“Not everyone has the privilege required to seek a diagnosis and medical treatment” and “Claiming to have conditions with zero confirmation from actual medical professionals harms both you and the communities you’re claiming to be a part of” are two statements that can and should coexist. Y’all if you think you have something then just say you THINK you have it, it’s not that hard.
I tend to think of it in terms of “if a certain framework helps you, then use it. If resources meant for a specific disorder help you, then you should be able to use them regardless of if you have said disorder or not.” Diagnoses are really just there to provide a treatment plan, that’s all they’re really good for. A diagnosis is definitely not required to just live your life with the thing and I don’t think you should need a diagnosis or even a medical professional’s opinion to say you have it. A lot of medical professionals aren’t even trained to spot a lot of shit, like complex dissociative disorders. Hell, a lot of medical professionals don’t even believe they’re a real thing! You know yourself best, if everything you’re experiencing lines up with the disorder you’re looking into, there’s a good chance you have it, and looking into resources for that disorder to try and help ease symptoms is a perfectly fine thing to do. And if it doesn’t help, then that’s fine. Maybe you don’t have it or maybe that specific resource/technique isn’t for you. Being wrong isn’t an irredeemable crime. You should be allowed to be wrong. The only real problem with saying you have a disorder when you don’t actually have it is the potential for misinformation, and I do acknowledge that. Misinformation is obviously bad but I don’t really fault people for spreading misinformation about their experiences as long as they are willing to be open-minded about corrections.
I am obviously biased tho as a DID system that isn’t diagnosed and never will be. I didn’t need a medical professional to tell me I had it, I was able to figure it out on my own and most of my treatment was on my own. I just don’t think you should bar people from saying they have something they know they have just because they haven’t consulted a medical professional about it. Obviously tread with caution, don’t rush things, but you shouldn’t need a doctor to confirm something like that if you don’t even have access to one in the first place and you’re sure you have it. If you’ve done your due diligence, then say you have it, I don’t care if a doctor was involved in that or not.
You absolutely do NOT know yourself best when it comes to mental or physical health(but esp mental). Personal bias is real and it heavily impacts the way you view yourself and by extension your health. I agree that ppl should be able to treat themselves however they see fit, but that doesn’t mean they can just run around saying they have something with literally zero confirmation. Ppl always bring up how SOME doctors aren’t trained on every disorder known to man, but that’s what specialists are for. Obviously your general practitioner isn’t gonna know everything about DID or likely a lot of psychology at all bc that’s not their specific field. As little knowledge as some doctors have, regular people have 10x as little, we are not professionals, we haven’t gone to school for it, all we can do is google stuff and guess. Slapping a lab on yourself is harmful, even if it comes from a good place; bc like you said, diagnosis is really only good for determining professional treatment plans so there’s no reason to do that if you’re not seeing a professional anyway. It’s not a crime to be wrong, but that doesn’t mean it’s ok to essentially lie to yourself and everyone around you just bc you want a label. Saying you suspect it has the same effect, just say you suspect it.

when and why the fuck did so many of the big bloggers across all of these communities forget the saying "you are white first before you are anything else". i feel like so many of these people who spout bullshit about these topics and let their white privilege show it's ass in full force have completely fucking forgotten about that concept and that is why they get so fucking mad when people point it out, which is why it pisses me off so much to see these people fucking defending the shit that they do.
You are white first before you are trans. You are white first before you are disabled, or queer, or anything else. Your privilege is in fact determined by your skin color, and YES, that means you cannot and should not be giving your fucking opinion on shit like raceplay.
