What Kind Of Love
I donāt update much, but when I do, be ready for it.
Silver's garden keeps being destroyed, right before his eyes.
Silver just wants to appreciate the natural beauty of a world that he never got to experience growing up. Silver just wants to create something beautiful and prosperous to leave behind in that world for his friends.
It falls to ruin again and again.
And not passively. Each time, Silver's garden is sacrificed for a greater good.
Burned to ashes to create fertilizer so the next generation of plants can thrive on a poisoned warground.
Burned in order to quarantine them from healthy plants. Which also created a big enough commotion that it actually did get in the way of Rough managing to poison any plants besides Silver's.
Crashed into in order to divert a falling airship away from more populated areas.
It's a metaphor for Silver's future, which similarly falls apart before his eyes again and again.
Sometimes from ripples beyond his control.
Sometimes from self-sacrifice.
Silver persists, no matter what the world takes from him. Like a stubborn weed blooming through concrete.
So, Sonicās been kind of the driving force of Sonamy recently. Letās analyze that.
Iāll show Sonic having feelings for Amy in almost every media aside from Fleetway and the few cartoons she isnāt in. Iāll also present the āwhysā in more detail then just āAmy calmed down.ā While thatās part of it, Iād like to add my own can of worms. And possible headcanons too. Bear in mind I never grew up with Sonic, so forgive my mixed opinions.
While I love Amy having a crush on Sonic like the energetic sugarplum she is, nowadays Sonicās oddly been the drive of their dynamic. Any examples of it beforehand? Letās look outside of the games first.
Sonic X
This Sonic takes more time to himself. Heās introverted, so his feelings for her isnāt displayed as obviously as the others. In fact, most people think he didnāt like her in this show because of how much he runs away. He even manipulated her by flirting in one episode. In my opinion this show has Sonic running away from Amy more often than not. Hot take: Sonic and Amy never had a real conversation either. They didnātā¦talk like they do now. Unless you count,
āOh, Sonic I love you!ā āAh! Cāmon, Amy. Knock it off!ā No, it wasnāt constant but still common.
From my point of view, the conversations were short lived to none existent. It was the same in the earlier games too. Compared to how they talked to other characters or now, you might be able to notice. At least until Sonic And The Black Night where he talks to both The Lady Of The Lake and Amy. The two would also have visual gags of Sonic getting aggressively hugged by Amy. Or Amy falling on her face while trying. Aside from one moment in Sonic Riders where Sonic put Amy in danger, it wasnāt good or bad. Just cartoony for lack of a better term.
Maybe Iām just insane. You decided.
Anyhow, their dynamic in X is clearly built on actions. Like Amy giving Sonic a seashell bracelet and Sonic giving her a rose. Those little things. While I do prefer them being able to hold longer conversations, I donāt mind how X handles them. But letās get to Sonicās crush. I assume in Sonic X Sonic is conflicted. Heāll run away from Amy or try to pull from her on most occasions and others Sonic would constantly hold onto her when he doesnāt have to. For a long period on time no less. Amyās the same way. One moment sheād be head over heels and other sheās bashful. Goes to show how young they were I guess. I have no clue as to why Sonic liked her back because there wasnāt much to go off of. Except the bracelet moment or her general kindness like feeding him one time. She was a bit much to him and most characters back then.
Itās possible Sonic just liked her and that was it, but Iād imagine due to all of the hand holding and small reciprocated gestures were enough to convey something was there. Straight forward and simple like the show itself. I headcanon this Sonamy being where the boyfriend gets dragged into a relationship and is fine with it. This version of Sonicās attraction seems to be chaotic pink hedgehogs apparently.
Sonic Boom
Should I even explain it? Might as well because not only do I have something different to say, but these two havenāt been brought up much. Sonic and Amyās romance mostly is played for laughs. Not saying their love for each other means less because of that, but the humor is the main reason they exist. Much like why in the main canon they started out the way they did. Regardless, Iāll dive deeper into Boom!Sonicās affection for Amy to the best of my ability.
Boom!Sonic is egotistical, so whenever he thinks Amyās crushing on someone else, it bothers him. Apparently heās the only one sheās allowed to like. No āRadical Speedstersā or āCelebritiesā can take her attention away from him. Like in Sonic X he tries to keep his crush to a minimum. Even though both him and Amy are terrible at it.
