Final girls
the issue is i fear that you all love gay people. but you do not consider gay women to be gay. or people.
male celebrities and athletes will be outed again and again as violent abusers and rapists and still sell out stadiums and rack up millions of streams but the moment chappell roan is vaguely adjacent to rudeness it’s fucking 9/11 online
yesterday i had a nice southern teenager call me "ma'am" and then look at me and go, in a well-meaning tone, "uhhhh, if you go by ma'am. sorry if not." and i had to be like yeah man ma'am is fine. appreciate you being inclusive though. i could almost see the little warning pop up in his UI-- hold up! people with blue hair often have pronouns. are you sure you want to address this individual with a gendered term?

UNGRATEFUL tech companies are saying things like "turn off your ad blocker" and "we need your photo id" instead of "thank you so much for not just pirating our shit, youre so handsome"
Thinking about how Shauna and Nat both design their lives post-rescue in ways that maximize self-punishment because of the intensity of their guilt. Nat’s is more obvious: her self-destructive tendencies, never allowing herself to have a home/living as a nomad, pushing people away before they can get close to her, drug use, etc.
And Shauna’s life, while it appears well-adjusted and peaceful on the outside, is torture for her! It’s a confining cage in which everything she has always wanted and needed remains unfulfilled. It’s painfully mundane. She’s married to someone who bores her and who is also a living, breathing reminder of her guilt and self-blame around both her betrayal/loss of her best friend AND the loss of her son, as Jeff is inextricably tied to the pain of both of these.
She doesn’t let herself get emotionally close to her daughter at all because she believes she doesn’t deserve that closeness and fears losing another child due to her own perceived dangerousness. And her main craving has always been recognition, yet she has chosen a life as a housewife in which she feels just as invisible as she did pre-crash. She does this on purpose after what she became in the wilderness. Shauna’s guilt is often less obvious because she attempts to externalize it through aggression and blaming others, but her life post-rescue is blatant evidence of the intense guilt and self-blame she feels beneath it all. The manifestation of Shauna’s guilt looks like functionality, which is exactly why it’s so often missed by others.
Shauna’s annoyance at Natalie’s tendency to wallow in her own “endless pit of guilt” in the adult timeline is projection, because in reality she’s living the same way, and even Nat is quick to call her on it.
While some of the other survivors attempt to recreate the wilderness and the fulfillment it provided in various ways post-rescue (Misty becomes a nurse to replicate her role as the wilderness medic and fulfill her need to be needed, Lottie creates her cult to recreate the sense of belonging and purpose the Wilderness provided, etc), Shauna and Nat in particular seem to deliberately choose lifestyles that punish them for the catharsis they experienced in the wilderness.
this is the truest thing I've ever read in my life

"thought crimes aren't real, it's your actions that matter" and "your mindset informs how you treat others, so you should try not to have a shitty one" are another pair of things that are both true btw
while i completely agree w the sentiment of the tweet, i think the reason why “but they were a citizen/legal immigrant” is brought up is bc conservatives will try to argue that it’s perfectly reasonable to implement these immigration measures, bc they claim to just want reform in the way immigration is enforced. but the knowledge that ice agents target citizens/non citizens alike, regardless of the legality of their status, emphasizes that ice’s operations were never about legality or truth. they are purely about wielding power over those PERCEIVED as undocumented (regardless of whether or not they are). i think it’s an important distinction to make that not only is it wrong to treat any human being the way ice treats ppl, it tells us that this was never a good faith attempt to address concerns over immigration; that was all just a farce in order to justify the targeting poc, immigrants, and political dissidents. it’s also a big eye opening moment for ALL americans (including white citizens) that no amount of the usual privileges (or proximity to those privileges) will protect any of us from state violence.
KKK said the same thing about the hoods.
People will be so mean to teenagers do you literally not remember what it was like to be sixteen. Every time I talk to a teenager I feel I should hold their hands and tell them I think they're one of the bravest people on the planet just for choosing to endure but I don't because I don't want to be creepy.
omg you people can do anything
