so i just learnt about that reddit tifu story where the guy spent 2 years fucking his gf to the beat of a song and even after she told him she hated it and banned him from putting it on during sex, he would still thrust to the tune playing in his head (and she recognised it)

naturally, my mind immediately went to cumplane

imagine. they were secretly friends with benefits in their first life when they were both in college (pre-pidw days). xiang fei would put this song on every time they fucked until shen yuan flat out told him he hated it and xf's taste in music sucked and the song's rhythm isn't even good to papapa to. devastated, xiang fei, a child of the 21st century, complained about it on socmed (wholeheartedly believing that with china's vast population and him posting from an anonymous account, there was 0 chance anyone they both knew in real life would recognise it)

unfortunately for him, shen tang, a fan of "today i fucked up" stories and frequent visitor of the forum xiang fei had posted on, immediately recognised the song as that really obscure one her brother's college friend mentioned when he came for dinner a couple of weeks ago. the ages and other details from the post also matched everything about her brother and his friend

naturally, shen yuan is incredibly flustered their definitely-not-gay fwb relationship is now out, breaks up with xiang fei and blocks him everywhere. xiang fei is heartbroken, and it's only years later - when he starts writing a stallion novel - that he finally, kind of, moves on from shen yuan. thankfully, a particular hatereader of his novel is a pretty entertaining distraction from ruminating about his past fuckups

cue transmigration, peak lord meeting. yue qingyuan is giving a particularly dull speech (something about health and safety, probably). xf!shang qinghua doesn't even notice when he starts to tap that song's melody on the table's surface with his fingers as his mind drifts back to his very first crush from college....

i know it’s been said before, but it bears repeating: a big, big part of maintaining your confidence & self esteem as a creator is fully embracing the concept of “you don’t have to be good like them.  you can be good like you.”

for example, i’m not someone who’s particularly good at coming up with complex, elaborate plots or incredibly unique ideas.  it’s just not how i choose to write.  and it would be easy for me to look at someone with an elaborate, super unique plot & decide that because i don’t write like that, i’m not a good writer.  after all, unique plots are good, and my writing lacks those, so my writing must not be good, right?  well, no, actually.  i just have different strengths, like taking a simple premise & digging super deep into its emotional depths.  that’s what i do well & it isn’t any better or worse than people who do elaborate world building or come up with really creative and unexpected plots.

your writing is never going to be all things to all people.  it just isn’t.  inevitably, you’ll have to make creative choices that favor certain aspects of writing over others.  there is truly no getting around that & it’s honestly a good thing, because it means you’ve developed your own style.  but you’ll always encounter other creators who posses strengths that you don’t.  it doesn’t mean one is better than the other or that your writing isn’t good enough. 

comparing yourself like that would be like taking a piece of pizza & a cupcake & going “oh no, that cupcake is so sweet & my pizza isn’t sweet at all.” or “gosh, the garlic crust on that pizza is delicious and my cupcake doesn’t have ANY garlic.”  obviously your pizza isn’t sweet.  obviously your cupcake doesn’t have garlic.  a food can’t have every single delicious flavor at once.  the cupcake is good like a cupcake.  the pizza is good like a pizza.  so you don’t have to be good like them.  you can be good like you.

This also means that sometimes you will get writing advice on how to improve your cupcakes and sometimes you will get writing advice on how to add garlic to your cupcakes because the reader doesn’t get that you’re not making a pizza

mermaid cumplane au

xiang fei lives near a large ocean coast. sometimes when he's struggling to write he may go out in his tiny little row boat and read what he has aloud to no one in particular. he also talks to himself about his issues.

shen yuan is a mermaid who listens to this mess of a man's messy writting and even messier life. its become a bit of a routine. Xiang fei tends to show up about every other week sometimes every week if he's really struggling and shen yuan's curious (read:nosy) about him so he shows up.

he really wants to criticize xiang fei's writing especially when he scraps a perfect chapter for some slop because 'it won't sell well'. sy isn't sure what that means other than a story filled with bland repetative sex. after a particular bad rewrite, sy can't stand it and peaks out from the water to tell him he can't possibly make those inane changes. he does not account for the fact that, while he knows xiang fei very well, xiang fei doesn't know he exists and the existence of humanlike non human creatures can be disturbing.

needless to say, xiang fei has a small panic attack and faints

I know I've said this before, but cumplane is the funniest fucking ship name I've ever come across. It's so accurate. Those bitches DO be complaining.

Meanwhile, scumcum is the nastiest ship name I've ever come across. I can barely say it outloud. The mental images that accompany it make me want to wretch. I can't even put into words the amount of psychic damage it does to me every single time.