The moment in āFortress Of Squalitudeā a episode where everyone is a bit rude to Amy, close to the end Sonic says, āWe may have a hard time saying it Amy. Butā¦well you know.ā Then she responds with, āYeah, I know.ā Itās such a sweet moment. Not as powerful as most moments with them but for Boom itās very nice. Sonic and the others still value her as part of the team, but itās Sonic who expresses it out loud. Goes to show how much he cares about her for even attempting to open up in this instance. Didnāt even have to finish the sentence. Amy understood perfectly. I also noticed how much he tries his best to impress her. When he needs to return her book back, finds her hammer in Archie, (Vector did it in the show and Sonic got jealous) shows off randomly or dreams about her, and stopped racing to get her some eggs in one episode.
The funny thing about this Sonic is how much of a people pleaser he can be. Especially since the towns people are very spoiled and ungrateful. He wants to be needed and thatās possibly why he goes out of his way to do special things for Amy like go out on picnics, implied dates, and comforts her. Sheās very take charge in Boom and Sonic has no problem calling her out when he needs to. Much like Amy in the show and games. Sonic will even put effort into doing things he doesnāt feel like doing for her. How honorable of him. Sure, sometimes he tries to make her jealous and isnāt perfect, but he tries. I believe Sonic likes Amy because again like Sonic X Boom isnāt canon, so more outright reciprocated feelings are allowed in this case. Not to mention the dude likes being shipped with her in the show. Which is a win in my book.
Sonic enjoys bugging Amy much like a playful boyfriend. He probably admires her leadership, but Iām saying this by observation. It could be for anything. Maybe he thinks sheās cute when sheās mad and finds her temper amusing. It could also be for her stubbornness. Some people like each other because of how much they can relate to their partner and in Sonic Boomās case theyāre two cuts of the same cloth. Although still different, due to the showās theme, they carry the same condescending, slightly self centered, hotheaded, stubborn, and humorous traits. But theyāre still good hedgehogs with a heart of gold and usually makes reasonable decisions. Not to mention theyāre both equally shy about their crushes. In Sonic Boom, Sonic and Amy is that married couple who doesnāt get along much, but when they do youāll understand why they stay together.
Reboot Archie Sonic
I havenāt read the comics (unless you count watching a few dubs and internet reviews) but Iāll give my limited thoughts. Luckily thereās not much to say. Although most people believe it was unintentional, I donāt think itās too much of a stretch that someone from Archie thought it was a fun idea to have Sonic crush on somone in this reboot. Maybe itās unintentional but it doesnāt seem that way.
Iām basically using this part of the post to ramble about how Reboot Archieās Sonic still manages to be a casanova. Heās like a mixture of his old self and how he is in the games. Thatās also why he acts the way he does around Amy. Could it also possibly mean heās meant to like her canonically too? Reboot Archie did have to follow a more accurate way of writing Sonic after all. Anyways, letās run down the list of Game!Sonic if he was allowed to be down bad for Amy like theyāre already dating. Which is how I view this continuity. Itās basically if Boom and X had a weird fusion and this version of Sonicās crush was the result. Except here he manages to be more bold and upfront. He knows what heās doing. Hereās a run down.
First of all, THIS. No joke, more of these interactions would send me to the moon. I would explain why but the panel speaks for itself.
Sonic says, āI was worried about you.ā Which he hasnāt admitted to her before this to my knowledge. He states this by giving her a side hug. Along with other out of nowhere physical affection and flirting. Not to single out Sonally fans. Sonic and Sally clearly have a close connection people appreciate and I respect that. In any case, Sonic and Amy in Reboot Archie also matches energies so much. Theyāre both clearly running off the same brain cell. Youād think they were together. Theyād be a chaotic couple thatāll do the most outlandish things and somehow manage to survive them. After willfully risking their lives theyād do it again because being normal and safe is boring. I promise you, this version of Sonamy would be a huge force to be reckoned with.
-Iād also like to mention my friend Salty showed an example of Sonic being jealous of Knuckles coming with Amy on a mission and itās brilliant. Dude gets all bratty about it too. Archie!Sonic does not play around. The post in question.
Sonic Prime
Already talked about this in another post, but I want to mention it again. Prime!Sonic is the most sensitive version of the character, so itās no surprise he displays his admiration for Amy freely and out loud.
This moment says enough on its own. Sonicās like this throughout the entirety of Prime and even changes the tone of his voice when speaking to or about her. Itās so authentic and adorable and makes him stand out against other variants.
Amyās crush on Sonic in Prime is up to interpretation, but I donāt think she likes him in that way personally. Like other characters, Amy tends to be done with Sonicās childishness. Guess she thinks heās probably too immature to be boyfriend material whether she has feelings or not. Sonic on the other hand, acts how you wouldnāt expect. I personally see him as his own interpretation, so Iām fine with it. If he wants to have goo-goo eyes for Amy in Prime, itās cool.
