This is where it happened. I was sitting in the mall enjoying my coffee when I saw the couple walk over with their order and sit at the table right by me. They had coffees and she had a delicious looking dessert. They were young, they couldn’t have been older than 20. She was holding his hand, constantly smiling and laughing at everything he said. She was acting like someone who had found true love. Even as she sipped her coffee, she wouldn’t take her eyes off him.
Looking over at him, I saw a young man who was enjoying the company of such a lovely young girl although as I continued watching him, I couldn’t help but notice a touch of nerves. He seemed to be having fun but constantly looked around, panning the crowd. It was as if he was waiting for the right moment to ask or tell her something.
Then, it happened. He had brought her to a public place in order to break up with her. I guess he figured she wouldn’t make a scene in the mall. He looked her straight in the eyes and held her hand tightly as he began whispering something to her. I’ll never forget the way her demeanor suddenly changed. She looked confused and then angry. She abruptly pulled her hand away from his as she seemed to speak angrily at him. Nobody else seemed to be aware of what was going on before them. I couldn’t make out what was being said but I knew something was wrong. He leaned over and said something and she looked sad. He whispered something else and she held her hands on the table before her and looked down. He whispered yet again and she began crying. He looked coldly at his coffee and continued speaking. By now she was wiping her tears and sobbing. My heart was breaking along with hers. He leaned over to make another comment when I stood up and yelled “STOP IT, You’re killing her!”.
They looked at me in horror as did the other people that had been oblivious to the situation as they casually enjoyed their coffee. The young man got up and walked away. A few seconds later, she got up and walked in the opposite direction. I sat there till the coffee shop closed. Snapped this picture and went home.
