a mirror. This deliberately improbable perspective creates a striking dual image, evoking earlier allegorical representations of Sight and engaging with contemporary artistic debates on the nature of reality and illusion in painting.