Prime!Sonic has it bad and I wouldnāt be shocked if heād be the one wanting to go out on dates. Maybe heād cook dinner for her sense he cooks in the show. Iād imagine Amy declining at first, but does it after his constant begging. Theyād be swapped version of most emotional to least emotional. Prime!Amy would be a girlfriend who feels more like a parent than a partner.
Unleashed/Black Night
No one can bring up Sonic Unleashed without the lovely Amy meeting the Werehog scene. I love how Sonic didnāt like Amy hugging him, but right after she left he solemnly mopes around for probably the first and last time. Heās never in any game slowly moped around disappointedly before. Proving he only has certain reactions when it comes to Amy Rose. At least in some continuities. Unleashed gives you a choice to go on a date with Amy or not. Then the next game Sonic Team followed through with it, but ended up having Amy mad at Sonic for missing it. At least Sonic tried. Not to mention his reaction to The Lady Of The Lake and him flirting is fun to watch.
See how Sonic still likes her back but it isnāt because sheās ācalmed down?ā Sheās still the same excitable love strucked Amy. There must be something more to it. Other than the obvious answer with Sonic Team wanting to do something with the pear. I have no idea why but having multiple hints even in the past mustāve been done for the fun of it. āWe created this love interest but then railed back to Sonic not reciprocating her feelings. But we still want to market them as a couple in some way.ā This franchise never cease to confuse me.
Amy encouraging Sonic in one of the cutscenes couldāve been where he started liking her back. Not in the way he does now, but he admired her none stop compassion and mightāve wanted to return the favor. āEh, sheās sweet. Maybe a date wonāt be so bad.ā The fact he went out of his way to get her a chilidog and flirted with a different version of her should tell you enough. Of course it would take a while before anything else happened. ļæ¼
IDW/Sonic Frontiers
Yeah, after issue 2, Sonicās never felt the need to run from Amy. From the comics to Sonic Frontiers thereās a lot of moments of Sonic being somewhat emotionally candid. Not by much, but close. I believe Amyās the reason for that in a way. Sonicās not afraid to hang out with her anymore. He even hugs her back on some occasions. āAmesā was a nickname from fanfics and Boom which became canon over time and he occasionally calls her that.
Sonic wishes to share an umbrella and spend more time with her. He also gets excited to see her more often. Itās like Reboot Archie but slightly toned down. At least up until the hard to trigger lines from Sonic Frontiers. The same game where he outright admits to being worried about Amy and smiles back at her with a Coco looking between the two. Then he supports Amyās decision to leave etc. We all know where we are now.
Crazy how the more you look into this franchise the more tiny details you notice. Itās also crazy how much Sonicās been into the love interest he originally was already supposed to love. To me, Sonic had a crush on Amy in Unleashed but fell in love with her in IDW. What makes Sonamy gripping though is how unique it is compared to most romantic relationships. Leaves it to be more entertaining whenever something unexpected happenes. It keeps you engaged.
Why Sonic Crushes On Amy?
1. Amy doesnāt want to slow him down. Obviously because of IDW issue 2ās love confession with Amy saying āI canāt change you. I donāt want to change you.ā Amy joins Sonic and he includes her more often because of that. His speed is no match for her persistence anyways.
2. She shows compassion and love for those around her. Not just to Sonic, but everyone. Sheās the definition of soft hearted. Even for people Sonic and his friends would be weary about. Think about now in the recent comics and games where Sonicās trying it out. I do think it should be more of Amyās thing then Sonicās but it just goes to show how much she probably inspired him. Who knows? Even in the past he had respect Amy for her tenderheartedness.
3. Amyās energy matches Sonicās. Though sometimes she can be overly enthusiastic compared to him. Even before now, Amyās always been adventurous and thatās probably something Sonic liked from the start. Not in a romantic way, but in a respectful way. If he were to have a partner heād need someone to keep him grounded and be on the same level. No exceptions.
4. Her loyalty. No matter what Sonic does (including times she disagrees) sheās one of Sonicās most loyalist companions. Obviously other characters are too, but Amy has her being a long time childhood friend/Sonic 06 and Unleashed going for her. 06 for trusting Sonic over Silver and Unleashed for still loving Sonic despite his transformation. Heck, before she knew who the Werehog was she wasnāt disgusted. Amyās commendable for that.
From all these points here physical attraction isnāt included. What I like about both characters is their crushes donāt stem to how they look. Though it is worth mentioning Sonic has called Amy āRadiantā in TMOSTH, but thatās probably the closest weāll ever get to an outright physical compliment. From Sonic at least.
- Side note thanks to @saltynsassy31 again, Sonic and Amyās dynamic can be summed up as not a relationship but rather a situationship. Yes, itās a real word. What does it mean? Basically two friends who has crushes on each other but doesnāt do anything about it. Just a fun detail for you guys.
