I've realised how long it's been, how much I never ACTUALLY did with this little AU I made centered around a jaded Sans and an adult Frisk.

Maybe I'll try to come back to it... because I may have thrown in some eldritch horror and Sans may be a bit more of a monster than he was before.

Branching timelines

Fun fact: Due to the nature of the glitch in Epochtale, each reset causes a branch in the timeline. Ultimately, this means there are dozens of alternate timelines branching from the first reset that caused the glitch, each existing simultaneously alongside one another in an ever expanding tree. It's not uncommon for frisks to find themselves in the wrong timeline if two reset at the same point in time. We follow only one of the Epochtale timelines.

Epochtale Sky

Unlike the canon timeline, the world of Epochtale doesn't have a sun in it's solar system. It is in constant twilight, the accumulative light of numerous stars enough to equal the equivalent of an overcast day during clear weather. As there is no day/night cycle, the surface dwellers have grown acclimated to this over generations of evolution. This, accompanied by the phenomenon of aurora borealis caused by magnetic fields in the atmosphere compose the entirety of natural light for the planet.

It’s been thirteen years since Frisk fell into Mt. Ebbot, not that the human had any knowledge of this. Nobody knows how many runs had happened before the glitch that began this anomaly. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves... let’s go back to the beginning... Back to thirteen years ago.

It happened on a genocide run, Frisk at the ripe age of 6 found herself face to face with the first fallen human, Chara. Still caked in the dust of fallen monsters, eyes welled with tears, Frisk trembled beneath the pinning gaze of that thing before her.

The reset didn’t happen like it usually did. Didn’t feel like it should have. This time, there wasn’t the sudden slice of a blade and the flesh rending pain of defeat at Chara’s hands. There was no scream, no spray of red, no death to end it all and trigger another beginning. Instead, there was a flash of static, the sensation of a million tiny dots needling her skin, the sound of crackling noise flooding her mind.

Frisk awoke on the ground, bathed in light from a gaping hole high in the cavern ceiling. Had she fallen? Had the small pool of buttercups cushioned her landing? Her body felt heavier than she could remember, her mind clouded with haze. In the far corners of her thoughts, it felt as though there was something lurking, the disconcerting feeling of being watched burning in her mind.

Although there was no one near her, no one in that remote section of ruins to greet her, Frisk didn’t feel alone. She’d never feel truly alone again.

Headcanon: Frisk's AU

As an adult, Frisk chose to continue living in the Underground. Instead of moving in with anyone or staying in the ruins with her adopted mother, she opted to get help building a home from various monsters in the underground.

Frisk has a modest two-story cabin in the Snowdin woods, approximately half a mile off the towns main path. It’s remote, isolated, and perfect for her. Great care has been taken to customize it to her tastes. Commissioning Alphys, an elaborate timed set of artificial sunlight lamps has been constructed on the outside of her home, concealed beneath awnings over each window. This gives the illusion of day and night if you are in the inside but is obviously artificial to anyone who has been on the surface before. She also has a few small collection of surface flora and food that she gets from regular trips to the surface. There are no markers to help navigate to her home, just her memory. Her bedroom walls are blanketed with countless pictures of her through the years with various friends in the underground, adopted family, and her trips to the surface.

In this AU, Frisk still ages despite resets happening. Since she is 19 now, she’s been living through repeated resets for approximately 13 years now. During a reset, physical items don’t always return to how they were before her fall. Her cabin, her age, photographs, letters, and various other physical items in the underground remain. Because of this, she has proof of her aging that gives her the illusion of false memories.

Monsters, however, do respawn. Although her current ‘run’ is pacifist, she has had numerous neutral and even genocide runs in her past resets, resulting in Chara having a lasting presence inside her head. The reset process causes some long term side effects when done in such a high number as she has. This includes the thin line-like scars on parts of her body, usually caused by wounds that didn’t get reset correctly and ended up as traces of previous games. Likewise can be said for memories. Although she doesn’t remember resets, some key memories will linger behind as forgotten thoughts. This often gives her an overwhelming sense of deja vu.
