Monday Night Fantasy : Arpeggio
Scheherazade Barker was born to a wealthy family that owns and operates a series of farms in the Cieldalaes island chain. From a young age, she had a knack for white magic, displaying an affinity for wind and water with a special affinity for the healing arts. When she was 5 years old, she walked in on her parents trying to save the life of her favorite aurochs, who was bleeding out during the birthing process. In a fit of emotion, she awakened to her affinity for water and wind magic and used it to staunch the flow of blood and maintain oxygen levels across the body of the aurochs, turning an almost certain death by exsanguination into a long but smooth recovery for her favorite animal.
Wanting to broaden her horizons and provide better services as the farm healer, she put away her shepherd's crook and secured passage to the Arcanist college in Limsa Lominsa. During her studies and field research, she discovered she was a Warrior of Light, a mythical hero that can adopt the abilities of different jobs based on the soul stones she collects. Suddenly, Scheherazade had her horizons explode before her. She tried the life of a samurai, but she was never of a martial bent. Then, she tried the life of a Black Mage, but never had any talent for destruction. She tried being a Monk, and while her introspective nature and prodigious strength from her farmhand upbringing did shine through in Monk aptitude, she her one and only passion was and forever would be the healing arts, so she continued her studies.
During the Norvrandt Crisis, her talents with light and healing reached their peak as she absorbed the power of the Lightwardens. Old scars healed, she felt refreshed, renewed… restless. She lost control of her light powers and was nearly consumed by them. This was a wakeup call for her. She always relied on her light affinity in her healing arts and it almost killed her in an explosion of radiant energy. Without the ability to rely on her affinity for healing magic, she found herself relying on Alphinaud for tasks that he usually asked of her, and that stung. Her calling, however, would not be silenced, whether her light powers returned to normal or not. With that determination, Alphinaud and Allisae recommended their Alma Mater, the Studium of Old Sharlayan.
When she returned to the Source, she transferred her Arcanist College credits to the Studium of Old Sharlayan, but her studies didn't last long. Unfortunately, her exploits in the First did little to delay the end of Eithyris, and the Final Days began when the Garleans invented technology allowing them to artificially temper people en masse. Determined not to feel as powerless as she did during the Norvrandt Crisis, she traded her Scholar's tomes for the surgical array of the Sage.
In her services during the Final Days, the Scions discovered that the light infusions she received in Norvrandt were mechanically similar to tempering, and the techniques used to purge Scheherazade's light corruption could be used to free enslaved minds from tempering, but could only be executed on one patient at a time per three practitioners, and that is what Scheherazade did during and between the events of Endwalker. One person she rescued was a Rogadyn Gunbreaker named Eris Jade. Scheherazade felt a special kinship to Eris, and when she retired from adventuring, she invited Eris to return with her to the farm in the Cieldalaes, where their relationship blossomed.
But Scheherazade's training as a healer never stopped. She now knew how to mend bodies without simply pumping wind and water magic into them. Her surgical skills and knack for teaching allowed her and Eris to increase productivity on the farm. Scheherazade even pioneered a surgical technique. By sedating a livestock animal, surgically removing the cuts of meat, and using her healing affinity to restore the lost biomass, the Barker-Jade farm ushered in a new era of ethical food production. However, as a Warrior of Light, her duty of care did not begin and end with healing and agriculture.
When time came for the Turali rite of succession, each contestant was allowed to select an entourage. Wuk Lamat wanted Scheherazade. She was reluctant, but Eris saw this as an opportunity to restart her career as an adventurer with a working vacation. The Jade Protection Agency is founded, and the duo set off from the docks of Old Sharlayan for Tulliyolal.