Why Did Sonic Run From Amy In The Past?
Iāll make this quick, but the reason Sonic ran from Amy wasnāt because he didnāt like her. On the contrary. Sonic always couldāve ran at his normal speed to get away from her. Sonicās the fastest thing alive. Why would he let someone he ādidnāt likeā catch up to him? I personally think he enjoyed the thrill of the chase. Itās why I believe he misses it nowadays. Though I do understand Sonic didnāt often treat Amy like a friend. Not in a way I can understand at least. Not that I think their relationship was bad, but from what Iāve seen, it was more told then shown due to Sonic and the gang not including her on missions. Amy normally had to catch up with them which was a running gag. Especially in SA2. It might be why some prefere her in stuff like Reboot Archie, Boom, IDW, and Frontiers. Because Amyās friends includes her on adventures now. At least in my opinion. Correct me if I missed anything.
Final Headcanon
Since Sonic in the games has been the one to push the Sonic side of Sonamy much more then Amy does for herself, Iād like to think in most cases (especially as their dynamic grows) Sonic would start carrying other versions of him traits like trying to mess with her.
Heād want to get her to chase him more often and Amy would probably ask once or twice, āWhatās going on and why are you acting weird?ā Heād definitely play it off as him fooling around. Sonic doesnāt know much about romance, but he does know what Amy likes. Maybe heād ask her out or go on a bunch of traveling missions. Anything to get her to pay attention to him again. After all, thereās been examples of the guy feeling ignored by her in and out of canon. Itās possible.
-Thereās also a consistent detail where Sonicās finally ready to open up but has to deal with Amy doing her own thing. Or when heās face with different variants of her, heās flirtatious with them. For the fastest thing alive, he has terrible timing when it comes to making his mind up.
Conclusion
Welp, there you have it, darlings. Examples of Sonic crushing on Amy more than some would think. Itās a Sonic character analysis and Sonamy post all in one. I know thereās more, but I think this gathers examples from the actual content.
I made this 2 years ago and STILL cannot believe how much attention it got. Hopefully, I'll be able to add a new version to the mix once a certain movie releases next year. š
Just discovered your blog, and as someone who is passionate about Amy and SonAmy, you *really* hit the nail on the head regarding her character and the ship's dynamic! Out of curiosity, though, how do you feel about Amy's characterization in recent media? I personally feel that Amy has been toned down too much or, even worse, has been made into the opposite of her established character; being a calm and quiet girl who acts as the "responsible one" to the others and expresses little to no romantic affection for Sonic. Sure, IDW and TMOSTH has Amy the way she was in the past, but those are the only exceptions whereas all other recent media (especially Frontiers and CrossWorlds) goes full-force into making Amy into something she's not. Or maybe I'm being too harsh, just as people were overly harsh with Amy's character in the 2000s? In any case, I'd like to hear your insight if you're okay with sharing.
Welcome! Thank you so much for the ask!
I'm always in the middle when it comes to these conversations. I don't think Amy's changed as much as people say she has, but I do understand where people are coming from with their criticisms. After a short time of knowing these characters and not growing up with them, I don't exactly have a bias. I do think Amy (and all the Sonic characters in general) could be more cartoony nowadays. As in the energy and spunk they used to have. Even the best writing nowadays has that style toned down. Sonic shouldn't have his edges straightened out this much. Luckily they've been improving though.
I don't think Amyās lost her love for Sonic as much as she has more to do and isn't as cartoony as she could be. Then againā¦I mean, she's flirted with Sonic in Crossworlds with the āGot your attention, Sonic,ā line. And she even hugs Sonic at the end of Frontiers. So, her love isn't erased. It's just not done as often as it used to. I still see Amy as the same character but that's just me.
There's also more content weāve gotten between her and Sonic (which has been a lot) that overpowers my own criticisms becauseā¦Iām still happy whenever they interact. Especially since they hug more often than not with Sonic reciprocating which makes me sooooooo happy.
Unfortunately, I'd have to say I don't fully agree or disagree. Sorry if that's kind of an unsatisfying answer.
For the record, I won't judge your criticisms in any way. Your opinion is valid. Remember that. And I'm sorry if the content hasn't been your cup of tea lately. I understand the feeling all too well in terms of other fandoms that I've been a part of.
I recommend (if you haven't already) reading this Amy post to get my full opinions on her characterization.
Unofficial title, āWhy Reboot Archie Sonic And Amy Are Basically Dating.ā
If this panel doesnāt convince you, then hopefully you'll stick around a little longer.
ā¦Hmmā¦still here, huh? Alright then, grab a snack and get comfortable because I love ranting about these two, and this post is long.
