Her Mysterious Benefactor - Chapter 13
âTheyâre here more often than theyâre not,â Samantha said. She and Corey had divided the stew into bowls and had covered them up, bringing them to the castle to share with Baron and Damien. The four of them were now sitting around the table in the castleâs dining hall, enjoying the stew and discussing the matter.
âYet their intentions seem good,â Damien remarked. âAnd their cooking skills are, well, damn.â
âI just wish theyâd make themself known to you,â Baron said with a shake of his head. âAll this secrecy and mystery...itâs just getting out of hand.â
Before either of them could say anything, a guard approached the door and looked towards Baron. âYour majesty,â he said, âsomebody is here who wishes to meet with you. Alone,â he added, eyeing the other three.
Baron sighed and set his bowl down, standing up. âIâll be back,â he said before heading out, leaving Samantha alone with Damien and her brother.
âSo, Damien,â asked Corey, looking over at him. âHow are things in the Stone Kingdom? Your family was running with a pack in the mountains, right?â
âYeah, we were. Things were fine last I left them,â Damien replied with a shrug. âThe pack life wasnât for me. Iâm more of a city guy, I guess, so coming back here made the most sense.â
âRight,â Corey replied with a nod. âAnd coming back here didnât happen to have anything to do with the fact that Samantha had just come back here, did it?â
âCorey!â Samantha said, reaching over and smacking her brotherâs arm. Damien chuckled slightly, shaking his head.
âItâs fine, Samantha,â he told her in a gentle tone before looking at Corey. âI didnât know Samantha was back, Corey. Had no clue. Thatâs what we call a happy coincidence,â he said with a shrug and a smile. Corey, seemingly satisfied with Damienâs answer, nodded and sat back to focus on his stew.
It was a few minutes before Baron returned. Accompanying him was none other than the dark-haired, blue-eyed man whoâd given the injured Baron his cart and had gone to save Damien on Samanthaâs behalf. Samanthaâs eyes widened.
âDamien, Corey, Samantha, this is Finn,â said Baron, gesturing towards his guest. âHe works for the Undertaker, in the Demon Kingdom. Samantha, I believe you two have already met...?â
Samantha nodded slightly. âYes,â she said in a soft voice. âHe helped me save you and Damien...â
âYes, thatâs right,â said the man, Finn. He had a strong accent and a chipper, friendly-sounding voice. âI just stopped back in to pick up my cart and figured Iâd stop and see if you needed any assistance with those vampires. Nasty things, them.â
âHey, now,â Corey said, holding his hands up in a manner that was half-joking and half-defensive.
âSorry, sorry. Not you. You seem fine,â Finn told him with a laugh.
âSure I do,â Corey said with a laugh.
âSo, Finn,â asked Damien, leaning forward on the table and gesturing for the man - demon? - to sit down, âwhat do you bring to the table?â
âOh, I have a few things to offer,â Finn told them with a grin. âWe were dealing with some unwanted vampires down in the Demon Kingdom for a while, courtesy of that damned Vampire Queen.â
âVampire Queen?â Baron asked, perking up slightly at hearing this. âWho the hell is the Vampire Queen?â
âExactly what she sounds like,â Finn said with a shake of his head. âFancies herself the leader of all the Empireâs vampires. Our suspicion is that sheâs after a throne since she seems to target royalty. It wouldnât surprise me one bit if sheâs trying to turn the Wolf Kingdom into the Vampire Kingdom by taking you out, your majesty.â
âWell, shit...â Baron said. Samanthaâs gaze, meanwhile, shifted straight to Corey.
âDo you know anything about this Vampire Queen?â she asked him. âI mean, your group is literally known throughout the Empire. It wouldnât surprise me if she wanted you in her pocket.â
âI have no idea,â Corey responded, shaking his head rapidly. âI can ask when I get back, but that doesnât help us now. Right now, we should be focusing on what we can do about Ellering and his vampires - they could be working for this Vampire Queen for all we know. Finn, what were you saying you had to offer?â
âRight,â Finn said, a slight smirk tugging at the edges of his lips. âWell, when we were dealing with our vampire problem, the Undertaker and his little apprentice, Sybil, put together a potion that would be toxic to vampires. We coated our weapons with it, we had our humans ingest it so their blood would be toxic to the vampires...and it worked.â
âUgh. That explains why we got sick the last time we were through the Demon Kingdom,â Corey said with a shudder.
