anw. here's my {edited} syllabus on topics relating to the boundary between a game and whatever non-game realities it's embedded in, with as much consideration of the players' bodies/physicality as i cld muster:

jaakko stenros, in defence of a magic circle: the social, mental, and cultural boundaries of play. <- overview of various theoretical perspectives on or pertaining to the magic circle.

the dark side of gameplay: controversial issues in playful environments. <- what it says on the tin. a collection of essays by various authors.

huff, johnson, & miller, virtual harms and virtual responsibility: a rape in cyberspace. <- legal-ethical consideration of harm in virtual (i.e. digital) environments in response to julian dibbell's a rape in cyberspace.

john danaher, the law and ethics of virtual sexual assault. <- consideration of how sexual assault that takes place in primarily vr games, including by any other name, should be legally classified.

chloe germaine buckley, encountering weird objects: lovecraft, larp, and speculative philosophy. <- article mostly abt how larping sustains its game-worlds via objects.

dennis waskul and mark lust, role-playing and playing roles: the person, player, and persona in fantasy role-playing. <- interested in the relationship between the various dimensions across which, they argue, role-play participants operate in.

jeroen jansz, playing out identities and emotions. <- abt what players get out of playing digital game-characters, affectively.

katherine angel cross, the new laboratory of dreams: role-playing games as resistance. <- abt what players get out of playing digital game-characters, in terms of identity/real-life roles. written by a trans woman.

prszybylski et al, the ideal self at play: the appeal of video games that let you be all that you can be. <- psychological study, which argues that games help players bridge between their 'ideal self' and their 'actual self'.

bonnie nardi, my life as a night-elf priest. <- first-hand approach to WoW gaming; i especially liked the chapter "play as aesthetic experience," which more theoretically tries to answer what the goal of gaming is.

stephanie boluck and patrick lemieux, breaking the metagame: feminist spoilsports and magic circle jerks. <- i only read this chapter. it's abt misogyny in gaming culture. critical of any delimited game-space because their rules are often set by men who respond with virulent misogyny to any perceived threat.

gordon calleja, ludic identities and the magic circle. <- i took the term "game-space" from him. though he talks in terms of identities, he's interested in the world of the game, which he thinks cannot be separated from the world "(supposedly) external."

frans mäyrä, from the demonic tradition to art-evil in digital games: monstrous pleasures in lord of the rings online. <- abt the merits and delights of being 'evil' in digital games. deals with ethics as a matter of dialectics.

bob rehak, playing at being: psychoanalysis and the avatar. <- abt how avatars mediate player-identity. this, too, is dialectics.

I assume some of the travel was not worlds but most of it has to be considering how many people he flew in, and events and marketing was also mostly (all?) for worlds.

Research: Understanding MCYT Boundaries

During my time in mcyt fandom, I've watched as the fandom's perception of creator boundaries has grown and shifted into a cornerstone of our fandom, and yet we don't actually have any good data on how the fandom as a whole perceives them outside of discourse posts.

The goal of this unofficial study NOT to make a value judgement on whether creator boundaries should be respected - it is to understand how the fandom currently perceives and interacts with them.* Is respecting creator boundaries important to you? Has your favorite creator made a boundary list or spoken about it on stream? Do you find some boundaries acceptable and others not? Have you ever been the target of hate for engaging with boundary-breaking content? Whether you think boundaries should always be respected or you think they're being used as tools of censorship, I want to hear from you. What are boundaries, and why do they matter so much to us?

This survey is a mix of multiple choice and optional long-response questions. It should take about 15 minutes if you’re only doing the required questions, and much longer if you choose to answer the optional questions.**

I will aim to publish the results within a month of the survey’s close, and keep you updated on the timeline if that’s not feasible for any reason.

* Why I think this data is important to collect: The idea for this survey came to me almost a year ago, and I started developing it around February of this year. I’ve spoken with dozens of people about this topic with diverse opinions, read and catalogued hundreds of tumblr posts, rewatched streams and videos by creators and fans, and watched as opinions have shifted across fandoms in real time. I feel extremely confident in saying that every person on every side cares deeply about respecting others and creating safe, welcoming communities in all mcyt spaces. Where they differ is on how to show that respect, which kinds of expectations they think are reasonable in different spaces, and beliefs on how those in power should be using their influence. I don’t expect this survey’s results to fundamentally change anything - this debate has been going on longer than mcyt has existed. But I think it’s still important to analyze the actual arguments people are making and how they affect our communities, instead of focusing on expected behavior from others based on our own values, so we can see the varying expressions of humanity in each other and work towards a better future for our fandom. I don’t think we’re as different as the discourse may have us believe.

** This survey is designed to encourage all participants to think critically about their position and the effects it has. I am aware that I have my own personal biases, so I have taken steps to ensure that the survey is as bipartisan as possible and also gives participants the opportunity to explain their answers for every question if they feel the need. This is WithMayX addressing the fact that she played and streamed (!) Hogwarts Legacy. Needless to say, this is an absolute non-apology, and the behaviour demonstrated here is rather concerning. Not only does she frame the very real and serious concerns about potential transphobia as people trying to "cancel" her (via less-than-10-likes tweets, yeah), she, despite ostensibly knowing her, consistently misgenders the trans woman who dared criticizing her. Needless to say, I don't think that a person like that should be allowed into a trans-inclusive server like Lifesteal, especially considering that some of the members there are trans themselves.

Update: after the trans woman mentioned (streamer vintagevanilla) publicly @'ed her on twitter and she explained that a public apology was needed for being ignorant, may proceeded to think she was being "canceled for unfollowing her" and de/mis-gendered vintagevanilla during her entire attempt at addressing the situation. To give her credit, she did say trans rights, but didn't understand how platforming hogwarts legacy was wrong in any way and laughed throughout her "apology". Also cited a reposted tiktok in 2024 as proof of her allyship and how she "hasn't been silent" on trans rights. Needless to say, this is not a real understanding of what she's done wrong and I would still like to ask for public backlash against this. ANY platforming or supporting of JK Rowling DIRECTLY funds and supports her private women's fund, which is dedicated entirely to the systemic erasure of trans women through the courts system.

like lifesteal obviously wants NOTHING to do with dream in any way. I can't remember a single lifesteal member ever collabing with dream. I don't remember anyone even interacting with him other than the dream/wemmbu twitter thing. there's no way they would invite a guy who so openly interacts with them lmao.

and it was annoying to see so many people want jude in lifesteal after he wasn't in lifesteal world. that was very obviously their way of vetting potential members and they chose the ones they thought fit best and committed time. anyone expecting someone who wasn't in that is stupid/unobservant at the very least.

this might be reaching but the fact they announced fruit as "Lifesteal's Newest Trapper" kinda feels like a jude vague lol. like they don't need that weirdo they have their own guy.

final thoughts jude needs to die and sharp needs to move on. and infume should get kicked from lifesteal and have ghostie take his place.