Disclaimer: Iām absolutely fine with anyone disagreeing. This is just my opinion and explanation as to why I have it. I'd like you to get where Iām coming from and boy I'm definitely excited to share my thoughts because itās a doozy. Also, spoilers to those who havenāt read this comic in case anyone cared.
So, Iāve been reading over the Reboot Archie comics. First of allā¦I NEVER thought Iād be making this post. Honestly, I didnāt think much of this version of the ship besides a few cute panels that I saw floating around occasionally, or watching a few dubs.
Secondly, this comic might be my all-time favorite in Sonic history but never mind that. I love Sonamy and I mean I REALLY love it. Itās my favorite ship in all of fiction to be honest. It's unique, changes throughout the years, and the dynamic can have so much range. Thatās what Iām talking about today. Reboot Archie Sonamy works within such a strange but accurate way to how I personally view the ship and I just need to ramble about them for a bit. Forgive me when I get off topic. I really want to get my point across as clearly as possible. Read at your own pace.
Thirdly, before anything else, Iād like to talk about the characterization of the hedgies. We canāt fully understand this version of the ship, without understanding what characterization weāre dealing with. Itās the most important point of this dynamic in my opinion. Not to mention gives you a chance to understand what I like about them as individuals. Letās get started!
Characterization
Sonic The Hedgehog
The characterization here might be the best characterization I've seen so far.
This variation of Sonic is the embodiment of kindness, quick wit, wisdom, and courage, which we typically expect from him. The difference is that his standout moments of character progression really stand out. For example, despite not knowing Coral, the orange octopus, Sonic goes out of his way to stand up for her in front of the stuck-up jerk King and Queen of her kingdom. This willingness to support others, paired with moments of playfulness, a touch of anger, and even a hint of egotism adds a refreshing edge to his character that has been somewhat missing these days.
An important thing to recognize about Reboot Archie Sonic is his undeniably stubborn nature, which seems to be a consistent trait throughout his various portrayals over the years.
Exhibit A: In parts of this comic, Sonic is keeping a secret. Itās almost comical how many times he insists heās āfineā throughout the various issues.
The foreshadowing around the Werehog was brilliantly executed, with a masterful build-up from issue 254 to 265. Imagine that quick moment when he saves Amy in Unleashed, amplify it to the maximum, and you'll have this. The character struggles with asking for help and surprisingly resorts to lying about his health (something Sonic almost never does canonically). His stubbornness is so evident that Amy and the others call him out on it in one panel, all because he thought he had āeverything under control.ā Eventually, he lowers his defenses and apologizes once heās caught. Character development for Sonic isnāt common, but in this reboot, it feels entirely natural.
Side Note: These particular lines from Amy not only increase my love for her writing but also highlight how both she and Sally can pull Sonic back into reality when heās lost in his corrupted mindset. I appreciate the bond these characters share. Even though this is an alternate universe from Archie and is wellā¦a reboot, the quality of the writing gives the impression that these characters have history. A feeling that seems somewhat lacking in newer iterations. I realize this might be a hot take, especially from someone who didnāt grow up with Sonic, but based on what Iāve read (and other elements I canāt fully cover here), I find the storytelling here moreā¦cohesive.
Back on topic, Sonic spends time adjusting to his new form with the help of a therapist/trainer named Moss, who is a sloth (a character I wish we had the chance to see more of). This experience allows Sonic to manage his anger and adds a unique layer to his personality. Itās surprising to see him face this kind of struggle. I couldn't imagine this happening in the games. I have mad respect for how the comics depict his journey, as it introduces fresh elements to the status quo. In this comic, Sonic demonstrates a greater emotional awareness and often relies on others for support in various issues, which genuinely brings a smile to my face. Sonic doesn't have to go through character arcs but this is a different continuity and it's written well, so I don't mind.
Despite the restrictions in Reboot Archie, it still offers more freedom compared to IDW. Sonic isn't typically overly emotional, but it does seem that his characterization trends more towards the games as the story progresses. Reboot Archie Sonic strikes a balance between his typical comicbook personality and his game persona, making him unique. Lastly, there's an element in this characterization that strengthens the Sonamy dynamic in these comics, but Iāll save that point for later.
Amy Rose
Ooooh, my girl is so good in this comic. I'll say with complete confidence, this is probably the best portrayal of Amy in any media. Not only in comics but in GENERAL. She's energetic, empathetic, compassionate, sassy, adorable, and hotheaded. But she's also a leader, responsible, and tough.
