Oils for BURNING MAN
Every time Mark and I go on a trip, we always bring a few oils as a "first aid" oil kit. We usually bring Lavender & Peppermint, as one is calming and the other helps with digestion*.
But what to bring to Burning Man? The environment at Burning Man is hostile: extremely hot during the day and freezing at night. The dust is basic, so it dries out your skin until it cracks, and several people bring vinegar & water spray bottles to spray acid on their hands and feet, to soothe them. With the heat, you can get extremely (dangerously) dehydrated, too.
Then there's human activity-- half of the point of burning man is to experience the light and arts at night-- so you're up all night and sleeping at irregular hours. Then, there's usually a break down or two, usually around Wednesday, when you're either too tired or dehydrated to keep your emotions at bay.
So, are there any oils that I can bring that can help address the Burning Man world? I've pulled out our big tin boxes of oils and am going to go through them NOW, create the kit while writing. What do we have...?
Ah, a ton of facial masks from last year that I ended up with and never used, and that got put with our oils when we moved last week. Wonderful. :p
Peppermint & DigestZen-- I'm going to bring Peppermint for both, as a drop or two with water is refreshing, while putting it on your feet and the back of your neck is cooling. Woot.
Lavender is a given, since I use it on my face every day and night. It's also calming, which helps with nerves and can help ensure that you relax.
Birch... Mmmm... smells like Wintergreen. But why would we bring it?
On Guard To keep our immune systems up. Especially as we deal with the stresses of extreme elements and sleep patterns.
Serenity Ah, I love the smell of Serenity.
AromaTouch-- well, I think Lavender can do for that. It's nice, and our feet will get tired, but the lighter the load, the better.
Now what, Elevation or Balance? Elevation sounds wonderful, while Balance seems necessary. I think both-- Elevation for going out and doing really fun things at night-- like walking on those light-up rings or seeing amazing light art. Balance for the Wednesday crisis, when you need it.
Purify to put on before my vision quest trek, which will probably happen on Wednesday as a Wednesday night walk to the man.
Frankincense for the night of the Burn.
SO... the Official Burning Man Kit includes:
- Lavender
- On Guard
- Peppermint
- Elevation
- Balance
- Serenity
- Frankincense
- Purify
I think Serenity will be nice... also for hanging out in the HeebeeGeeBee tent this year, and for the contemplation that I plan on doing. The Burning Man trip becomes, for me, a vision quest. This time, I'm looking for change in my life. Change, and direction, and to get energies moving. Maybe a good fire-type of oil would help. Something about motion and energy.
I think I will also bring Young Living's Abundance Oil.

What would you bring? Any additions or changes?
Lavender Oil
I put doTerra's Lavender Oil on my face every morning and evening, just after I wash. The last time I got a facial, my aesthetician advised me to put the oil on. I looked up at her face, which was nearing sixty and looking tight and beautiful (and rosy and happy) and decided that she might be onto something.
She says to add the oil just after you wet your skin, so it absorbs more easily. Really, the oil is a lipid so it can go straight into your skin molecules, making them all fat and plump. Making your skin look young, happy, healthy. And this is what's happened. You know, I used to have tired-looking skin and thought I looked forty though I was 29 (now 30). But, now, that isn't the case anymore. I look more like my age.
What about adding oil to your face and having acne problems? I don't know. She says that this is different. That it really is a misconception. What do you think?
All I know is I've been doing it twice a day, every day, and the results have been awesome. I add oil, then doTerra moisturizer in the eve. or sunblock in the a.m., and am ready to go!
Would you try it?

Spreading the Oil
I spent about three days on thisĀ post card-sized flier! So glad it's done-- and thanks, Dave, for your design help! This Last Thursday (there's a big arts festival here in Portland every Last Thursday), I'm going to hand out 100 of these babies to moms and women. Hopefully, it'll catch on!
What are some of yourĀ marketing strategies for doTERRA?
doTERRA Lollipops
This cute little girl is Penny, daughter of my friend Claire Flint (photographer extraordinaire), who is enjoying a delectable doTERRA lollipop from my wedding. We decided to make lollipops as favors (along with heart-shaped birdseed bird feeders). The lollipops were a HUGE hit, which surprised me. Special thanks to my maid of honor, Alexis, for making it happen.
The pops were flavored with doTERRA's On Guard, which is delicious, as well as Lemon oil, lemon zest, and Earl Grey tea. The On Guard gave the pops a complex, spicy flavor that was as delicious and interesting as the wedding itself (trampoline, pinata, dance music, etc. ;).
It's also a great way to get kids to take On Guard if they're not feeling well, or as a preventative measure. Though I don't think that the sugar is necessarily good for them, and you can run the On Guard on their feet, it's still a nice, somewhat healthy (sugar!) treat. If they're going to eat candy anyway, you can at least give them Essential Oil candy.Ā
We found the lollipop sticks and some small plastic bags at a craft store. You can use twist ties to tie them (we used thin, metal wire, which gave them a nice, rustic look).
Here's the recipe:
2 c. sugar 2/3 c. light corn syrup 3/4 c. water2 bags of Earl Grey TeadoTERRA Lemon Oil doTERRA On Guard Lemon Zest Boil water and add tea bags. Let sit for two minutes, then remove bags.
In a saucepan, blend sugar, corn syrup, and water. Bring to a boil over high heat, until mixture reaches 290 degrees. Remove pan from heat. Allow to stand until bubbles have simmered down. Add doTerra Lemon Oil, doTERRA on Guard, and the lemon zest.
Too much stirring will cause syrup to solidify into a hard sugary lump.
Lay out lollipop sticks onto a baking pan, about 2" away from each other.
Spoon out the mixture and place, as dollops, onto the sticks.
Wait about 5 - 10 minutes, until completely cool, then pop off.
Voila! Enjoy :).

