Khura’in Appreciation Post
One thing I realized what I like about Khura'in so much (enough that my name on the main server is Khura'inoboo Jute) is that it’s kind of like Shangri-La, except with a realistic amount of political trouble that gives it depth and gets me invested
If you don’t know about Shangri-La it’s kinda like a legendary Himalayan Utopia, even said to be in a roughly similar location, in the western Himalayas.
This makes Khura’in a “troubled utopia” which in my opinion is a very interesting concept to explore and makes for a fantastic setting.
But Khura'in has many other such dichotomies that let it break free from stereotypes and cliches!
it’s very traditional, but that doesn’t mean it has no modern technology – TVs are widely known, sound systems, phones, cameras, modern rifles all exist
it’s deeply religious – yet science and modern scientific methods are also accepted. While Rayfa is skeptical, Nahyuta employs them and the country has an amazing forensics department (think of how fast they get autopsy reports there!)
it keeps to itself and is secluded – but is also very worldly. It has a history of spirit channeling diplomacy with the surrounding countries, and in modern times its strong legal culture has led to its prosecutors traveling around the world who immerse themselves in local custom
it values its own customs deeply, but doesn’t let itself be bound by them when it is unreasonable or becomes unsustainable. This isn’t just evidenced by the whole revolution thing, it also shows up much earlier when the Khura’inese judge overrules the royal princess and the much-revered Dance of Devotion, demanding facts.