She's everything great about her old depiction and current depiction. I know many have stated their disappointment with her not being as cartoony as she could be but Reboot Archie Amy has zero problems with that. She's very caring towards her friends but doesn't mind calling them out when she thinks they're wrong. Much like Sonic, she's very strict about wanting fairness but that's not all. Later in the comics, in the underwater City of Meropis Sonic, Amy, and Rotor meet Coral, and with encouragement from her and Tikal ( yes sheās in these comics) Coralās able to save everyone in her Kingdom. Iāll just show this moment of Amy relating to her.
Itās so sweet. Amyās also a powerhouse and even learns to use the Mystic Melody which is a technique that locates magical forces of Sonic's world. When using it, Amyās able to help her friends find the Chaos Emeralds in issue 164, and Knuckles to find pieces of the Master Emerald in a different issue that doesn't follow the main story but is still a part of it. Anyway, Amy not only helps Knuckles find the shards but also helps him emotionally. While everyone else questions him about why he's so fixated on doing one task all his life (that causes him to doubt himself), Amy says this:
I love this comic so much for this moment alone! During a time when her personality was still being questioned, this version of her shows that she is (and always has been) more than a āSonic fangirl.ā I know so many people bring up Boom or IDW when it comes to her characterization but in my opinion, nothing holds a candle to her having the same characterization as Unleashed, SA1, and SA2, and building off of it as Reboot Archie did. It basically took the best parts of her personality and amplifies it. Of course, she's getting back to her bubbly side, and I think she's still written well currently, but this comic did it before either Boom or IDW came out, and this should get just as much praise.
Amy displays how, even when everyone questions or doubts you (like in the case of Coral and Knuckles) you should always believe in yourself. Don't worry about everyone else because they're not you. Their praise shouldn't define you, you define yourself along with the choices you make. Of course, Amy has her hick-ups and isn't perfect, but the best parts of her attributes (and the parts she showed more often back then) are in this comic.
Also sheās hilarious. Look at these.
Side Note: I love the idea of Amy having magic powers but not by birth but by sheer passion and determination in terms of learning the Mystic Melody. She's SO COOL!
Sonic AND Amy
How does this dynamic differ from canon? Itās less about them being different and more about how their interactions are executed. That and the comics have the same headwriter, so I guess their dynamic here leaked into IDW in a way.
Canon Sonamyās dynamic is subtle, almost quiet. Amy and Sonic are constantly in their own little worlds at times. Amy follows Sonic and he lets her, but she still has her own path too. They are very similar to each other more than most would expect, but their energies differ. Amy approaches problems slowly and personally while Sonic is more direct and quick about fixing probles. You'll get them casually hanging out with one another, or subtly check in on each other every once in a while. You'll see Amy hugging Sonic excitedly while he calmly accepts it. Their the couple you'd have to double-check and make sure they aren't just frineds.
Reboot Archie Sonamy are almost always on the same wavelength because of the enthusiasm they have and the stakes of their world remaining high. Their dynamic, while still subtle, is more in your face. The humorous side of Sonamy, being prominent in the past, is what drives their dynamic in the comics. Sonicās ego balances out Amy's aggression whenever they're in battle. Sonic teases Amy whenever she is overstimulated while Amy not only humbles him but even sometimes joins in on his taunting. They're the loud couple that orders every food off the menu and argue about who's paying more for the other. But then try to play it cool when people start staring at them weirdly.
I love both versions of course but I guess because Reboot Archie strikes a balance between energy and subtlety that catches my attention. They are a chaotic duo with no limits. Itās when you take everything great about their dynamic from any piece of official media, put it in a blender, but then forget to turn the blender off. They complement each other, poke fun at one another, show affection, andā¦flirt? Yeah, they actually flirt in this comic. How did it go unnoticed back then? I have no clue.
The extra part of Sonicās characterization I was talking about earlier is his Casanova side. The way he outright calls out Amy for her flirting with him, while also giving her soft looks is hypocrisy at its finest likeā¦how else can you explain whatever is happening here?
And thatās the other thing with this continuity. If you thought the ship was obvious nowadays, they were downright dating already in these issues. Likeā¦tell me why BOTH characters get jealous in this comic.
See Sonic and Amyās body language and expressions? Also, I love how the name card calls Amy āthe jealous type.ā It's perfect and also a piece of comedy that stayed funny in these issues.
I enjoy seeing them bicker but not only that, they run off each otherās brainlessness perfectly. In most media, Sonic and Amyās dynamic runs off of one hedgehog acting goofy while the other acts as the grounded one. This version has BOTH. Theyāre the definition of sharing the same brain cell. These two don't feel like best frineds getting closer because they're already close. See how much worry but notable faith Sonic has in Amy here?
The line on the left is also a reference to one of Sonicās lines talking about Amy from SA2. The writing here is immaculate and no one can change my mind.
