Aurora couldn’t help but let out a grin, seeing one of her closest friends. “Just telling me I’m doing alright will be the best. I’m still scared I’m going to fuck her up,” She admitted, “Well, you still are doing a great job with him.”

           ender placed a hand on her shoulder and spoke each word very clearly so there was no room for misinterpretation. “you’re doing alright mate.” although on the subject of his own nephew he was not so confident, but for her sake he offered a small smile. “yeah, yeah, alright. look what else are you looking to get in this place? because there is a stubby back home in my fridge with my name on it.”

kentsalinger:

“Nineteen is a tough age too,” Kent mentioned. “Being a teenager is generally hard but after high school when you are trying to figure out what you want and all of your friends are leaving to attend college.” Kent struggled a lot when he was a teenager; mostly with social situations but boy did he hate high school.

           “i suppose,” he said, there was a sort of finality to his words as ender reached for his coffee. once again falling into the dangerous habit of pushing the thought to the back of his mind to think on later, which really meant that he was going to try to avoid it at all cost. “and yourself? any nieces or nephews?” he said, thinking it too bold to assume that his present, who seemed young enough, was father to anyone.

“That is good to know. Sadly I don’t plan to need surgery at any point or at least not in the near future,” Zara smirked. “Definitely playing into some stereotypes but of course those can be found in some holiday homes. My parents do have a chalet up in the French Alps but there aren’t any silver platters there because they keep all the silver and china back in London,” she teased. “So are you trying to avoid my invitation, babe? Because while you haven’t said no, you also haven’t said yes.” Zara jokingly pointed outed. 

           “silver and china in london, not the chalet up in the french alps. right. yes, that really sets that stereotype straight.” he grinned into the coffee mug as he brought it to his lips. 

she wasn’t wrong. he was tip-toeing around the invitation, not because he thought her ill company but more because he wasn’t sure he could commit to any particular time. seemed like as of late if he wasn’t at the hospital he was out doing some dirty work for his associates. but then entered a dangerous thought, the question of what was the worse that could happen? and suddenly ender found himself accepting her invitation, “er, yeah sure, who am i to say no to a cheap beer.”

“That’s about the only French most people that learn I’m French know.” She laughed. “Aussie blokes, as if that didn’t sound just as funny.” Len chuckled, teasingly. “Your land, yes. Been there quite a few times. I’m actually going in July again, gotta write some piece on beaches good for surfing.” Helena explained with a soft gesture. “Also going to Ireland in August for the same purposes. Most people don’t even know there are decent waves over there, but yep, they exist.”

           “yeah, well, a lot of things i say are very funny apparently, or so i have been told.” ender had neatly placed the blame on his accent, although equal blame could be on his lack of grace and articular speech. “july huh? well in that case you’d wanna stay around the northern part of the country darl, because the only thing you’ll be catching at the beach down the southern states is a cold and that isn’t much fun for anyone, believe me.” that was speaking from years freezing in the backwaters of victoria. 

“so a surfing trip in the winter of australia and the autumn of ireland,” this made him chuckle, “you really know how to pick ‘em, don’t you love?”

in a day’s work || ender + noah

          ender hadn’t even the chance to change out of his scrubs, although it what he wore that made him stand out in the stark hospital corridor but rather his towering 6 foot 5 frame. 

it was a long afternoon shift that was only made a little bit better by the promise of a chilled stubby and some grub to tame the beast that was now his stomach— if fate proved kind, he might even share the company of his nephew. that is, if he wasn’t already off bloodying his fist at god knows where. the cardboard coffee cup was supposed to signify the commencement of that quiet night fantasy turned reality. much like the garbage that sat on their patient’s plate, the staff coffee didn’t stray from the same bland quality but he endured, and watched the hand of his watch creep closer to his freedom hour.

but all good things must end, and this particular good thing ended with his pager spouting the geelong football team song and a message. shit. just as the marquee text slid past the last period, a woman’s voice came over the hospital PA. she sounded just as tired as he felt. “dr. kenway to the ER. dr. kenway to the ER.” he let out a breath and looked down at his coffee. not quite finished. “dr. kenway.” he looked up just to see a silhouette of a woman turninh a corner. a nurse. she had been running. he opened his mouth to say that he heard the call and is on his way but she beat him to it. “gunshot wound. the ambulance are on their way here.”

