Tabo to Kinnaur.
The town of Tabo had no electricity for the past 2 months when we landed there. People weren't too fazed, un-worried they went about their daily business. The barber, who was from outside, wasn't too happy about this cheerful attitude though. According to him, if this happened in his village, they would have burned shit down.
The Guillemot is a seabird that lays its eggs on a bare rock ledge on a cliff face. When an egg is accidentally dislodged, its shape causes it to spin in a tight circle, which prevents it from falling off the ledge into the sea. (Springwatch - BBC)
And a fascinating article about the eggs self cleaning properties can be found here.
Overhearing
In office I sit next to an alcove where people come with the mistaken belief that it's an appropriate spot for private phone conversations (yes, we've put signs up but nothing dissuades them). Anyway, there is a clear breakdown of conversation topics by sexes. Men talk about work, money and any random trivial meaningless crap. While women talk almost exclusively about relationships & emotions in great detail. I can't help but wonder about the degree of intersection between these 2 sets. Do these men belong to the same set of men to whom these women are paying so much attention and thought? If not, who are these other men, and do they similarly dissect their lives over the phone?
Somewhere in Ladakh
Me and Dundee did a small trek in Ladakh in Aug 2011. We started off from Alchi and were aiming for Lamayuru. A few storms and some altitude issues meant we could not finish the entire trek.
But over the 4 days we encountered some brilliant scenery at some very puffy altitudes (between 9K and 14K feet).
Top pic: Me contemplating the winding Indus
Bottom left: The village of Hibti, altitude somewhere around 11K feet. All that red rock you can see to the right of the village are residues of the time when the Indian subcontinent collided with the Eurasian plate.
Bottom right: Our camping spot in the village of Tar (thats the name). The village is situated in a bowl like structure with sheer walls thousands of feet above all around, with only 2 canyons on either side allowing approach. 1 canyon leads to the road, and another canyon leads to the glacier from which the stream that cut this canyon begins. Our target was the latter canyon, from which we had to scale another high pass, but severe snow storms at the top made us change our minds.
THE FUCK IS THIS
ermm... seriously
Bhutan: A long time ago
It's been 5 years or more since these snaps were taken. Thinner and younger is the defining motif for me. We went there in december, place was cold as fucks.
Pics (by Dundee) - clockwise from top:
1> Me (with the same tshirt I wore to sleep last night), Roheen, Pearly and Dundee in the glow of the room heater.
2> The streets of Paro, late at night.
3> Me "meditating" in front of Taktsang monastery - back then I was supremely unfit and the climb really knackered me out.

Hopefully one day soon this will be a well traveled land again.
The only sensible comment posted on the Times of India website in 2012.
Me want. To. Be there.

Love this song so much :)
She made me come moreĀ in a toilet stall in six minutesĀ than you have in the past three years, Greg.
And the memories remain
Riding by the River Tuul Pearly, Cedric and Me took off from Ulaan Baatar following the River Tuul on it's journey southwards, as it snakes around the mountains in the Khustain Nuruu National park (the one with the Przewalski horses). Didn't catch any sight of those elusive and endangered horses but saw many of their cousins hanging around the countryside.
We were on a Ural bike with a side car attached, and thankfully Cedric did most of the riding, as you can see from the last picture one of the many minor incidents of off-roading while I tried to ride that beast with a 650cc engine and a rotary crankshaft for transmission.
Getting out of Zamynn Uud While planning my summer vacations, the chief sticking point in my travel plans was about how should I get to Ulan Baatar from Beijing. I checked a few travel sites before ruling out the flying idea, it was prohibitively expensive for me. The next option that presented itself was the train from Beijing to Ulan Baatar, but lack of time meant that I could not reliably look to placing myself in it. The only other option left was to get to Erlian, the last city on the Chinese border; this I did by flying in, a cheap flight for 300 quai. Then hopped over to Zamynn Uud on the Mongolian side. You have to take a jeep across, and a shared ride pinched my wallet for 100 quais. Zamynn Uud: its chief virtue being a railway station. Getting on the train was easier said than done, as me and my fellow travelers found out. We were there for 2 days before we managed to plead our way onto a train.
The first CD we owned
The first CD player my family owned while growing was an Aiwa deck. I remember being so astounded. And it came with a CD from Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Back then tracks like 'Relax' etc had a smallish following.
But this is the song that remained with me.
