the sound of melissa's voice, soft and quiet, brought a smile to jean's face — blue eyes flickered over to the other girl, joy flashing there. it was always nice to hear melissa speak.

around jean, she is safe to do so — there was no chance of her powers affecting her, not with the mental shields that jean has up — but it was understandable for melissa to be wary.

after all, jean knew what it felt like to be overwhelmed by powers beyond your control.

“ okay, ” jean replied, hand reaching for melissa's, “ what did you have in mind, pretty girl? ”

the crimson that tinted melissa's cheeks in response to the compliment made warmth blossom in jean's chest. how often had melissa heard compliments like this before? ones with no strings attached, with no sense of expectation around them? ones that were entirely genuine in their sincerity? jean can't help but wonder.

“ how about a mall trip? ” from where their hands are clasped, jean shifted, fingers interlocking with melissa's. “ or we could go for a drive, no destination in mind. anywhere you want, mel — i'm all yours. ”

hands ball into fists at her sides, yet she does not argue. erik is right — arguing about this is not going make anything easier. all this does is make matters harder on herself. all it does is make things harder on all of them, and god knows how much they have all already been through as it is.

jean trusted charles — and charles trusted erik.

that has to count for something, right?

“ no, i don't, ” jean concedes, blue eyes narrowing, “ but i don't have to like it either. ”

the x-men and the students all look to her and scott for leadership — and the way that they respond to erik's sudden presence influences all of them. god, jean is so damn tired of things being hard all of the time. “ i'll give you the benefit of the doubt, erik — but please don't make me regret this. ”

jean fidgets with the edge of the sheet, though blue eyes do not leave scott's face. maybe she should be mad at him — but how could she be, when he hadn't known? how could he have known that she had been replaced, when right now, she can't even wrap her head around it? in every way that counted, madelyne was her : they are one and the same, as much as it pains her to admit it.

scott stands in the bedroom doorway and he looks so ... lost.

there is no world in which jean would be able to turn him away. not like this. after all, scott is hurting, too — his entire world has been thrown off its axis and he has lost so, so much.

jean's expression softens, and she pats the empty side of the bed, an open invitation.

come here, scott.

the words are uttered gently, a soft caress inside his mind like a loving touch, only for him to hear.

“ i know that look. ”

with a sigh ( and a fond smile ), jean closes the gap between them. a quick kiss is pressed against his lips in greeting and then, like a queen atop her throne, she takes a seat on scott's lap. with her arm now draped around his shoulders, her fingers gently dance along the back of his neck.

“ you want to tell me what's going on in that pretty head of yours, or do i have to find out for myself? ”

( she's joking, of course. )

If anything, Scott almost prefers it. Hank claims it's an issue that'd lead to some eventual codependency, but how could Scott not want it? He's never felt safer than when Jean was part of him, living in him; for all that he's fucked in the head, she's never thought him ugly, and there's a security in that. Something empowering.

"I'm just tired," Scott says, "I think." He leans forward, resting his temple on Jean's shoulder, and sighs.

"I hate talking to the press. All the things they might take out of context... we have to make this place look good, Jean. A place parents would trust their kids in."

Scott's arms tighten around Jean's waist.

"I've been worrying about it since they left."

Jean understands where he's coming from. Reporters and viewers alike are always looking over everything that they say with a fine-toothed comb, all trying to find something to hold against them. Some excuse to turn against them. It's happened before and it will happen again. But the thing is, when it comes to talking about the school, there's no one better than Scott, regardless of what he may think.

Charles chose him as the leader for a reason, after all.

“ You did good, baby. I promise. ”

Jean leans down, kissing the top of his head.

“ If they're determined to find something wrong with the school, then they will — and nothing we do can change that. But you did your part, darling, and that's all that matters. Somewhere out there though, some parent will see and it'll be exactly what they need to hear. ”
