The sun casts its warmth along the vastness of the world. The waves glimmer in golden hues as Draco stands under the waterfall, wisps of dark blue rippling around his waist. Harry watches as he disappears under the water slowly, his distorted frame dancing around splashes of sky blue.

A few moments pass by until Draco rises, his opalescent hair soaked into a darker shade as his skin drips with drops of Jupiter. He turns, his face half-enveloped in the shadows as silver eyes scorch into Harry’s.

“Come,” Draco says, offering an elegant hand at him.

When Harry takes his hand, he feels his own melt into his as though he has finally reached him from another world.

Harry blinks, eyelashes fluttering against his cheekbones as slivers of memories flash before his eyes. Every single one contains the same image of Draco, his sharp face looking back over a scarred shoulder.

Darkness slowly clouds Harry’s vision, as though he’s been thrown somewhere between time and consciousness. After what feels like a hundred lifetimes, light appears before him in the form of slices of sun rays from the window.

Malfoy stands on the other side of the changing room, his emerald bathrobe hanging off his shoulder as he glares at Harry.

“What’s the matter, Potter? Never seen a naked bloke before?” Harry watches Malfoy's lips curve at his name. Déjà vu burns through the back of his mind — he’s certain he’s seen Malfoy like this before, the same look in his eyes, his skin soaked in droplets of silver.

Harry’s train of thought breaks at the sound of goggles clattering against the floor. Out of instinct, he reaches for it, the same time as Malfoy does. Their fingertips touch ever so slightly, and Harry feels the same spark of warmth he felt a thousand years ago, when he took the same hand under cerulean skies.

Sweat Equity

Written for April’s Drarry Discord Monthly Drabble Challenge: 192 words for “spring.” Rated G.

Their hands dive deep into the dirt. The ground crumbles between their fingers, dry and brittle at the surface, though it’s damp the further down they go. Once Harry’s shoulder deep, head turned out to breathe, a chill strikes up his arms. He should have worn a sweater.

“Do bones ever get tired?“ Ron says from a few feet away, his body mirroring Harry’s. "Because mine feel tired.”

Harry frees himself and flops back.

“I’d believe it.” His breath takes shape in the cool air: billows and fades against the lightening sky. “Everything else does.”

"So melodramatic,” Draco huffs. His body bows beside Andromeda on the other side of the circle. When he catches Harry’s eye, he smirks, a pale beacon nearly lost in his oversized Weasley sweater and the wilds where they’d chosen to build their future house.

Home.

Anyway. Harry should tell Draco about the smudges on his face, but keeps quiet. Back in their packed up bedroom at Grimmauld, alone–then, he’ll cleanse the loam from Draco’s body, fill it, too, with good intentions.

“Let’s start the blessing,” Hermione says. They take their places, reach down, and begin to cast.

when you walk out that door

april 2021 drarry discord drabble challenge | word count: 192 | prompt: spring

“I’m never going to be… nice,” Draco says between gritted teeth.

“I don’t want you to be nice,” Harry growls. “I want you to be you.”

Draco glares. “You don’t want me. You want an idea of me. You want something that doesn’t exist.”

“No, Draco. I want you.” Harry walks up to him, backing him up against the wall of his own office. Draco takes a shaky breath and meets Harry’s fierce gaze.

“You think I want you to be nice?” Harry continues, grabbing the front of Draco’s shirt. “That’s like… like spring without the rain. Sure, it’s pretty, but what’s the point?”

“I’m not good enough for you,” Draco replies, his anger dissipating. “You deserve better.”

Harry narrows his eyes, then lets go of Draco and walks toward the doorway. “You’re wrong,” he says, voice soft. “I’ll back off, though. For now.”

“Thank you.” But Draco feels no relief.

“I’m not going to stop being in love with you. And I’ll be here when you’re ready.” Harry steps out of the office and walks away.

Go after him, Draco’s brain screams. Go. Now.

Draco runs out the door after Harry.

deeper and deeper

They're together two years before Harry tells his friends. It's snowing outside, and Harry lays open and quiet all winter, waiting for them to tuck his insides back in for him. "Didn't seem worth it," he echoes when they ask why did you hide from us why are you ashamed don't you know we love you, forever, forever, their voices faraway like from the bottom of a canyon. But the sun dawns with time, and Harry with it, heavy and warm, as though Ron knit a jumper between his kidneys before he stitched him back up.

In the brave light of after, stories bloom unbidden from his chest, pushing up and out his mouth, each more indulgent than the last. "Draco does this thing where he peels his oranges with his teeth. Narcissa hates it. She..." He gets lost in the retelling; travels down too many arterioles in attempts to explain why it's entertaining, or funny, or worth sharing (although they get it, they say, smiling). In truth, Draco is never that interesting — and isn't that interesting too, how the shape of worth changes with the seasons, changes when you're in love?

I sleep with the light on

It rains in March. Harry says he’ll be home by June.

The air here is wet and hot and heavy. The rain builds up; floods me to my knees till I’m swimming in it. Our motorbike starts up without much trouble, and I fly it through the downpour.

I’m searching, always searching. My Mark is as dark as the day I got it, but the sun never sets here. I sleep with the light on, because I’m scared.

I’m drenched in sweat and water, flying above the trees. I’m still soaked in shame, too. Harry tells me to keep dry for now; the rain should leave by May.

It hails in May. Harry’s beard is bushy and rough from the Romanian mountains. He grins that awful grin that isn’t awful at all.

“Missed you,” he says, gentle.

“I might’ve thought of you once or twice.”

“Fuck you,” he laughs, gruff and real.

The hailstorm batters our roof and windows—hard and fast and loud. I brew balm for Harry’s new dragon-fire blisters; he smiles, and cries a little too.

We sleep with the light on, because we’re scared. We’re always scared, a little.
