I Am Sorry.
I am sorry.
To my friends who are black and watching a candidate openly backed by the KKK near election, I am sorry.
To my Latino and Hispanic friends who are watching a candidate ascend who has referred to them as rapists and criminals, who has threatened to build a wall and deport them, I am sorry.
To my friends in the LGBTQ community who are terrified that they are going to be further discriminated against, be physically threatened, or lose their marriage rights if this candidate wins, I am sorry.
To my friends who are going to lost their healthcare if this candidate wins, or will no longer be able to afford the care that they need, I am sorry.
To my Muslim friends who have been deemed as "terrorists" for the last 15 years and now potentially face further discrimination if this candidate wins, I am sorry.
To my friends who are immigrants and refugees from all over the world who have a candidate who feels that they are a "problem" or burden, I am sorry.
To my friends who rely on services like Planned Parenthood, for their reproductive health, whether that means birth control, screenings, or abortion, which this candidate is threatening to remove, I am sorry.
To my friends who have been sexually assaulted and are re-traumatized by the seemingly-impending election of a pussy-grabbing monstrosity, I am sorry.
To my friends with disabilities who are seeing a candidate who openly mocks people like them near election, I am sorry.
To my friends who have to explain to their children how a childlike bully can ascend to the highest seat in the land, I am sorry.
To the thousands of men and women who fought and died to push this country forward, only to have us push it back into ignorance, intolerance, and fear, I am sorry.
To the rest of the world, especially those who look to us for guidance and support, I am sorry.
To those of you who are now in jeopardy because someone else chose to vote for a third-party candidate instead of voting meaningfully against discrimination, because they had the privilege to do so without directly facing repercussions, I am sorry.
Mostly, to my students, I am sorry. I am sorry that we have failed you. We have not educated you well enough to prepare you to be informed members of society. We have not exposed you enough to other cultures. We have not fostered your sense of empathy. We have not taught you to think critically. We have not taught you to check sources, so that you can separate fact from opinion correctly. We have not taught you to value respect. We have not taught you to value integrity or honesty. I am so sorry.
Even if this human sack of garbage loses, I am sorry that this election was this close.