Home Brew or The One Hour Solution
SO... yesterday Hubby and I were talking about doTerra and he was encouraging me to try it. He'd received a large payment because he's been in doTerra for awhile, whereas I've just joined and my situation is very different. I was all, "you don't do anything! You wouldn't have to host doTerra parties!" which, I feel, is so not my style-- and yet, maybe I really don't know what it's like. I have this idea that it's 1950's style and selling things to my friends who may or may not be interested. I don't think it's generally that way at all.... and he does a ton of work with doTerra online, including months that he spent with his brother and family creating a huge website- not for the doTerra company, but for potential and current doTerra users. It's all done and basically waiting to launch (they had to hold off due to some legalities to get through).
Then, after he leaves, I start to read this book called Don't Worry, Make Money, Spiritual and Practical Ways to Create abundance and Mare Fun in Your Life by Richard Carlson, Ph.D. It's filled with tips and information for having an affluent, wealthy life. Each couple of pages focus on one key point, and it's filled with awesome introspection, facts, and information. I'd been reading it, but I put it down, and for some reason I wanted to read it again yesterday. So I picked it up and... the very next point was about the abundance that one can have by having a home-based business.
I'm reprinting that one small section here-- hope you enjoy it! Buy the book if you want more great information, it's totally worth it.
Experiment With The One-Hour Solution
Today, more than ever before, there are vast numbers of financial opportunities available to those who want one, and who are open-minded to doing something a little different. There are numerous part-time, home-based businesses that are turning ordinary people into millionaires. Many of these businesses are fun, easy, and require no more than a few hours a week. In addition, many of these businesses require very little initial cash to get into and no prior experience.
So what's the catch? Well, there is one, and you have probably already guessed it. As is so often the case, fear and worry are the greatest dream snatchers. The excuses I hear from people range from "I'm afraid I don't have the time" to "I'm afraid I can't do it" to "I'm afraid of what people will think." Fear is the single most self-defeating emotion in our lives.
What would happen if you decided to follow the advice of this book's title, Don't Worry, Make Money? As an experiment, I suggest the following strategy. I predict that if you banish worry from your consciousness and choose a credible, financially solid, ethical home-based or multilevel marketing business, you can become financially independent in as little as one hour a day. You don't have to quit your job, change careers, or take on a great deal of risk. Spend some time investigating what's out there. As around. Be willing to do something a little different. Keep an open mind. Don't worry!
The only catch is that you must actually spend a full, non interrupted hour, each and every day, doing what is the critical inch of that business. You must spend the hour without fear! You must not worry about the outcome, about what others are thinking about you, about your past failures, about the fact that you don't have very much time, or about the fact that what you are doing isn't in your nature, or anything else. If the most important part of the business is making phone calls, then you must spend the better part of your hour making those calls. You don't have to spend one minute longer than your agreed-upon hour, but for this experiment to be given a chance, you must give it an honest hour. I predict that if you pick a business that you love, and you faithfully spend your hour doing the key parts of the business (not simply busy work), that within two years you will be well on your way to complete financial independence.
The first and most important step is to eliminate worry from your life. If you choose to experiment with this strategy, I wish you the best of luck. I know you can be as successful as your imagination will allow.

Don't Worry, Make Money by Richard Carlson, PH.D., Hyperion Books, New York, 1997
Thinking about this... there are small and regular things that I can do, every day, or at least very regularly. Like write in this blog. Make fliers. Put the fliers up. Learn about the product and the business. Answer questions. Make a Facebook account (done!). All of these things are great and don't include having a "tupperware/oil" party with my nearest and dearest. We still give oils to our close friends, but we don't have to sell to them. I like that that way. I like to keep a clear delineation between my business and my friends-- so if my friends want anything, they can come to me like they would to a business. If I sold couches, I wouldn't try to sell them to my friends and invite them to couch-selling parties. I'm going to act the same way with anything.
Ciao!

