I get in theory why people complain about het ships or whatever, I get wanting to watch queer media I really do, but I guess where y’all lose me is like. I saw some asshole on a post about Sinners complaining it was “hetslop”—this person was specifically doing so while also claiming Remmick was a queer character and thus they were justified in caring more about him than the Black protagonists. which is a whole other disgusting can of worms that has been well addressed by others at this point. but even in the absence of that part of the argument, like, no, i actually don’t think that a hunger for queer stories is an especially good excuse to deride and dismiss a piece of landmark Black filmmaking, especially as a non-Black person. I have a post that’s been going around encouraging folks to engage with more Native stories and characters, and I had someone come onto that post saying in the tags that they’d need these stories to be queer in order to care. and I just think that, you know, sucks! like obviously as a queer Native I also want to see more of those stories too. but idk how else to put it other than to say that Black people and people of color shouldn’t have to be like you in order for you to care about our narratives and experiences. and I think some of y’all are using this disdain for heterosexuality as a cover for your unexamined racial biases. it’s not okay to be racist to people just because those people happen to be straight, and you continue to be white before you are queer.

on an even more basic level than that, also, I simply just think some of y’all NEED to learn how to interact with media and storytelling without ships and fandom in mind. like if not being able to write fic about two men kissing is genuinely going to be a dealbreaker for you I think that’s actually something you need to work on within yourself because at that point I think you’re no longer really interacting with art and themes and narrative so much as just kind of playing with toys. which is, like, fine I guess. have fun. but it wouldn’t kill you to disengage from that from time to time. especially if would allow you to actually appreciate rich and deeply moving cultural stories from communities of color that you desperately need to learn how to see as human

2. Favorite fantasy book(s).

Robert E Howard - The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian. These short stories feel foundational to sword and sorcery fiction, much like most people feel Tolkien is to high fantasy. I love the texture of them, at times very visceral despite the setting. Howard lived from 1906 to 1936 and wrote pulp fiction, ranging from Conan and other fantasy works, but also sports fiction, so he had a great hand for action and physicality

Michael Moorcock - the Elric of Melniboné series. This is very high fantasy and is written like it, with prose Hemingway lovers will probably consider deeply purple, and a tragic, angsty protagonist. Credit partially goes to Wendy Pini (of 70s Elfquest comics fame), who published an art and design book about a (failed) project to animate the novels, and I was so enchanted by her tender rendering of the characters I picked the books up and never looked back.

Anne McCaffrey - Dragonriders of Pern series. I could fill pages with my problems with these novels surrounding gender and sexuality, but this was also my original introduction to dragons and dragon riders, and the lore is amazing even in the places where the novels don't hold up.

Peter S Beagle - The Last Unicorn. In my opinion, most modern fantasy novels need to explain themselves less; Beagle doesn't have any systems or special powers for his hero to uncover. Everything here is written as if magic is real and painfully a part of yourself, and the plot rolls along letting the characters deal with the consequences of taking actions without fully comprehending the outcomes.

12. Favorite horror book(s).

Horror is one of those genres I find I love but is also very subjective. If the objective is to provoke feelings of fear or unease or revulsion, those feelings always vary from person to person. This almost always works better in film or TV for me.

Some of the ones I enjoyed the most:

The Descent - Jeff Long: not related to the movie, but very similar in content; subterranean, lost in the caves, unseen threats

Stephen King's greatest hits, The Shining, IT, The Stand, but also Insomnia and The Long Walk - King has a talent for writing characters who are kind of repugnant in a way I find realistic. I think he catches a lot of flak for a lot of good reasons, but I love the gore, the tension, the occasional edge of hilarity to it all, the fact some of his characters sometimes die in terrible, undignified ways instead of in cool ones.

The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson - I don't have a lot to say here that wouldn't spoil the mood. This is a book I think either you resonate with or you don't.

Clive Barker - most of his work, written or not, is fun even when it isn't terror-inducing. We love a gay man in horror

I don't track my reading at all! I have a list of ebooks sorted into a folder marked To Read and I have a pile of physical books sorted into a similar pile in my office. It's fairly intermittent -- I read three novels in two days last week, and some weeks I won't read fiction at all in favor of nonfiction, research, or my own writing.

I'd love to see something out of Robert E Howard's list adapted by someone who deeply loves the material. The Conan the Barbarian/Conan the Destroyer films have a lot of charm for the time period when they were made, and Grace Jones was a stunner, but we don't have a lot of modern, high budget sword and sorcery type stuff.

I used to use Google docs, but the white mode only was really annoying me (tires my eyes), so I swapped to Ellipsus (which I genuinely love and recommend), but it was bothering me a bit that I need wifi in order to use it, so now I switched to LibreOffice Writer, which I do like.

It very much has a Microsoft Word feel, but is open source and you need no accounts to use it. It's local on your device, so no AI can scan it, and no wifi is needed.

I still wish it had the Google Docs cards, because, bitch, that thing is so good for easy organizing.
