I think the secret sauce of life that's difficult to come to honestly as an autistic person is that the unfairness of life means that sometimes you just have to lie to protect yourself, and you can't get around that - either you protect yourself or you tell the truth, period.

For example, you have someone in a position of authority over you who does a shit job that directly affects the work you're going to have to do in the future. You express exasperation at the situation. Later, they call that disrespectful and insist you don't do it again, and express no curiosity about your feelings in that situation. There's only one correct way forward: you say "you're right, I'm sorry" and you make a mental note never to trust them to assist you properly again, and you also make a mental note adjusting the expectations of yourself in the office culture even if you've witnessed different expectations for others. You also make a mental note to stop adjusting to the average behavior in the office and to instead lean back on your all-business worksona. Anything else is going to "rock the boat".

And it's the same for people in your personal life who have decided the standards for them and the standards for you are different, and they express no curiosity about how their behavior affects you in turn. It doesn't matter why, it doesn't matter if it makes sense to you or not. It really, truly doesn't. You just have to say "you're right, I'm sorry" and then redirect your energy and time elsewhere. And if they come back someday and start treating you the way you were treating them, you don't match energy right away. You maybe give them the extra you have left after fully taking care of yourself and the people who have still expressed some level of concern about your feelings the whole time, maybe. If you happen to have some left over to scatter at the outskirts.