âSorry, mate. You must have been caught in the crossfire,â Finn said with a chuckle.
âI believe that we have something similar, though we have only a small vial that weâre saving for when itâs most needed,â Baron said, and Finn raised an eyebrow at this.
âWhere did you get it?â he asked, sounding most intrigued.
âIt was given to Samantha as a gift,â Baron said, nodding towards Samantha.
âBy whom?â Finn asked, looking now towards Samantha.
âWe donât know,â Damien said. âIt was left anonymously.â
âThatâs...odd,â Finn said with a slight shake of his head. âWeâve not shared it with anyone, and I donât believe weâve had any go missing. But anyhow, I digress - I brought some of it with me figuring it would help. If youâre planning to make a move against them, youâd be fools not to use it.â
âHow much will this cost us?â Baron asked, looking skeptical.
âWe can discuss that later. I wonât break your bank though,â Finn told him with a laugh.
After that, they parted ways. Samantha and Corey headed home for a nap. Corey had had a long trip, while Samantha was just tired. She woke up before her brother, and she decided to go get some fishing done. It had been a while since sheâd been out fishing. She barely got around the corner from the house before running into Finn on the street. He gave her a polite smile.
âSamantha, good to see you again,â he said to her.
âYou too,â she told him with a nod. âYou find a place to stay yet?â
âThe King has graciously allowed me use of one of the castle guest rooms,â Finn replied. âItâs a much smaller castle than the Undertakerâs, so I appreciate that heâs letting me occupy some of his limited space.â
âWell, itâs Baron,â Samantha said with a shrug and a smile. âHe doesnât need a lot of space, really.â
âI suppose that makes sense,â Finn replied. âSo, where were you headed?â
âI was going fishing,â Samantha said with a smile. âDid you want to walk with me?â
âI wouldnât mind that at all,â Finn told her, and the two started walking together.
âSo...what is it exactly that you do for the Undertaker?â Samantha asked curiously as they walked.
âOfficially Iâm a diplomat, but just between us, Iâm being groomed to take over the throne one day,â Finn said with a smile. âThe Undertaker doesnât like to say so, since heâs always worried about people perceiving him as weak, so planning for a time after heâs gone is something he tries not to talk about.â
âI suppose that makes sense,â Samantha said with a nod. âSo when the Undertaker dies, youâll become King?â
âThatâs the plan,â Finn replied with a nod.
âDoes that mean youâre a demon, then?â she asked, and he nodded.
âYes,â he replied. âWell, half-demon, that is. Iâm also half-elf.â
âI donât know much about demons,â Samantha commented, finding herself a little curious. A slight smirk toyed at Finnâs lips.
âWell,â he replied, âI donât know much about werewolves.â
Samantha laughed softly, nodding. âThatâs fair,â she replied. âWell, uh...they turn into wolves on the full moon. Really strong ones - like Baron, for example - can transform at will. They can learn to control themselves when theyâre in their wolf form but it takes years of practice.â
âYou say âtheyâ as if you yourself are not one...?â Finn questioned, and Samantha nodded slightly.
âIâm only half-werewolf,â she replied. âMy werewolf half doesnât come out at the full moon, but the power of the blue moon is enough to make it come out, so I only transform on the second full moon of the month.â
âThereâs a blue moon this month, though,â Finn said, and Samantha nodded.
âYep, and Iâm dreading it with everything I have,â she said with a laugh. âItâs been a couple years, though, so I guess itâs time.â
Finn eyed her curiously. She could practically see the thoughts racing through his mind in those blue eyes, but for a few moments he said nothing. âSo if it takes years of practice to control oneself...â
âYeah, Iâm like a ten-year-old, but full-sized,â Samantha replied with a nod. âItâs generally a disaster. When I was working for King John he actually had a special space that was custom-built for werewolves and he let me use it when I transformed. It basically kept me restrained and unable to, you know, go wild and eat people. I still havenât asked Baron if he has anything like that, though.â
âYou probably should,â Finn murmured thoughtfully. âDoes it hurt? When you transform, I mean.â
âBy the time youâre around twenty or so years old, itâs not supposed to hurt any more,â Samantha said. âThatâs what Baron said, and Corey, and everyone else. I think thatâs an exposure thing, though, because for me it always hurts.â
âThatâs a shame,â Finn said softly.Â
âWhat about you? You still havenât told me much about demons,â she said.
