Simon acts as referee to a game of calvinball on the ship and he cannot help but notice things he never had before.
Days like this were often far and few in between and because of this they took advantage of it in every way they can. Slow days on Serenity, where they did not have to worry about their next pay or having to stock up, were practically unheard of. But after the heist in Ariel, well, needless to say they now had the money to lay low for a while. To relax. It was a strange notion on its own and often enough the crew found it nearly impossible to ' take a day off. '
Before it would be the only thing they wanted. Any change they got to slack off, they took it. But now that they actually had the time to do so, they had no idea what to do with it. Sometimes they sat around the table playing a game of poker with a worn out deck; Simon sometimes watched, sometimes he joined them. When they weren't playing cards, they were idling about doing nothing in particular. Who knew that free time was a curse?
Now, they had no idea why they did not think about this before, but they really should have. Surprisingly enough, it was the doctor who suggested they let out their pent up energy through a game of hoop ball. Though, his exact words went somewhere along the lines of, "Why don't you guys play that barbaric game where you all fight over a ball to go into a hoop?" If that was not the smartest thing Simon said all week, Mal would have called him an idiot and to shut up. But since it was, in fact, the smartest thing he had said, he was spared the scolding--though Jayne still believed him to be an idiot either way.
