not just because of the “protect trans kids” thing in her room btw. there’s a few other moments like that as well. apparently the dad has a trans badge, i didn’t even see that part and i still caught the subtext.

but also, that shot you probably saw on twitter, where the trans colors are everywhere and the trans flag colors overlays in her hair?

yeah that’s deliberate. i was skeptical but i’m convinced now. there’s no other shot like that in the movie. there’s no other time her hair is overlaid in an multicolored gradient like that. this movie plays with color a lot, but in every other shot, her hair looks normal and is just one color (plus the tips). this was very obviously deliberate as a shot to STAND OUT and display those colors. the dialogue in the moment is about her feeling like she has to hide who she is.

that’s beyond coding. that’s done with purpose. that’s done to be as obvious as they could get away with.

Into The Spiderverse took 100% of its critically acclaimed visuals from comic books and street art and while there are obvious in-universe reasons for this it can’t be ignored that BOTH of these are traditionally seen as “lowbrow” populist art forms, here celebrated for their inherent beauty, complexity and sociopolitical importance. In this essay I will-

Not a full essay but lemmie tell you. Spoilers below.

Why does Miles stop at a time-sensitive moment to paint one of Peter’s suits when he’d probably want to get going as quickly as possible? Three reasons.

One, on a character level Miles is about to go into the scariest endgame fight he’s been in the entire movie. Taking the time to make the costume his own, to take this little part of the old Spiderman’s legacy and probably get some encouraging words from Aunt May is important to pysch himself up enough to do this.

Two, suiting up for the first time is an important rite of passage in superhero comics. It represents the character deliberately taking on the role. Miles has been wearing a kid’s costume because he feels like a kid trying to take on the role of a hero. By putting on a real costume, his own costume that he designed, he is becoming his own hero.

Three, his costume is an extension of his art. He uses spray paint to alter it, and we see little drips and splatters in the costume’s design. Miles is a street artist and his spider-suit is a street artists’s creation. 

Miles’s street art and his coming into his own as Spiderman are directly linked in the narrative in a way that’s too perfect to be accidental. His costume is made with spray paint. He’s bitten while painting a mural. He uses his spider-powers to put a sticker where his dad can’t find it. Jefferson doesn’t like Spiderman’s methods or Miles’s art. But in the end, he’s willing to work with both. And street art is the shared history Aaron, Jefferson and Miles all have even if they ended up on three drastically different paths.

Miles paints murals, throws stickers up on street signs, etc, both as self-expression and an expression of love for his city. It’s that same love for his home that makes him Spiderman, the city’s protector. His vigilante heroism and his illegal art are expressions of exact same thing.

And comics! This movie loves the language of comics! 

It loves the humor in seeing the words float in the air around the characters! It loves stylized human figures and kirby dots and dynamic transitions! It loves the way comics tell stories (note that every time a characters is narrating their backstory in Into The Spiderverse it switches to comic format, doing highly comic-specific things like having three characters telling their stories side by side.)

Miles reads Spiderman comics in-universe and they’re what helps him understand what’s happening. How many people who worked on this movie do you think read a comic at a formative age and saw themselves in it, in some way?

Of course, if I’m going to talk about the “language” of comics or the “language” of street art I can’t ignore the fact that these two art forms have influenced each other immensely over the years, joyfully borrowing from each other at every opportunity.

Of course the public was anti-Steve, especially after IW. He hid from the consequences of his actions until a big enough threat emerged that he could blackmail world leaders into overlooking his crimes.* Then he took the entire fight of the grid so that only he and his personally trusted allies could fight it and lost.** He's more than burned any capital 70 year okd propaganda and a bit part in the prior invasion earned him.

*Everyone was all, "Steve called Tony Earth's best defender!!!!" but the actual context of that was damn creepy. He was basically saying, "The strongest hero you have is gone, and I have no compunctions against injuring other potential defenders to get unquestioned command, so you better suck it up and call me the hero." Just like Natasha at the end of CA:WS, the message is : If you wanna live, don't hold supers accountable.

**He could have just as easily surrendered to Rhodes who would have pulled out a "planetary emergency" clause to justify working with him and still called in any other enhanced the Council is aware of worldwide, not to mention potentially the entire planet's air forces and special forces. Instead he enacted his plan from AoU : fight together and die like noble shieldbrothers.