“That’s good French.” She laughed, nodding teasingly. Helena was used to that much French spilling from people’s lips whenever she spoke of her origins. “But see, French men have a very specific kind of charm, doesn’t work for everybody. It’s not like Hispanic men, those could get everyone if  they wanted.” She spoke knowingly, with a firm nod. “Larrikins?” She chuckled, raising her eyebrows. “In my opinion, most people can rub others off after a couple of pints. But I had more fun in your land than I did in most places, good people and good beer everywhere.”

            “i bloody hope so, because that’s about the only french i know.” ender answered her with a grin though his eyes were suddenly very interested in his coffee at her praise of the hispanic charm. obviously they were in the company of two very different groups of hispanic men. but in ender’s particular line of work, outside of his hospital affairs, people were usually less charming, regardless of race. “sorry--aussie blokes.” he said, as if that gave some meaning to the definition of the word. “my land? if you wanna talk about the owners of that land, you’re speaking to the wrong bloke. my ancestors are irish convicts, my land is almost on the other side of the planet.”

“Nineteen,” Kent repeated with a nod of his head. He was thankful for the man’s blunt statement because he wouldn’t have been able to figure out that answer through his lyrical statements. He enjoyed analyzing poetry or a book but not dissecting someone’s words. Kent found himself doing that often enough with how out of it he was with most of the people in his generation and just rather choosing his own company over his peer. “So he is in college then?”

            “that would be the dream, mate.” he said, somewhat defeated by the reality of his nephew’s situation. “he’s certainly got the grades and the score for it.” with the backing of ender’s other occupation (though a little less legal than his job at the hospital, it certainly paid a lot better) college tuition was a nonissue. “only problem is he takes a lot more after me than what i would have liked. there’s no telling what’s on that kid’s mind, let alone what he wants to do next.”

“I think hospitals would be shutting down like crazy if that shit happened in real life,” Zara smirked. “But good to know you are doing all the good and ethical work. Reassure me you won’t be losing your license and if I tragically need surgery then I won’t be operated on someone caring more about who they are banging in the on-call room, babe.” Zara couldn’t help but tease the man since it how she operated: teasing and flirting. “Would it change your answer if I said it wasn’t my first time?” Zara jokingly questioned. “But really us accented people should stick together, babe. Reminds me of home and the holiday homes.”

            “well considering the fact that i have no intention of losing my license anytime soon, and also the fact that the stuff that happens in grey’s anatomy remain in the realm of fiction, i think the odds of you surviving surgery is pretty high.” he returned in jest. “holiday homes? do those come with butlers that serve your breakfast on silver platters or am i just playing into the rich folk stereotypes?”

There it was, his smile. In the end, it was all Helena wanted to see. People often went to her shop to just read, or be quiet for a while. But if she saw a gloomy face, she just had to somehow change that. “Your call.” She nodded, sipping from her own mug some more. His reaction to her words made her laugh wholeheartedly, how so very clueless he seemed for a moment. “Me? I’d never.” She teased, still chuckling. “I’m just naturally charming. It’s the French blood.” The blonde provoked with a soft shrug.

        “french blood?” he said, unsure whether that had anything to do with anything but he humoured her nonetheless. “well pardon me mademoiselle.” and that was about all the french ender could spout out without making a fool of himself. even then, to say that his french accent was poor was a very generous way to put it. “i don’t know, i met this one french fella some way back. he didn’t seem much like a charmer to me.” although he imagined it was difficult for anyone to be charming in between throwing fists at each other... but she didn’t need to know that. “although I have been told that we larrikins can sometimes rub people off the wrong way, especially after a couple o' pints.”

