Man, I almost drank myself to death yesterday, I can't even remember my name, if only there was someone that could help me.

Sorry but I can't allow this to remain just in the tags
as promised, Shadow wears a cutesy dress: the comic :3
(Don't pay too much attention to the dialogue or story here, this comic was just an excuse to draw Shadow in a dress LOL)
up next is. uhhh... what did Sonic do now? who knows!
voice offscreen: Hi, excuse me, i have an appointment for today?
*pause*
second voice: he’s new
first voice: oh. okay
it is not going well
Trying to figure out if you’re ace or aro can be so goddamn hard because it’s like, trying to find the absence of something. Imagine you’re at a pond and you want to know if there are any turtles, or fish. Say you find a turtle and you’re like “great! Now I know there are turtles.” Or a fish, now you know for sure there are fish. Or you find both, and now you know for a fact there are both turtles and fish in the pond.
But like, if you don’t find any turtles it might be that there are no turtles or maybe you’re just really shitty at looking for turtles and maybe you THINK you saw a turtle over there or maybe it was just a stick. Maybe there are only a few turtles. Maybe you need to do something special to find the turtles. Maybe a bunch of these rocks are actually turtles but you couldn’t tell them apart. Maybe there are no turtles. You have no idea. Meanwhile some people are saying “Oh there have to be turtles! You’ll find them eventually ;)” or “How many turtles have you found in your pond?” or “Try planting some vegetables at the shore to attract the turtles.” Or “Oh no! What disaster happened to your pond that there are no turtles?” And you’re just standing there wet with an empty net and a tired expression.
But whatever because whether there are turtles or fish or not your pond’s ecology works just fine without them because that’s what eco-communities do they form a system around what they have. You aren’t missing anything if you don’t have turtles you just have a pond system without turtles. If someone tried to change you by pouring a bunch of turtles into your pond it would probably fuck something up.
So you don’t have to be entirely sure. You don’t have to search every inch of the damn pond before you can decide there are probably no turtles. If you want to take the aro or ace label because you think it fits go for it. And if you do find your turtles you can rename the pond. That’s fine.
This is exactly what I needed to hear, +
“I’m aroace until proven otherwise”
really not sure when it happened or why but personally I'm pissed that the queer community at large seems to have given up ground on the "people with penises/vulvas/testes/ovaries" language to sex & gender essentialists in exchange for the much less precise, much more demeaning "AGAB" language.
is it because you're scared of the word vulva? of acknowledging out loud that some people have penises? of recognising that many many people, including but certainly not limited to trans people, have mixed sex characteristics that cannot be accurately summarised by "afab/amab" as shorthand for "female/male"?
"in [GENITAL RELATED] situation AFABs will need to do X and AMABs will need to do Y" there are "afabs" with penises and "amabs" with vulvas. Saying this shit makes you look so unserious & honestly transphobic (given the ongoing erasure of post-op trans people within broader community). Intersex people and GRS have both existed for long enough (fucking forever and, decades, respectively) that we should well past making this basic fucking mistake.
quit referring to people by a vague & often violent event that happened at their birth as though it defines ANYTHING about how they & their body currently operate, and start using precise language so you at least look like you know what you're fucking talking about.
i agree, and will add:
do NOT say 'people with a vulva/vagina" when you talk about PERIODS AND BIRTH CONTROL. the term you want is FUNCTIONNING UTERUS.
lots of trans women and transfem people (including intersex ppl, *including cis women*) can and do get bottom surgery. the procedure in itself does not make actual-blood-loss periods happen, though, because long-lasting uterus transplant is Not A Thing (yet?) and *the blood comes FROM THE UTERUS*. if it's about *side effects* related to *hormones* (so, not punctual iron deficiency, bc that's linked to the blood loss…) then… it's about HORMONES. again, not external(ish) physical characteristics like a vulva or vagina!
agab language can be useful and appropriate in some contexte, but when talking about medical stuff, PRECISION is indeed what we need. and "assigned gender" is anything but that.