Iāve seen plenty say the main appeal of this ship is the chase. Here, it feels like both are running together due to being separated for so long. Which is probably why Sonic acted apprehensive about her leaving with Knuckles in this panel. Because he hadn't already seen her in so long. Before I read this comic, I didn't even think about any serious implications of this moment. It's a bit heartbreaking when you think about it. Even if it was written deliberately for laughs. Another reason I find this character writing engaging. The levels of layers on a tiny moment like this, showing Sonicās vulnerability gives weight to a funny moment like this.
I doubt there was as much verbal banter between them in other offical content in the past. It doesnāt feel forced either despite it not being their specific dynamic. Even now, they don't have as much of that spunkiness in comparison. The hedgehogs always had a unique back-and-forth that doesn't require banter like a typical romantic couple, but the way they do it in Reboot Archie somehow fits like a glove. You can just feel them saving every moment they have when sharing a panel. You can feel their appreciation for one another even when itās not being said out loud.
Why They Work Perfectly
Even with the same amount of ambiguity that Sonamy has ALWAYS been known for, this continuity feels as if theyāre not being held back as much. As in, theyāre about as blatant as Boom!Sonamy in some instances. But what makes me love this more is that Sonic and Amy can cover each other's weak spots, express themselves more openly, and feel however they want. Without making it unnatural too. With bad writing, this would not work.
The fact that this is a version of Sonamy that has (in my opinion) Amy able to comfort Sonic for once is crazy to me. The fact that Amy was able to give Sonic a pep talk made me fall in love with this version the most. Itās something we havenāt had in canon. At least not to the extent in my opinion.
Sonicās also more openly affectionate around her in this comic. I believe the main reason heās more open to her nowadays is because of this continuity. Either that, or Sonicās allowed to be more affectionate in general. Either way, I appreciate the blatantness of Sonamy in the Reboot and am glad weāre getting more glimpses of that old flair these days. Itās not as much as Iād like, but Iām satisfied regardless.
Reboot!Archie Sonamy just shows off their dynamic with barely any limits. I feel like Iām getting more out of these two without the story having to focus on their dynamic specifically. I might just be pleased to see an older interpretation of their relationship before the 2020s that's less ambiguous but I digress. Their relationship isnāt the only good thing about this comic, but I canāt act like itās not a huge reason I love it as much as I do.
Conclusion
Maybe the shipping fuel is unintentional but it doesnāt seem that way. The writing of their dynamic (like always) feels tooā¦obvious for lack of a better term.
Yeah, I LOVE this comic! I wanted to shed more light on this version of Sonamy since it hasnāt gotten the attention I believe it deserves. I recommend everyone to read this comic when they can. You guys WONāT be disappointed.
The way I can best describe this version of Sonamy is balanced or even complete in a way. Despite the comic unfortunately getting discontinued, Sonic and Amyās relationship feels like itās hit its peak with great characterization, development, chemistry, and everything else I love about the ship in a perfect mix. Hope I was able to convince you this time. If not, then I hope you at least caught on to why this version of Sonamy means a lot to me.
Iām adding this because I have the pictures for it but couldnāt include it unfortunately. Even in the classic issues while Sonic still saves her, he somehow had faith in her abilities despite not knowing her very well yet. Here are a few panels of this. They were quite literally made for each other.
I'll also add a few panels of Sonic and Amy sharing the same brain cell too. :3
I enjoyed reading this comic. Couldnāt you tell?
For example, despite not knowing Coral, the orange octopus, Sonic goes out of his way to stand up for her in front of the stuck-up jerks King and Queen of her kingdom.
Amy approaches problems slowly and personally while Sonic is more direct and quick about fixing problems. You'll get them casually hanging out with one another, or subtly check in on each other every once in a while. You'll see Amy hugging Sonic excitedly while he calmly accepts it. Theyāre the couple you'd have to double-check and make sure they aren't just frineds.
The way he outright calls out Amy for her flirting with him, while also giving her soft looks is hypocrisy at its finest. Likeā¦how else can you explain whatever is happening here?
Just dropping in to say Merry Christmas to all you awesome sauce people :D Hope you all have an amazing chrimus and wishing yāall the absolute best in 2026 š«¶
So, I noticed you watched Zootopia 2. So did I and I LOVED it! What was your favorite part?
Oh gosh. The whole thing was incredible. To be 100% honest, I think I liked it even more than the first one!!Ā
I loved Zootopia soooo much as a film. So for this one to top even that was like, holy cow. Gonna brain dump a lot of thoughts below, you're getting way more than you asked for lol so be ready :D
SPOILERS AHEAD. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.
