"Are you worried about me, Inspector Han?"
"That's ridiculous."
"Are you worried about me, Inspector Lee?"
"That's ridiculous."
Lee Dongsik: If⦠your father is connected to my sisterās death, will you be alright?
Han Juwon: Are you asking if Iāll be alright? Not you? Why are you asking such a question? Why does it matter if Iām alright or not?
Lee Dongsik: Youāre right. Why am I asking you such a thing?
making my return with another "i watched something and i don't know how to recommend it to others so i made a powerpoint" post!
come scream with me, it's fun in here, i promise. don't you want to watch a legitimately good crime show with real heart to it. don't you want to get hopelessly invested in a homoerotic duo. the door is wide open!
oh, and additionally: a link to my favorite (spoiler-free) review of the series. and a link to another good one.
Beyond Evil 2025 Rewatch Announcement!
I've finally gave in to the temptation to start a Beyond Evil sideblog and rewatch the series with Viki subtitles and since there has been some growing interest in the fandom to do more as a community, I thought other people might want to join/tag along for it - especially since I was planning to also use this sideblog to categorize all the Beyond Evil reblogs on my main that are a huge fucking mess.
(Also the re-watch is probably going to make me reblog even more Beyond Evil stuff as usual and I wanna spare my followers from an onslaught of Beyond Evil content).
As we all know from the official timeline (once again infinite gratitude to @rumpleteasa for all her translation work!), Lee Yoo Yeon died on the night of October 15th at 03:04 AM and Lee Dong Sik was arrested on October 16th at 14:00 PM - twenty years later, Han Joo Woon would come to Manyang on October 11th, so it felt very appropriate to start around this time to follow the events of the series in the appropriate season.
I will officially start the rewatch next week and watch two episodes a week as in the original airing order (schedule and whatnot on the pinned post) and if anyone wants to tag along they are more than welcome! I will be browsing and posting my musings in the #be-rewatch tag, so join there! You can also send ask and submission and whatever else you might be thinking of (more in the FAQs).
Honestly this is 40% about the rewatch and 60% about (re)sharing all the amazing works in the fandom. I will also be doing Fanvid Fridays because I have a consumed an absurd amount of AMVs and found some extremely good ones and the world needs to know, dammit.
If anyone has requests/suggests/questions/complaints feel free to use the ask button or flood the replies.

"If I could waste another life, l'd give my all and do you right. No matter who I change into, I'll always wind up missing you."
I'm Not Them
Dongsik finds him at the balcony of their hotel room.
He closes the main entrance door, drops the key card on the desk, and slides open the door to the balcony. He does none of these things quietly, deliberately alerting the other person of his presence.
Han Joowon does not react. Dongsikās presence isnāt unwelcome then.
He sidles up to him and holds on to the railing, following Joowonās lead as he surveys the view before them.
The sky above is overcast with fading light, with the sun ready to set beneath the ocean in an hour or so. The temperature is chilly but not cold, and the beachfront breeze is ruffling his hair. Thereās a distant peal of laughter in the background, with little kids running around and playing in the sand with their parents.
āSecond thoughts?ā he asks softly.
A hand immediately slides over to cover his, fingers untangling his hold on the balcony to thread theirs tightly together.
āNever about you.ā
Dongsik turns to Joowon then at his earnest declaration and offers him a gentle smile, understanding the deflection for what it is.
He understands Joowon far, far too wellāeven when Joowon doesnāt understand his own self.
āBut you are having second thoughts.ā
I get off a fifteen hour flight running on no sleep in the last thirty hours to find this absolutely BEAUTIFUL story waiting for me in my inbox. Again dedicated to little old me. I feel undeserving, but will greedily accept as I can never get enough of these two and especially this little universe @vindicated-truth as created with her amazing series ā¤ļø
I was not going to cry. Maybe laugh a little, maybe sniffle once or twice, but no, now I am full on sobbing. How do you do this to me every time? My heartaches when I understand how Joowon feels, and no logic can undo such trauma. I want to wrap him up and protect him from the world as I know Dongsik does.
Seeing little snippets of how much Joowon is loved by each and every one of the Manyang crew warmed my heart.
Joowon is right-Dongsik is the one their family has loved first. But it is Joowon they now fiercely love more, because it is Joowon who needs that love more.
And isnāt that the truth. Not that Dongsik doesnāt need it, but he already has it. Has had it for years.
"Your best man has finally arrived," he informs Joowon softly.
Park Jeongje CAME as Joowonās BEST MAN. Iām not crying. I donāt know why but Jeongjeās declaration of ā⦠Vengeance.ā had me cracking up.