DING DING DING we have a good addition to the post!!!!!!
precision is key.
"estrogen dominant" and "testosterone dominant" endocrine systems are also useful terms, especially when interfacing with doctors.
Say what you mean. I hate so much when people say something to be politically correct and it comes out untruthful or technically wrong.
AMAB / AFAB mean assigned a certain sex at birth. They usually, but do not always mean the person grew up as that sex or was raised as that sex. If you mean "raised as (fe)male" then say that. That point is relevant if you are discussing learned socialization or experiences growing up.
If you mean assigned a certain sex at birth, then say that.
If you mean having a penis or vulva, say that. If you mean having testes or ovaries, say that.
If you mean "(fe)male-presenting" (I.e. perceived as a certain gender by most people) then say that.
Different aspects of sex or gender are relevant to different discussions.
By using language precisely and accurately, we clarify the way gender works.
I agree with most of this but would also specify further that (as I've argued in the past) that the term "(fe)male presenting" is not the same as "(fe)male perceived".
where "presenting" implies intention on the part of the person veing viewed, "perceived" takes into account all the social biases and preconceived notions/assumptions about gender that the viewer might have.
it's not my intention if someone sees me - a heavily bearded trans man with long hair, large breasts, dressing femme because I'm gay - as a woman. that's just how I dress. that's someone else's perception of me, and while I'm often aware of that perception, that's not what I'm presenting. Presentation is active.
idk. just a distinction I'd like to see more of bc I often see "presenting" language weaponised against GNC folk of all stripes.
To those in the notes who are recreating yet another dichotomy: you gotta stop. "innies and outies" "bepenised or bepussied" stop. There are intersex variations and bottom surgery types that leave people with genitals that are not so clearly defined by this dichotomy. Did you know about phallus preserving vaginoplasty? Did you know about phallo/metoidioplasty without vaginectomy? These people exist and shouldn't be left out of your activism just because you want a quick and easy (bioessentialist) way to refer to sex organs.
Just say the words you fucking mean. be a grown up and say penis. it's not a bad word. No cutesy terms, no euphemising. Read the post again. And stop being annoying and intersexist in my replies.

[plain text: And as a side note- the word is vulva, or vagina (depending on what you're specifically referring to), NOT pussy. If trying to discuss something in clinical terms and you pair "penis" with "pussy" I'm going to laugh you put of the room for blatant sexism. /end plain text]
i was jumanji’d too when i was a kid but no one cared
i was also zathura’d. i got both jumanji’d and zathura’d. Statistical impossibility but sad and true
Can we not victim blame
Like many a Jewish Diaspora kid I grew up with a white and blue JNF pushka in my room. I even received a certificate for
On this Shabbos and as Hanukkah draws near (Dec 7th), I'd like to share this article, one of the only guides I've been able to find on where to buy candles for Shabbos/Hanukkah/etc that don't support the Jewish National Fund. For those unfamiliar with the JNF, it is a Zionist organization formed in 1901 to buy land for Jewish settlement, and among other things has been responsible for much of the ecological "development" (read: colonialism) of Palestine. One of its main efforts is in soliciting money from diaspora Jews to fund the Zionist project, and many of the larger brands of Judicia donate a portion of their proceeds to it. As Hanukkah candles begin appearing in stores, you might check the box and note a JNF logo on the side.
This is a list of candle companies that specifically do not donate a part of their proceeds to the JNF, one of the only articles of its kind I've never been able to find. The companies listed aren't all necessarily anti-Zionist or don't donate to Israel in other ways - I'd recommend researching bigger names like Manischewitz, for example - but Narrow Bridges Candles IS anti-zionist and explicitly supports and promotes BDS. I've bought from them before, they make beautiful beeswax candles of all kinds, and would highly recommend you get your holiday candles here if it's financially doable.
Good Shabbos and have a safe and beautiful Hanukkah, when you remember the miracle of the eight nights remember also the people of Gaza and the scarcity there.
Happy birthdayyy
