requested by: frozengrace characters: regina and cain pairing: ice-puppy alliance rating: k summary: he was her knight in shining armor. he was supposed to protect her. but how can he do that now?

         "Out of my way!" She could not be bothered with appearances or holding up her image as a Princess. She could not be bothered to be polite and collective, especially now. When the nurse refused to budge, Regina's mauve hues narrowed on the slightly taller woman. "Did you not hear me? You will do as I say or you will rue the day." For all her spoiled brat-like nature, she was always gentle and caring when dealing with the help, but her emotions had gotten the best of her. It had consumed her entirely and for once she did not care about being a Princess. She did not care about being a ruler.

                            She was a lover. A wife. A mother. And she was worried about her husband--and she did not understand why they were still standing in her way!

       There was hesitance in the woman's eyes but she finally conceded. Nodding her head solemnly, the head-nurse looked down and stepped to the side, knowing very well that she could not get in her way. There was sympathy in her eyes as Regina brushed on by, the sound of her heels filled the room, eyes falling on Cain almost immediately. He was curled up on his side, and as far as she could tell, he was fast sleep. A soft smile touched her lips before she padded forward. "Dumb ass," she muttered quietly, hand reaching out to push back his dark hair.  

        When her husband stirred, her hand drew back in a small gasp. Tears pooled in her eyes but she had managed to fight them off. Reaching for his hand, she folded both of his in her own. "Cain?" Forcing herself to calm down, a smile touched her lips, relief washing over her. When she had gotten a call that Cain was in the infirmary from suddenly passing out, she had literally dropped what she was doing and hurried over, expecting the worse.

        "What happened, did you slip and fall again? -- You big clutz." Laughing quietly, she lifted her knee to the bed edge, as if to crawl into the bed with him, but stopped when his hand pushed against her shoulder. "What are you doing?" Brows pulled together in confusion, lips left slightly agape. Something was wrong, she could feel it, but she was having a hard time figuring out what. However, meeting his crimson gaze, she felt a small pang in her chest.

        He always looked like a puppy to her. There was just something about him that read ' adorable little pup. ' But the puppy-esque look he wore now was off. It did not fit him. He looked like a lost dog on the street and not even in the good way. There was an obvious look of confusion in his eyes when he met her gaze, and the hand on her shoulder only seemed to push her back further until both her feet were forced to the floor.

                           "I'm sorry," he spoke out, using the same hand to press his palm against his brow, and by the tone of his voice, he earnestly meant it. "I don't--I don't know who you are."

        "What do you mean, Cain?"

                                "I'm sorry."

                                                     "This isn't funny, Cain."

                                                                          "I'm sorry."

           What made matters was the fact that he meant it. He had no idea why, but he truly was sorry.