Of course, Dongsik was clueless about Jihwa and Jaeyiās relationship.
"None of it was a secret," Joowon informs him wryly. "You were just blind and dense."
Too wrapped up in Joowon and too close to the girls to see what was going on.
I donāt have words to describe how I feel about Hyeok and his father and how you have intricately woven them into Joowon and Dongsikās life giving every one the family they deserve.
"-godbrothers," Hyeok finishes breathlessly.
Joowon takes a deep a breath as he steps closer to Hyeok, who is looking at him like he has just performed a miracle. "A year ago, hyung, I was told that-in the hospital, you were not considered my family."
Meanwhile Kwon Seungjo beams in the background. āItās a two for one deal.ā
Just⦠I have no words. I am just so incredibly happy, sobbing, but happy. Thank you so much for sharing your amazing gift with me and with all of us. It was the perfect ending to my stay in, of all places, Korea ā¤ļø
When youāre accused of a crime isnāt it natural to deny it?
A guilty person will deny it.
An innocent will deny it.
But Lee Dongsik never does this.
The entire time Han Juwon was hounding him he threw out taunts and his own accusations expounding on Juwonās belief that Dongsik must be guilty.
I alway wondered why he didnāt say, āI didnāt do it.ā Not that Juwon would have believed him, but not even saying it once? To the accusation that he killed his sister, his twin? He must have been choking on the words. So why? Why allow this arrogant little shit to continue to show up day after day and push him around?
In his own way Dongsik was protecting Juwon. Because what ifā¦
What if he actually convinced Han Juwon that he WAS innocent. Because Han Juwon is smart. Heās got the wrong guy this time, but heās still smart. The evidence might persuade him. But what then?
What if Han Juwon gave up Lee Dongsik as the suspect. No, no it would be much worse than that.
What if Han Juwon took his stubborn self and his relentlessness and started hounding someone that really was a killer.
āOh ho, look at your little self. Did you just brake into my basement and no one knows youāre here? I just happen to be fixing up this hole that happens to be body shaped. Let me show you.ā
And Han Juwon was never seen again.
Maybe itās not likely, but thatās where Dongsikās mind goes. People disappear in this town.
So he smirks and acts the crazy everyone thinks he is just enough to keep the kid coming back to him, to his basement, and if his shirt collars continue to be wrinkled⦠oh well
Shin Hakyunās letter to Yeo Jingoo
I look forward to meeting you again through our works even 20 years from now
part 2 here
realizing dongsik calls juwon by his first time and not his title or full name for the first time while assisting in his own arrest.
āItās not just where you lay your head. It's not just where you make your bed. As long as we're together, does it matter where we go?ā

Beyond Evil, episode 15
[ID: 2 gifs from episode 15 of the show Beyond Evil, showing a closeup of Han Joowon with his eyes down; he moves from resting his chin against his folded hands to bite at his left thumb. /end ID]
I'm about to start the final episode. I've never been this close to nervously biting my fingernails.
āCause you were the reason that I survivedā
Make it Right
If the universe did not want me to be this way, it should not have put so much rot in my blood.
āJuwon-ah!ā Dongsik can hear his own voice breaking on the name. Desperate. Pleading. āI told you.ā Tears are blurring his vision, but he canāt breakdown. Not now. This canāt be the end. How to cross this distance between them? āI told you that youāre not your father.ā
Juwon laughs loud and agonizing. He shakes his head. His feet slipping in the muddy grass. āItās not about that. Iām not my fatherās son.ā Said with such certainty as if he believed it. His knees hit the ground either from the wet soil or Juwon has finally given up on running.
His hands are shaking, and he holds them up as if in offering as he looks up to Dongsik still some yards off above him. Theyāre covered in blood. Itās smeared up his coat and flecks splatter his neck. None of it is his.
The howling wind ghosts down the hillside dancing the reeds around them almost stealing Juwonās last confession. āBut I am my motherās son.ā
I do not want to be loved gently. I want to be understood violently.
āI had lived just for the moment but once I met you I realized that everything had a meaning.ā
Fallin Flower šŗ
For @vindicated-truth who always gives the best song recommendations. I hope I did it justice ā¤ļø
I'm currently preparing for an international trip which I'm supposed to depart for in a few hoursāand the main reason why I've been mad busy with real life latelyāand I really should be getting sleep at the moment, but I cannot not react to this incredible masterpiece because oh my god.
Oh my god.
