Itachi wasn't "bad" because he wanted to, but because he didn't have the privilege to be the good despite his intentions. He wanted to be a good brother more than anything, and that turning into a disaster has less to do with his intent and more to do with lack of the options throughout his life. Every time people pit him against other characters to prove how the characters he's compared to turned out better than him, they're ignoring the foundation of their situation. There wasn't a single moment in Itachi's life when he wasn't asked to make a choice and told his choices would trigger big events. Literally no one in canon ever experiences that level of external and internal conflict accompanied with the loss he feels at every step. The disaster his actions bring simply add to his burden, since he can never be absolved of them. What exactly is the point of claiming your favorites are better than him when he's always at the disadvantage, not because of his own moral failure, but because he literally did not get any chance to choose otherwise.

There’s a rant somewhere in me about Aang’s pacifism vs Itachi’s pacifism and how Itachi was willing to destroy himself to prevent a war and he was willing to commit acts of violence in the name of the greater good, regardless of his own morals whereas Aang needed a last second cop out because for some reason the ATLA writers can’t have their main character make difficult decisions for the greater good.
