How Japan Plans to Build an Orbital Solar Farm

In a recent article on IEEE Spectrum, the Japanse space agency (JAXA) revives the Space Solar Power Systems (SSPS) project with new energy. It is clear that Energy from Space requires a long-term vision together with high-tech developments. The Energy from Space Foundation explained on Business News Radio once again the concept and its challenges.

Prof. Sasaki of JAXA: "It would be difficult and expensive, but the payoff would be immense, and not just in economic terms."

EFSF @ Amstel Club

Energy from Space Foundation was at the Amstel Club at Amstel Hotel in Amsterdam, attending an inspirational talk by Anne-Marie Rakhorst (sustainability guru, business woman year 2000, and introducer of the book Cradle-to-Cradle in NL, https://twitter.com/ARakhorst) on Sustainability. EFSF will give its talk about Energy from Space @ Amstel Club soon.

JAXA plans to launch Energy from Space demonstration satellite

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) plans to launch an experimental satellite in 2017 equipped with photovoltaic panels that will transmit electricity generated in space back to the earth.

The satellite will be the first of its kind to demonstrate the Energy from Space concept, and will be primarily used for scientific purposes.

The Energy from Space Foundation is in regular contact with JAXA to explore the possibilities for cooperation. For the foreseeable future this will mean advocating Energy from Space including this satellite mission internationally. In addition, the Energy from Space Foundation conducts scientific research and will publish papers accordingly.

Energy from Space Foundation on public radio

The Energy from Space Foundation has been on Business News Radio (BNR) several times. The first time was about Energy from Space itself, when chairman Ramses Molijn was interviewed by the Dutch celebrity Humberto Tan (http://www.bnr.nl/topic/grotebnrenergiedag/2011/05/16/buitenaardse-energie-binnen-handbereik). The second time and third time were about other international topics on space faring, with the latest on the BeiDou satellite navigation system; the Chinese alternative for GPS (http://www.bnr.nl/programma/bnrdigitaal/943337-1212/china-stelt-satellietsysteem-open). All interviews are in Dutch.

Dutch Space meeting

Recently the Energy from Space Foundation had a meeting at Dutch Space to explain the objectives of the Foundation and its ambitions. We also discussed our interest in potential future collaboration. Dutch Space is part of the EADS corporation, which showed interest in Energy from Space in the past (see http://www.astrium.eads.net/en/programme/space-based-solar-power-innovating-for-clean-energy.html).

Dutch Space is particularly competent in solar panels, foldable structures, and attitude determination and control. All these technologies are essential for future Energy from Space missions.

Kyoto University contact

In June 2011, Ramses Molijn visited Kyoto University, Uji Campus, Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere, to discuss their important research on Wireless Power Transmission. Their research group and large laboratory for experiments will make the difference for maturing the essential technology for Energy from Space. Recently, the Energy from Space Foundation re-established contact to find out that real progress is made. See also here and here.

NLR meeting

Recently we had a meeting at NLR to explain the objectives of the Energy from Space Foundation and its ambitions. We also discussed our interest in potential collaboration. At EFSF we are doing calculations regarding Wireless Power Transmission and implications for a possible small satellite (proof-of-concept).

Business Proposal Space Energy

The Energy from Space Foundation (EFSF) contributed to a Business Proposal of Space Energy with technical analysis. Specifically, EFSF provided a high-level overview of the technological developments that can be expected when realizing Energy from Space systems. In addition, EFSF identified potential fields for Intellectual Property (IP) and its terrestrial applications.

TEDx Amsterdam iDiscover Workshop

The Energy from Space Foundation joined the iDiscover workshop organized by TEDx Amsterdam and Deloitte. The workshop included brainstorming, inspiring, networking, learning social media skills, and getting legal and financial advice.