      —☤ Ethan listened to the other diligently while neutralizing his features to become void of any emotion, perhaps a type of mechanism the nurse used whenever something serious was about to be discussed. He understood the male’s distraught because he was the SAME. Workers on the hospital district had to be almost stoical through the different trials of death as they appeared, yet when the victims were YOUNG—- all matter of coldness melted away. The male in the scrubs took a deep breath running a hand down the side of face feeling the stubble along his jaw, before giving a sympathetic gaze. ❝ Mine’s seven. ❞ Ethan responded thinking of his own niece Emma, whom he would risk anything to keep her safe and happy. ❝ It never gets easier, man. Even the toughest go crazy. ❞ The nurse ironically thought of the small church the hospital had on its third floor with a chuckle. ❝ Makes you wonder what kind of sick fuck would make those kinds of decisions, you know. ❞

            “seven,” ender grinned, recalling memories of when tommo was seven. when his sister was still alive. it made him smile. “i'd keep a close eye on yours if i were you. blink twice and they’re suddenly nineteen and screaming at ya to stay out of their room until their blue in the face.” this was not an uncommon scene in the their little house for two. most of the time ender wanted to tear his hair out, but now all he could think about was what his patient’s father would give to be able to relive that scene with his own son. ender shook his head. that was the thing about his other job. working with the mob for as long as he did, ender’s learned to stop wondering a long time ago. “yeah well, no use torturing yourself about it. death happens. when you work at a hospital for long enough, you’d think that you’d get used to it.”

“Oh,” Kent said in mild shock because he really was just grasping at straws when he said that. Kent needed to say something after the unpredictable physical contact and it ended up being true. “How old is he then?” Kent asked unsure if this topic was on he should be avoiding or continuing with it like he was.  

             “old enough to know what’s bad for him, but still too young to have the good sense not to go after it.” he had a feeling that thomas’ liability to impulse and poor judgement was something he inherited more from ender than his sister. the surgeon turned to his new company. perhaps speaking in riddles was probably best saved for when they were a little more acquainted. “he’s nineteen.”

“That is probably true,” Zara smirked. “From what I know they have tons of sex in the on call rooms, they ruin medial trials, and endure at least two insane life threatening events a year. Ferry boats can be very dangerous,” Zara teased. “It is,” the Brit grinned. “You aren’t going to turn down my lovely offer are you?”

             “if only real life er’s are that interesting…or medically unethical, not to mention unsound.” ender teased right back. her confidence alone was enough to draw another grin out of him. “you don’t even know my name. do you make a business of asking strangers out to drinks? or just the ones with the funny accent?”

Kent flinched slightly at the unexpected contact which was his gut reaction. Though with his therapy Kent was able to hold it together far better than he would have a few years ago. “Oh alright,” Kent quietly said. “Are you his guardian or do you two just spend a lot of time together?” 

               “we used to spend a lot of time together, until a became his guardian anyway,” he would have said it with more enthusiasm had it not been for the circumstances of said guardianship. “i don’t know, i guess some of us just aren’t cut out to be anyone’s parent.”

“A surgeon? That is quite impressive, babe.” Zara said to the man, surgeon. “From what I’ve seen on Grey’s is that even surgeons get the fancy white coats,” the Brit smirked.“You would know. You’ve been to medical school,” Zara smirked as she picked up her now Irish coffee and took a big sip of the now alcoholic beverage. “I’d be willing to share my little fun flask on a day your page won’t be calling you.”

             “from everything you’ve seen on grey’s you’ve probably got a lot of misconceptions when it comes to surgeons and hospitals.” ender was never much a fan of television, especially those that claimed to know his particular field, but he has heard stories, and those were proof that they knew nothing at all. he watched as she knocked back an impressive sum of the newly made irish coffee. a slight upward lean in the corner of his lips as a mask of curiosity assumed his features, “is this you asking me out for a drink?”

