This was a completely intentional, foreshadowing shot. Betty spent this episode *really* coming to terms with the fact that she and Archie were never going to be more than friends. Then later, when Betty turns, Jughead comes completely into focus, while Archie does not. It’s like she was finally seeing him for the first time. This was 100% meant to be the first Bughead moment and they didn’t even know it yet (Well, maybe Jughead knew it. But Betty sure didn’t.) And it gives me butterflies Every. Single. Time.

Remember in 1x02 when Jughead deemed Archie “the luckiest redheaded boy in the universe” and we were all confused as to why that was included in the narration until we realized Archie had his arm swung over the booth around the girl whose heart–at the time–belonged to him that Jughead longed for lowkey.
