So lesbians don’t have a lot of characters we can claim. So we have to claim them for ourselves. So I’ve decided to claim Mabel Pines as one of us. I don’t need actual reasons to back up this but I like to write so I’ll give you an essay.
Yes, Mabel seems like she’s boy crazy. So you might be asking how can I say she doesn’t like boys based on that. Well, there’s such a thing as comphet and Mabel’s crushes totally read like comphet to me. So that isn’t a reason for me to not see her as a lesbian.
All of Mabel’s crushes seem kind of shallow. She seems to have a crush on most of the boys she meets. She seems to have these feelings without ever knowing the boys at all. I think this is because she doesn’t really have feelings for them. She just wants to because she thinks that she should. Most of her peers are probably starting to show interest in boys which would probably make Mabel feel like she should be having them too. So she convinces herself she does by telling herself she likes almost every boy she interacts with. Also, a common lesbian experience is to have apparent crushes on unobtainable men because you don’t want to date a man so you’ll know you’ll never end up in a relationship with them. When I thought I was into guys I claimed I had crushes on male celebrities that people claimed were hot or tried to tell myself I had crushes on my close friends because I wanted to have male crushes so I could be like everyone else.
I don’t think Mabel really knows she likes girls. She’s young enough that she might not be very knowledgeable about LGBT+ topics. She probably doesn’t really realize liking girls is an option even if she does likely have some knowledge about gay things. Heteronormativity makes it really hard to consider anything rather than liking the opposite sex. Even if Mabel is aware that she likes girls she might be scared to act on it out of fear of rejection and negative reactions or because of internalized homophobia. It’s also very hard to realize you aren’t into guys when you’re so strongly expected and conditioned into liking them. I knew I liked girls starting in September of my freshman year and I didn’t realize that I didn’t like boys until January of my sophomore year. I had never had a proper crush on a baby and only really had feelings for girls but it did not click in my head that not liking them was an option until I got a chance to talk to some other lesbians about it.
So yeah this essay is full of projection but that’s fine. I want a character I relate to strongly to be a lesbian like me so I see her that way. I don’t need this essay to justify it but writing this was a good experience.