âThereâs not much to say. Weâre nowhere near as interesting as werewolves. We have extremely dark minds and it takes a great deal of work to suppress the urges and temptations we feel,â he explained. âThose who can control it, though, are deemed the strongest of us, which is why the Undertaker is King.â
âCan you control it?â she asked.
âYes,â Finn replied with a nod, giving her a smile. âThe Undertaker has said that heâs never seen somebody with such an innate ability to control their dark side. I believe itâs because of my elven blood, but he insists that it makes no difference. A demon is a demon, as far as heâs concerned.â
âDo you have any powers or abilities? Or are you just, you know...humans with darkness?â she asked him.
âThere are lots of abilities that come with being a demon,â Finn replied with a nod. âWe can use the shadows to travel great distances in short times. We can shroud ourselves in darkness so weâre blurred or hidden from the vision of others. Weâre strong and weâre fast. The problem is that the more we use our powers, the more the darkness affects us, and the more we must work to resist it.â
Samantha was quiet as she listened. She was no longer thinking about Finn or about demons in general - all she could think of was her mysterious benefactor. Able to travel great distances using the shadows? Able to shroud themselves in darkness to hide from others? From everything Finn was saying, it sounded like her mysterious benefactor was, in fact, a demon.
âSamantha?â asked Finn, and she blinked in surprise, looking over at him.
âSorry, I was just...thinking,â she said softly.
âI do that, too,â Finn replied, reaching over and putting a gentle hand on her back as they walked. Samantha wasnât sure why she felt a fluttering in her heart at his touch.
Finn wound up spending some more time with her while she fished. They sat and talked about all sorts of things. He told her about his life in the Demon Kingdom working under the Undertaker, and she told him about her time working for King John, and now her time back home. She told him about growing up with Damien, about Coreyâs choice to forsake his werewolf blood to become a vampire, and about her hopes and dreams to one day attend the university.
Eventually, he said he had to be on his way, so he said goodbye and off he went. Samantha stayed a short while longer, but she found that she was missing his company. It didnât help that she was also disconcerted by the newfound knowledge that her mysterious benefactor might be a demon. She decided that she should head back, and she made it back to town with her fish just in time to see Baron and Finn walking together. Both men grinned when they saw her.
âSamantha!â Finn called out, waving his hand a bit. With a smile on her face, she headed over to them.
âLong time, no see,â she told Finn jokingly, and he laughed.
âLikewise,â he replied.
âWe were just talking about you, actually,â Baron said, and Samantha raised an eyebrow.
âOnly good things, I hope...?â
âOf course,â Baron said with a laugh. âFinn pointed out to me that thereâs a blue moon approaching, so we were just discussing what might be suitable to keep you...well, contained.â
âAh, yes,â Samantha murmured, nodding slightly. She wasnât sure if she should be annoyed or appreciative that heâd gone to Baron without consulting her, though she had a feeling that she was verging on the latter. It was sweet of him to be concerned about her despite having only just met her.
âWe can discuss it later if youâd like,â Baron told her. âFinn had a few suggestions, some of which I quite liked.â
âYes, letâs,â she told him with a nod. âRight now I just want to get these fish home before they have the chance to stink everything up.â
âLet me get that for you,â Finn offered, stepping forward and taking the bag of fish from her. She softly thanked him and the three of them started walking towards Samanthaâs house.
They didnât talk much along the way there. When her house was in sight, though, they saw that there was something pinned to her front door - a large, folded-up piece of paper. Baron and Samantha exchanged a knowing look and Samantha lightly jogged ahead of them a few paces to reach the door before they did.
âWhatâs that?â Finn asked as she pulled the paper down and opened it up.
âA map,â Samantha said as she looked at it. It was a map of the area, including the border. There was a circle drawn on it in red, and at the bottom of the map there was a familiar signature.
