i tried for like twenty minutes to find that questionnaire with the street tree thats like “i want to protect it. i want to watch it grow strong” but i couldnt so just imagine it here

okay but the thing about shadowhunters isn’t that we think it’s The Best Show On Television, but the fact that it’s bad. it’s truly, honestly, undeniably bad. the acting goes from good to terrible, the cinematography is mediocre, the dialogue is Awful, the special effects are cringe-worthy. 

but, though the show is objectively Bad Television, it still is The Best “fictional oppression as a metaphor of racial oppression” i’ve seen on genre tv, has the only bisexual asian man on television right now as one of its leading figures, had one of the best homophobia/coming out arcs i’ve seen, cast actors of color in a multitude of roles that were originally white, has vastly improved from the (shitty) source material, and is generally written with a lot of love and care for its fanbase.

so, yeah, the show is Bad. and yet, despite being done with five dollars, a rubber-band and a chewed piece of bubblegum, it manages to be better racial and lgb representation than most other things on television right now.

so, the focus of this argument is not that shadowhunters is The Best And Most Revolutionary Show. the focus is that shadowhunters is a turning point in representation in TV because, if a silly YA genre dramedy done with two cents and a candy wrapper can do it, how come shows produced by HBO can’t?