Both Beyond Evil and SEVENTEEN are incredibly close to my heart and so precious to me, and to see it so seamlessly integrated like this fills me with overwhelming joy and gratitude (once again!!!) for @eonni92 because you didn't even know it's my birthday soon and yet this is already the best birthday present I can ever ask for.
And what overwhelms me the most is how you've truly distilled the essence of the song and how the entire meaning of itāone of my absolute favorite songs in the whole world, bar noneāfits so perfectly for Joowon and Dongsik.
"He waits for someone to approach him first. But he's too weak to make the first move. Even when someone reaches out, he won't even take that hand. He pretends to be okay, strong, and indifferent. He's a fool that will imprison himself for the rest of his life." "Nobody reaches their hands out towards the fluttering falling petals With a frigid smile that seems mixed with sadness"
The heartrending lyrics juxtaposed with Han Kihwan's cold words about his own son captures heartbreakingly perfectly the tragedy of how alone Joowon has always been, deprived of love the way a flower is deprived of sunlightāthe way a flower falls and dies without anyone reaching out to it.
Except when someone finally does.
When Dongsik finally does.
"Swaying, dancing"
Overlaying the lyrics with the swaying, dancing reeds at the field where it all begins and ends is such a masterful, perfectly poetic choice. Oh my god.
"The destination for this falling heart Could it be even warmer than it is now?" "Joowon-ah."
Once again, the choice of overlaying the lyrics with the warmth of the sunshine kissing their skin and their hair at Okcheon lake as Dongsik calls out Joowon's name with that new, heartrending familiarity and warmth, oh my god the perfection of it all.
"Withstanding the summer Being drenched in the light rain Wanting to fall for someone I have lived just for the moment but Once I met you, I realized that Everything had a meaning"
I am utterly in awe at the montage of clips chosen for these lyrics, and it gives me goosebumps at how perfect it's aligned with the lyrics, from the scene under the rain when it all began, when the perception of each other was shifting, to the meaning of the handcuffed hands willingly surrendered.
"Falling towards you I want to see you right now Someday, surely, you will be in my heart"
The hope in these lines. The hope of "someday, surely", that this is not the end, but rather the beginning of something new, something beautiful, is a such perfect reflection of the burgeoning, blossoming hope of a new startāone of peace, of joy, of love, for both of them, now that the ghosts of their pasts are finally laid to rest, so beautifully sang by DKāis such a shot to the heart with how impactful it all is.
The hope that, as the flower is dying, it will not die in vain.
Someday, surely, someone will finally come to appreciate this falling flower.
And that's exactly what makes the transition to the next lines and scenes so perfect, becauseā
"I am a flower" "Nice to meet you. I'm Inspector Han Joowon." "I am a flower" "What's a pretty flower like you doing in broad daylight?"
Oh my god I can cry. The juxtaposition of these scenes with these lines of the show enriches and deepens each other's meaning because yes, Han Joowon is the flower, the one that nobody used to reach out forāand yet here, now, is Lee Dongsik who finally sees him.
He finally sees him.
"I believe in letting beautiful flowers bloom" "Keep up the good work, Inspector Han."
And Lee Dongsik doesn't just take the flower for the selfish reason of keeping it until it dies. NoāLee Dongsik seeks to nurture that flower, to let it grow, to let it bloom.
Lee Dongsik finally sees the lonely, dying flower, and saves it just in time so it can finally blossom.
"To you, now, I'm falling"
And in return, Han Joowon isn't afraid of falling anymore. Even the impending natural death as a flower doesn't faze him, doesn't scare him anymore, because he knowsāhe will also be reborn. Over and over again.
Because that's what love is: dying and being reborn in the arms of the one you cherish the most.
The one who cherishes you the most.
It is Lee Dongsik who is handcuffed. But it is Han Joowon who finally, finally surrenders.
@eonni92, my friend, not only did you give the song justice, not only did you give the show justiceā
You did what the song is exactly portraying.
You made everything bloom.
I feel like Han Juwon, and I donāt know what to do with such high praise lol.
Where I struggle when it comes to writing, you were able to beautifully lay out exactly what l was trying to convey š«¶
I think this was the first time I was nervous to post an edit since my Korean is still very limited. But Iām working on it.
Fallin Flower is forever stuck in my head now as I must have listened to it 30 times and researched all the lyric translations to try to get the timing to mesh with the video clips seamlessly. I donāt mind at all though because itās such a beautiful song!
Reading your response was both a relief that it turned out good and almost as much fun as making the edit itself. Thank you so much for sharing your favorite song for me to play around with and return this for you! Happy Early Birthday!! ā¤ļøā¤ļø
