“Mescaline” - Robert Francis

A few months ago, I heard Francis’ “Boy Like That” after talking with a guy from Discord, and while listening to the song at work this past week, this track played after it and I just fell deep into it.

The vocals, the power, the melody and this warm feeling, although the entire song is dressed as a sad ballad. The lyrics drag you along for what appears to be a drug-fuelled ride, or simply a life gone awry with tragedy and numbness.

And honestly, if there’s ever a song to cry to while driving down a highway, this is it.

What I will admit is the love I feel for their pretty awesome discovery weekly playlists (which you get regardless of subscription). In the last five months, it’s led me to Nina Simone, Daughter, and Canada’s (and my) bæ.

This week: New York City-based @pwrbttmband and their ode to what all of us aspire to. Whether or not they find “bleeding” lipstick or shopping is very much a personal preference. (I hate shopping and neat lipstick is not required.) It’s a short and sweet track takes you straight into an energetic chorus of queer punk and asking for a date at the same time.

Better than I could imagine. I could learn something from this.

An epileptic video nightmare wrapped up in a song so light and frothy, it’s almost worth finding out if you’re sensitive to flashing lights and rapid pulsating images.

Well, probably not, but that track though.

“Tennis Hoops”

Not a fan of rap music, but when I heard this track, I was attracted to that subdued atmosphere of rap, electronica, and indie sewn together with a thick backing beat. This song is out of my comfort zone, but it definitely does bring me a little closer to it.

“Hook”

A great folk-rock track executed so well that it hooks you immediately. You can’t resist but to move in tandem with the beat as it hits on country-inspired guitar riffs. And the vocals, a nice authentic topping on the song cake.

“Shaking” 

Many people hope for a White Christmas. Not too many are for a wet Thanksgiving. Socked in with rain for three days, we spent them inside, listening to music ticking the day away. I heard this track from Austin-bred Max Frost and absolutely fell in love with it.

Denton Again

A month ago, I won two tickets to Oaktopia, a music festival held in Denton from the 25th to 27th of September, thanks to a radio contest held by KXT (Dallas).

I took @freaks--of--nature​ as my guest and we had a blast, even if traffic delayed us (which it did going and coming back) on both days we attended.

The first band we heard was a duo from Denton playing this jazz signature made famous by Ray Charles. I promise this rendition by Matthieu Boré is like molasses: thick, sweet, and oh-so-right.

What a week. Praise whatever higher power there is that tomorrow is Monday and that new events will push out the old events. First time I’m excited for a Monday. Dear Jesus.

Of course, a little doom and gloom (courtesy David Byrne) just adds the cherry on the parfait, honestly. It’s healthy in small doses, bruh.

Mornings coming!

This week started off great and has quickly went downhill like very quickly. My friend Mark has been invaluable in allowing me to see the light.

Thank you Mark.

Pursuing life and all that follows is a begrudgingly accepted challenge. Whether it’s good or bad, we know that the sun will come out again, shine down upon our heads, and remind us how much more there is to see.

“Tonight, Delights”

As this blog suggests, I’m a picky listener when it comes to music. The tracks have to hit my sweet spots before I succumb to its siren sounds. And believe it or not, this track did it for me.

While not a big fan of electronic music, this is a great use of that genre, with fast-paced vocals and a visual stream that can only be described as “amazing.” Enough to keep you all through the night.

“Teach Me To Speak”

On a personal note, I’ve just had the best weekend ever. Filled with lots of music (i.e. really bad electronica/dubstep), thinly-veiled rudeness, and the best sense of normalcy I’ve ever known. Also, lots of “They’re-probably-having-sex-next-door” gossip.

From what can only be described as a sense-fuck, something I would have never come across lest I was exposed to it.
