I think the most hilarious place to put Post-Canon Sokka would have been the university at Ba Sing Se. I think he would have made a great unhinged professor. Also, in true Sokka fashion, he should have completely dodged fame. Momo is more famous than he is.
He wants to demonstrate to the class how this thing called electricity works, so he's going to be bringing in a Firebender, so everybody be cool, we're all friends here... and in walks Princess Azula of the Fire Nation. One-time conqueror of the city. One of the students is currently writing an essay on how her brief rule of the city affected fruit trade. She says she considers the class to still be her subjects as she doesn't acknowledge any pretenders to any of her thrones, but for now you're exempted from bowing and "Your Highness" will do. It's a really interesting lecture.
"Okay, guys - hey, listen up, everyone - I won't be here next week, me and Aang are going to-" yeah right, sure, Professor Sokka knows the Avatar. Except, of course, the Avatar walks in sheepishly and says that Appa might have gotten into Sokka's hybrid crops, and then you all have to sit there and watch your professor chase the Avatar around with a sword.
One postgrad student is specializing in Water Tribe Cultures. She's currently studying the massive cultural shift that happened in the Northern Water Tribe at the end of the war - oh, and Professor, I absolutely know that you're from the Southern Water Tribe, but it's just that the shift started with Master Katara, and of course I don't think that every person from the South knows one another haha it's just that I need to ask her some questions and I thought maybe you could help me write a letter or write a letter of introduction or...
Sokka looks at her blankly and goes "yeah, she's my sister. KATARA!" which is followed by a faint answering "fuck you!" from Somewhere and to the horror/elation of our postgrad, Master Katara bursts in and is promptly beaned in the head with a rock by Professor Sokka. Her brother. her hero and her professor are siblings and currently brawling on the floor.
please tell me the atla universe has rumours of a lost underwater city full of superpowered waterbenders or something
See that picture above? That’s a close up of my great grandmother’s immigration papers when she first came to the US back in the early 20th century. But my great grandma’s information isn’t the important part here. The important part is that line in the middle there about how they arrived in the country.
And how ‘stowaway’ is a legitimate, valid option to select.
So yeah. They absolutely just showed up, and that part of immigration history needs to be talked about a lot more.
REMINDER THAT TRAVEL VISAS AS WE KNOW THEM TODAY WERE INVENTED IN THE 1930S TO KEEP JEWISH REFUGEES OUT OF COUNTRIES THAT DID NOT WANT AN ‘INFLUX’ OF THEM, THEREBY FACILITATING THEIR GENOCIDE :)))))
read What is A Refugee for more history. Educate yourselves.
Yup. Mom’s side of the family came in this way. Just...wrote their names down and that was that.
The link doesn't work anymore, but for anyone curious: What is A Refugee is a book by William Maley, and you can find it on other sites (just don't buy from Amazon, please) or ask in your library.
What magic is this....
what a legend
fun fact: these are actual vocal warm ups he would do, and used this as a way to interact with the audience while being able to stretch while performing .
also he was a witch and he used it as a spell like look at that power
This performance at Live Aid literally was unlike anything anyone had seen. No one, and I mean, NO ONE has ever owned a crowd like this.
Other performers have literally said since, “Freddy basically changed live performance forever and left us NOTHING.” (affectionate)
I am convinced he was blessed by the gods. He was a fucking herald for said gods or something. Hell, there’s that vid of the Green Day fans waiting for the concert to begin and fucking singing in perfect fucking harmony to Bohemian Rhapsody! Freddy isn’t even alive and he still fucking commands a crowd!
Full performance:
Igen ❤️
If this passes through making the rounds and I don’t reblog it, I’m dead.
adding THAT video
adding the green day crowd singing bohemian rhapsody video for reasons.