Financial Abundance
Financial Abundance Itās true that selling doTerra can help you gain financial abundance. Thatās not the only reason to be involved with doTerra, but it helps. We are an essential oil family. When I first walked into my husbandās apartment, it had the deep, spicy perfume of an apothecary. He had vitamins and oils galore... especially oils. And he used and uses them, for everything. The other day our friend came over with a cough, and I walked into the kitchen to see C standing over the stove, a towel over his head and steam rushing into his face, as Hubby was dripping oils into a pot of boiling water below him. Weāve had our oil ups and downs, too. I remember my first massage with his collection of oils-- I was fighting the flu, and shoulder massages always make me feel better and, I swear, help me to work the flu out of my system. I feel like tension, stress, and whatever sickness just gather in my shoulders. So I happily took the offer, laid on the bed, and waited as Hubby dropped oils onto my skin. Unfortunately he used some highly reactive ones and before I knew it I was shrieking, āget it off!ā and trying to wipe my back with a towel frantically as he ran into the other room and came back with a bottle of olive oil. āLay down!ā he yelled, then poured half the bottle on my back. My new pants were ruined (or so it seemed.... we eventually got it out :p). So, my experience with oils has been a mainly beneficial, sometimes comical, one. But what about the financial abundance? I was laid off about five months ago. Itās been OK as I have wedding photography that I do on the side sometimes, and I have some unemployment, and I had a wedding to plan. Now that the weddingās over and unemployment will be ending in a month and a half, worry has started to creep in. Iāve been applying to several positions and even started a āLetās Get A Jobā club with my friends, where we meet at a coffee shop and look up jobs and send out resumes. Most of the time itās just me, emailing everyone, saying, āhey guys, hey, come on, play with me.ā Iāve even started babysitting, so I can have some extra coffee money to go out with my friends. Yesterday, when I came home from just such a babysitting session, I see a check for over a thousand dollars just sitting on the book shelf. It was for my husband. Heās been in doTerra for a very long time, and has his ālegsā set up and he does a lot of work for doTerra, in his own, computer-savvy way. Here I was trying to scrape up a few bucks and there he is with financial abundance through the oils. I was a little peeved this morning when he said that I could do that, too. He wants the best for me, but I donāt see myself holding oil parties like 1950s tupperware get-togethers. And I donāt see him doing that, either. But to be fair, he does do a ton of work online with his doTerra and, when he was younger, he had booths at fairs, etc., with his family. Heās put the work in. How does it work? Well, Iām not totally sure, to tell you the truth, but there are no physical stores. You have to get it through someone else. Which is fine and easy... and, I guess, makes the profit that would go into a store instead go directly to the seller. Well, not directly, itās split into the seller and all of the people who help the seller, I think. Whereās the doTerra article about this stuff? Hereās there official business opportunity page: http://www.doterra.com/us/companyCompensationPlan.php Imagine... instead of relying on a desk job, you get checks in the mail that would pay the same. And you get them because you love and use a product, and share it with others-- and some take it and run with it. Thatās awesome. Iām not saying to host tupperware parties. Iām saying to just somehow spread the word in your own way. And if you really want to host oil get-togethers, go for it. I know of some really cool ladies who do it-- just do your own thing. But somehow, keep it consistent. And keep it real. We use the oils because theyāre such high quality, and they work for us. - Paige :) Would you like an extra $1000 per month? What would you do with it?
Cleaning with Lemon Oil
Hello Folks!
I stood in the kitchen of La Palais, a bakery and catering company in San Jose, CA, with my very dear and good friend A, who put me to work making chocolate mousse and chocolate chip cookies, when the head chef poured a mixture of vinegar and lemon oil onto his counter and wiped it down. Vinegar and Lemon? He swears by it.To paraphrase, he essentially said this:
"We use bleach, of course, but I always have a mixture of lemon oil and vinegar on hand for cleaning. I was taught to do it and I feel better using it."
This Christmas, I created a "natural cleaning" booklet for my friend Andrea (not the A above), with tips and anecdotes about cleaning with natural ingredients, with several of the tips containing lemon oil.
Why is lemon oil so important in cleaning? It's highly acidic and non-toxis. The high acidity kills bacteria, which is why you can use it to mop your floors, clean your sinks, and scrub your pots.
What do you use lemon oil for? Do you have any tips and tricks?
Here are some lemon oil cleaning links that have oh, so much information that you might like and find handy.
(As an aside, my husband just said, "I'm happy to be married to you and if I had to do it over I'd marry you again" -- la swoon!)

Essential Oils
Wikipedia says this about Essential Oils:
"An essential oil is a concentrated, hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants. Essential oils are also known as volatile, ethereal oils or aetherolea, or simply as the "oil of" the plant from which they were extracted, such as oil of clove. An oil is "essential" in the sense that it carries a distinctive scent, or essence, of the plant. Essential oils do not as a group need to have any specific chemical properties in common, beyond conveying characteristic fragrances.
Essential oils are generally extracted by distillation. Other processes include expression, or solvent extraction. They are used in perfumes, cosmetics, soap and other products, for flavoring food and drink, and for scenting incense and household cleaning products.
Various essential oils have been used medicinally at different periods in history. Medical application proposed by those who sell medicinal oils range from skin treatments to remedies for cancer, and are often based on historical use of these oils for these purposes. Such claims are now subject to regulation in most countries, and have grown more vague to stay within these regulations.
Interest in essential oils has revived in recent decades with the popularity of aromatherapy, a branch of alternative medicine which claims that the specific aromas carried by essential oils have curative effects. Oils are volatilized or diluted in a carrier oil and used in massage, diffused in the air by a nebulizer or by heating over a candle flame, or burned as incense, for example. "