I avoided all the later trailers, so I was totally surprised by all the twists, including the Lynxleys being evil and everything. It was delightful :D I looooved the storytelling. The mystery was fantastic. The humor was on point. The soundtrack. The new song Zoo!!!! It's way better than the first movie's song, fight me :D
I loved the reptile world building. And I love Gary SO MUCH and wanna give him a hug and hang out with him and have him tell me all about the Volt Viper comic book hero heās into. āWe will succeed.ā Best mantra ever. Also āthe world was never meant to be on one personās shoulders.ā BOOM. This slithery little guy is just full of wisdom and perspective and is just a sweet little dear who is SO kind can I just take him home with me please
I loved how this story was completely grounded in the world it was set in. Like, this exact story couldnāt happen anywhere else except in the world of Zootopia, just like the first film. The entire creative team perfectly used Zootopiaās world building and expanded on it effectively to tell a unique story that couldnāt be told in any other way.Ā
THE ANGST. UGH it was the BEST.
AND NICK AND JUDY. Oh my golly, Nick and Judy. They are so wonderful. I love them. Their relationship progressed in the perfect way.
I do ship them, but like, in the slooooooowest of slow burns possible. And they both have to be completely oblivious for like 99% of that time. And thatās what this movie was doing. It meaningfully and beautifully deepened their friendship and got them to the exact perfect point that made sense for where they are in life and UGH it was so good! (side note, it was hilarious how they made fun of the fan theories about them having a weird bunny fox hybrid kid lolll)Ā
I found it so interesting to watch both Nick and Judy trying to solve the same problem (potentially being separated) in completely different ways due to their personalities and personal trauma. I love that kind of stuff. And them starting to heal by admitting their problems out loud to each other alsdjfljadslkfjlkdjflkad they make me feel so many feelinggggggggggggs
And of course, the hug. THE HUG GUYS. *melts into a puddle* IT WAS PERFECT. I CANāT. WATCHING THE GIF ON REPEAT. NEED I SAY MORE.
If anything, that was my favorite part. :)
One last thought to wrap up: Iāve honestly been really disappointed with Disney in recent years. So imagine my surprise and delight when I saw THIS film and it was FANTASTIC. I havenāt felt this wayāso positively delighted and thrilled and filledācoming out of a Disney movie in a loooong time. It was so refreshing and wonderful. The storytelling is just.. beautifully crafted. This feels like older Disney in the very best way. This feels like when they made Tangled and the first Zootopia, except even better than Zootopia. Iām so grateful to the entire creative team that worked on this with so much obvious love and care and attention to detail. They didnāt let the higher-ups meddle (as far as I can tell); they didnāt get caught in the weeds trying to make any sort of in-your-face statementsā they just honed in on one clear theme and embraced the world and wonderful characters they had created and just told a fantastic story.
But yeah. Thatās everything I loved about this movie :)Ā
Canon Sonic meets the Villain version of himself wouldnāt end well would it?
No kidding. I couldnāt imagine how heād react. Especially because in my personal interpretation, theyāre almost interchangeable and when presented to his friends, theyād almost not be able to notice. Hope this brings upon an interesting conversation because this is so much fun to think about.
You probably like collecting plushies especially if they're merch of your favourite characters
Collecting plushies? Honestly, I only have a few and none of them are merch from my fave characters. I don't even have many of their shirts. All my plushies are from when I was a kid and are just random to be honest. š
about your villain sonic take I think the main reason why sonic is holding back to becoming a "I can do whatever I want" type of villain is that he still cares
people forgot that sonic isn't a "hero", the reason that the thing he does is because he just feels it's the right thing to do (to him)
like the reason he still fights eggman because he finds the trill of it
idk what he went through at a young age (and tbh sega will have no intention and never will be giving sonic a backstory) but the characters are extremely lucky that sonic didn't learn the wrong lesson through is early life
do you think sonic would become one when he finally "snaps" like he finally just stopped caring??
idk this just makes sonic an interesting character
This question refers to this post, in case anyoneās wondering.
I donāt really think people forget that Sonic āisn't a heroā, but just simply sees him as one. That's how I see him tbh. I do respect your perspective and understand where youāre coming from though.
I agree that Sonic could have ended up in a bad place if he hadnāt learned the right lessons from his lifestyle. He's a pretty simple character who, when pushed too far, could have some pretty disastrous outcomes depending on whoās writing him and what situation causes him to snap. The term āsnapā itself is pretty broad. It could mean emotionally, mentally, or in some other way. Maybe he just reaches a breaking point, tired of carrying the weight of the world even though he doesnāt have to.
Sonicās so fascinating because heās open to so many different interpretations, and the word āsnapā can mean pretty much anything depending on how you look at it. I find analyzing Sonic really fun, I swear.