Lake Michigan
Ocean*
I mean, Lake Michigan is big enough to be a sea. All the Great Lakes are, they’re not considered seas because they’re not all at sea level, they’re all freshwater, and they’re not directly connected to the ocean (they’re only connected through rivers and lochs)
Small lakes don’t have noticeable waves but because the Great Lakes are so big there’s enough room for the air to downdraft across it (which is also why in Michigan you get lake effect weather and so it can be a blizzard one day and 70° the next)
My grandmother, who grew up in Puerto Rico, when seeing Lake Michigan for the first time with my grandfather exclaimed, “This is not a lake, it is a sea!”
Lake Superior has tides. They’re not as dramatic as the actual ocean’s of course. But still. For every storm that kicks up 200ft spray and waves that crash over the tops of the lighthouses on the piers, there’s days when you can’t tell where the water meets the sky.
Lake Superior doesn’t have a monster, Lake Superior IS the monster.
One aspect of Lake Superior that supports that its the monster is that it doesn’t give up the bodies of people who die in it. Due to the cold, the bacteria that produce gases that typically make corpses float in water don’t work very fast, and so they don’t bloat the body up enough for it to leave the bottom.
It’s a dangerous lake, prone to vicious storms and when it gets you, it holds onto your body forever, refusing to relinquish it back to the surface.
The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot describes Lake Superior beautifully with the lyric
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called ‘gitche gumee’
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy
Actually, that whole song is very haunting and beautiful. Every November 10th my school would hold a silence for the people that died.
This is the music video including footage of the ship before she sank. Idk if it’s just because I’m a Michigander and grew up hearing about this wreck every year, but this song sends shivers down my spine and makes me tear up. It’s just… haunting.
When I was on my way to Connecticut a few years ago, I had a layover in Chicago and it was my first time seeing any of the Great Lakes in person. Around here, most lakes are green or brown. I was shocked to see that Lake Michigan was in fact, the same color as the ocean - bright turquoise. I thought there had to be dye in the water or something. It couldn’t be real! But it was, and the water is crystal clear.
Oh looks it’s my favorite topic, the great lakes
You know living on an island in the Great Lakes is an amazing experience. Some days, it's so quiet and eerie in the Winter nights. Some days, the wind has the waves crashing around and it's so loud no matter where you are.
Fun fact: Growing up, one of my aunts didn't believe we had beaches, because she's from California. When we took her to Lake Michigan she ate her words.
I would dearly love for more people to be capable of differentiating between public risk and personal risk.
Examples: drinking is a personal risk. Drinking and driving is a public risk. Going scuba diving is a personal risk. Running a scuba shop with faulty equipment is a public risk. Riding a bicycle without a helmet is a personal risk. Not maintaining public transport safety standards is a public risk. Foraging for mushrooms is a personal risk. Advertising a mushroom identification app that uses shoddy AI is a public risk. Elective surgery is a personal risk. Not wearing a mask in a doctor's waiting room when you are sick with a contagious illness is a public risk.
I could go on just about forever here. But it's a really important distinction and it drives me nuts when they get conflated, and it's so common.

Please send me the training or tutorial in a written format with maybe some screenshots if necessary. I don't want a video tutorial. I don't want to waste time trying to scroll to the exact moment in the instructions that I need and then have to pause and replay it because I missed the .01 seconds of actually relevant information.
Please. Text. Maybe some images for clarification. I can read. I promise.
Skimmable, SEARCHABLE instructions. If they're long, there should be a hyperlinked table of contents.

I work in science communications and I am constantly hearing about how we need to try to do video to appeal to the newest generation of scientists and it's like do you think physicists who can't read are a good idea?
Why the f*** do they still make pads without wings? I grabbed some by mistake, because I was in a rush. Urgh
I love that my kids know and understand that there are thousands of religions in the world and if they choose to be religious it's their choice.
I know my family won't understand that mindset. But growing up going to church and not having activities or friends outside of church, stunted my growth as a person.
This came about because one of the kids at my daughter's school went on a rant saying everyone was going to Hell for not believing.
If you are silent about your pain they'll kill you and say you enjoyed it - Zora Neale Hurston
This is one of those posts where I feel like I'm doing others and myself a disservice by not sharing. I wish someone had shown me this a long time ago.
Maybe I'd be having to do less work to break out of this shell, now.
...All of the above.
Tell your truth, and don't be afraid to have it be heard... because this is not a dress rehearsal.
It's difficult when you've spent years being a "good person", a "exceptional one" and the first time you complain, people left you. Even some of the ones who say they loved you. But once the fake people leave you, the trustful ones will be able to enter.

Passports
4/5 of our family members have passports. The last one had issues that hopefully will be resolved soon because I'm looking at immigration requirements right now.