I was going to respond to this, but you basically took the words right out of my mouth. Steve declared his right to play the hero as above the world's requests for accountability. He invaded countries when they asked him to stop and basically used a might makes right mentality to justify his actions. He believes himself to be morally and physically superior and that means he doesn't have to abide by laws. That means he can start firefights in public with innocents around. That means he can police the world and noone can ask him to follow their countries laws or not enter their territory without permission.

Civil war wasn't Team Cap vs. Team Ironman. It was Team Cap vs. The world. They probably didn't appreciate being told their concerns didn't matter and their boundaries would be violated at his will. So yeah, no real mourning for the self-declared benevolent dictator who had no problem wreaking havoc, but strangely dissappered whenever real clean up or rebuilding was needed.

Apparently there is some talk going around that RDJ might make a comeback as Tony Stark to the MCU. To be frank here, I really hope he doesn't.

My blog has always and will forever be a Tony blog even if I have other fandom content. I love Tony so much that I don't think I'll ever get over his death in Endgame nor will I ever forgive how much the MCU used him as a scapegoat because he deserved so much better than that.

And realistically speaking here, it's the MCU. They are not going to bring back Tony for anything good, they'll most likely use him as more cannon fodder for whatever fucked up plot they have that conveniently needs someone to blame.

'Far From Home' did exactly that, having an array of supposed "victims" that Tony somehow wronged work together and be villains. 'What If...?' killed Tony off in the two or three episodes he appeared in. Things he worked for have either been scrapped or made void (SPOILER: The Sokovian Accords have been repealed).

Side note: In regards to the last bit, whatever reason was given means shit to me because I find it hard to believe that it was done for any other purpose than to simply avoid having to work through it and just toss it aside like every other plot/plothole. A new low for lazy writing, in my opinion but whatever keeps their hands clean of accountability I guess.

I find it very hard to believe that Tony will be used in a way where he'll get an ending he deserves or a plot line where he can actually catch a break for five minutes. I really hope I'm wrong and that he's given some justice in terms of all the shit he has been through but I doubt it. No character is truly safe.

Getting to see RDJ as Tony again will undeniably fill my heart with happiness and I can't say the the prospect of it all doesnt have me bouncing with joy. But at the expense of using him to justify whatever fucked up shit they have in store or to just kill him off again, I'd rather they not.

Tony deserves better than that.

Peter Parker who, in spite of his internship, still manages to find some time to be J. Jonah Jameson’s Best Damn Photographer On Staff, and so he gets dragged by JJJ to the mayor’s charity banquet to take pictures for the bugle, but this also happens to be like the first time in years Tony Stark got bored enough to grace an event he’s not personally throwing with his presence, and he’s definitely not expecting to see his teenage intern who should definitely Be In Bed Right Now As It’s A School Night, and yet, here he is, being forced by said teenager to pose for press pictures with the mayor, the mayor who is confused as all hell as to why Tony Stark and some random photographer spend the whole night staring at each other like

JJJ realizes he has Stand-In Dad™ Competition and uses the Bugle to launch a smear campaign on Iron Man. He digs up the most ridiculous and fabricated dirt possible, but his big damning evidence against Stark, that is mentioned in nearly every article, is that Stark clearly is in cahoots with that menace Spider-Man! They’re OBVIOUSLY plotting something! With their hundreds of criminal offenses between them New Yorkers should spend every waking moment in fear!

Peter finds this absolutely hilarious and contributes to the cause by giving Jameson the most ridiculous pictures of Tony he can get- Tony falling asleep in his lab (‘hazard to public safety!’), Tony in the middle of sneezing while biting into a huge cheeseburger, Tony in a frilly apron holding the charred remains of what was supposed to be a cake (‘he expects us to believe he builds all his own technology when he can’t complete the simplest of tasks!’), and a picture of Iron Man and Spider-Man in the middle of a secret handshake, which makes the front page as proof they’re working together

Tony starts making a big show of showing up at the Bugle office randomly to pick Peter up from work and goes out of his way to autograph any stray papers laying around

every time Peter gets made at Tony he goess to JJJ and is like ‘Mr. Stark just confessed to me that his father faked all of his iq test scores and he’s not a genius after all’
