Ebelebo, Opobo.

Went to the village last month to see a masquerade display that would involve all the War Canoe Houses showing off their masquerades. The display was scheduled to start at 3.30 pm. I don’t think the masquerades like being told when to start though. We didn’t plan on spending the night so at 5.30pm we made our way to the jetty. People spending the night at the village were laughing at those leaving and calling them strangers for not spending the night. Chai.

You don’t realise how accurate the term “stranger” is until you see a masquerade display and hear people identify the different masquerades, tell you which houses they belong to and if the masquerade chases women, or men, or both. Basically reeling out info on masquerades as if the focus of the discussion are characters in the MCU and not masquerades. This is usually what happens when you’re raised in the city. You can’t eat your cake and still have it.

Until recently the only masquerade I could easily identify is the Ekpo masquerade which is indigenous to Efik/Ibibio/Annang people. I have just added one more to that very short list. Ebelebo can be male or female (pictured). The male Ebelebo has two faces, one in front and one behind. Sadly, that is all I know for now. You will have to ask someone from Opobo to help with more.

Better Days or Better Dayz? Anyway, that has nothing to do with the photos above. In fishing ports (communities) along the coast, fishing boats are usually moved away from the shoreline at the end of the days catch. While in fishing communities in the delta, the boats are usually just tied to stakes and left on the water.