“Told you, no story to it.” Helena chuckled at his simple reaction. Of course she could dive into the whole story behind it, but she figured it was too much for a first conversation. “Didn’t I tell you I don’t make the coffee Irish for everyone?” She cocked an eyebrow, smiling. “But hey, since you’re a non-believer, to you we’ll say it’s just the coffee.” The blonde teased with a smirk. “Any food?” Her French side always thought things were better if there was food involved. Len could see his hesitation in his eyes and she instantly regretted asking. “I’m sorry about that.” Helena spoke sincerely. See, there it was, another reason why she didn’t go to medical school. “Damn, now you’ll make it hard for me to keep on flirting, I kind of want to hug you.” She joked, trying not to let him dwell in the darker mood. 

       “rightly you did,” he said, answering her smile with one of his own. but as he had mentioned before, he was a man of science not superstition, so he was satisfied with the irish coffee being the source of his comfort. he looked up to the woman as she teased him with a smirk. alright, maybe irish coffee and good company. “no thank you,” he said to the offer of food, “i think i'll just stick to the coffee for now.”

ender raised his brows in a mixture of surprise and amusement both. after slowly beginning to register what it was she said, he could not help but smile. maybe she was bad at it, or maybe he was just oblivious. but since meeting the eyes of the smiling woman he had a feeling that it was more to do with the latter. “is that what you’ve been doing is it? flirting?”

      —☤ ❝ Ah that old saying, ❞ Ethan playfully began his retort. ❝ Well, the offer STILL stands when your shift is over. ❞ Even though he was just a nurse and not a surgeon, the male also followed the ‘solely sober on the job’ rule. There were quite a few times when back at Afghanistan some doctors took a sip here and there while performing surgeries on the field, but those circumstances were different, and there was no WAR on these lands—- at least not as physically known. ❝ No need, ❞ the nurse waved away his thanks briefly before settling down on the opposite opened seat. ❝ Rough day at the office? ❞ The male asked albeit already assuming the answer by the other’s composure. Ethan could relate, after all the emergency room was where most deaths were seen, often times ambulances brining bodies too late to do some healing. That was always the hardest, knowing you COULD have done something, but not having the opportunity to do it.

             with anyone else, ender might have had some reservation before divulging his day to an acquaintance, but ethan was a nurse. a person who’s witnessed death and sickness as an occupational hazard. it was a rare and silent bond that existed between health professionals, especially those in the emergency ward. “i uh, had a kid on my table. he was nineteen.” the use of past tense was enough to explain the events that transpired after the operation. “just the way his dad looked at me mate...” a thick silence hung over them for a moment. death walked the halls of the hospital as frequently as their doctors do, there was no use in trying to ignore its presence, or to become too caught up in emotions. still every once in a while there was that one case. just one.  “my nephew is nineteen.” he said to no one in particular. he took a drink from his coffee and wished very much that it had a little more irish in it.

“It isn’t a bad idea at all, babe.” Zara said as she looked down at her own coffee. “Who ever starter that really just deserves a medal or some type of an award for their amazing idea,” she joked. 

“More for me then,” Zara smirked as she unscrewed the flask and pour some of its contents out into her drink. She was done with work for the day and just a little wouldn’t hurt at all. “So you’re a doctor then? Or at a hospital?” She asked. 

              “nah, none of that fancy white coats for me. a surgeon. so yes, at a hospital.” he said watching her down her flask as if it was water. this made him grin. ender had an appreciation for anyone who knew how to hold their liquor. he was half tempted to back out of his initial decline of her offer, but another look at the pager set him straight. “you know they say alcohol is bad for you,” he said in a meek attempt at humour. but it was a small silver of light on a bad day and he was grabbing on.
