it was the same new years event yn had seen for the last 12 years. both their parents attended each year. always the same people, same place, same heeseung by her side.
yn sat with him, both showing each other weird cat memes. their chairs angled the balcony, towards the pretty view of seoul. jake and jay were also there, arguing over a party hat. a light up one.
“i bought it” jay argued, snatching it from jake
“yeah but i found it on the table” jake tried reaching for the hat but spilled his drink “see what you did!”
yn only half listened. heeseung was now trying to separate the two before someone broke the hat. the hat heeseung bought.
her attention had drifted towards the couples scattered around the room. a woman fixing her boyfriends hair before taking a picture, a boy saying something to his girlfriend making her smile into his shoulder.
yn had always wished for little things like this. every year, she hoped she would have a partner for the new year.
“earth to yn” heeseung said waving a hand
she blinked and looked at him. his collar was already loosened and his light hair fell softly over his eyes. he looked unfairly nice tonight, as usual. yn liked heeseung for so long it became embarrassing. so much that being around him felt so unfair, because life enjoyed torturing yn so much, he looked so good everyday.
heeseung laughed, sitting down next to her again.
“you know, a whole year and i couldn’t find someone to spend new years with” she said, getting jake and jay’s attention “am i badluck?”
jake set down his new drink, with an exaggerated sigh
“you would actually have better luck if you would stop ignoring the obvious”
the table went quiet, yn frowned and heeseung’s expression turned completely blank
“i want cake” jay stood up suddenly
“oh yeah! me too” jake laughed, following jay
for a moment, heeseung nor yn spoke. the room grew louder as midnight got closer. yn looked at the clock then at heeseung who was still expressionless, then at her hands
“two minutes” she said “and no new years kiss” she mumbled quietly, thinking heeseung couldn’t hear
“you’re still on that?” he said, catching the last part
“hey. i committed to it, okay.”
“maybe i should just kiss jake” yn teased
heeseung’s expression flattened, annoyingly
“right. see how that works out” he scoffed
“okay.. sunghoon then” yn teased, once again
his fingers tapped the table, then stopped
yn turned so fast she nearly fell off her chair “um, what?”
he risked stealing a glance at her “so you don’t, uh feel lonely”
the answer came out too fast yn cringed. he looked at her again, whatever nervousness he had been feeling suddenly went away.
“i meant.. no don’t forget it”
there was less than a minute now, people had started gathering around. jake and jay watched from afar. hoping to see something go down
yn suddenly became aware of everything. how close he was, and damn how good he looked.
she turned to look at him and he was already looking at her, smiling. she let out of small laugh and shoved his shoulder
“say something like that and then act normal” she said, looking up at him
his laugh was low and without thinking, he grabbed her hand from inside her pocket. he stilled for a second, realizing what he did, he laced their fingers together
he leaned closer, close enough so she can smell his cologne, familiar and definitely him. close enough that both of them were smiling like little kids.
she tightened her grip. and when the place broke out in cheers, she didn’t hear any of it. heeseung closed the last bit of distance and kissed her.
it was gentle, soft at first. like if he was checking to see if she’d pull away first but she didn’t. it felt like a secret finally slipping out to both of them. like a firework, quiet at first.
when she finally pulled away, it was just a little. enough to look at him. she blinked, trying to register what had just happened
she let out a small laugh. “you- uh, actually did it”
heeseung was trying his very best to stay calm but his red ears completely gave him away. “yeah” he said quietly
it was silent for a minute. just tension and unspoken feelings, until heeseung broke the silence
“yn, i like you” he blurted out “for a while- it didn’t happen because of this”
“you didn’t think what?” she interrupted
“that you.. felt the same”
“you’re kind of an idiot hee” she giggled “i like you too”
“YOU DO- ah, that’s- that’s, great”
“very great” she said, placing a kiss on his cheek. yn smiled, trying to hide her red cheeks by turning towards the fireworks
heeseung grabbed her hand and leaned down to her face “you’re so cute” followed by another kiss.
