Shinichi has to act younger than he is as Conan. Kaito has to act older than he is as Kaitou Kid,

so it makes a lot of sense why Ran and Aoko appeal to them immensely on top of the numerous other reasons these boys are in love with their childhood friends. 

For all that Gosho has made the two couples look alike (since Shinichi and Ran are in a way an iteration of Kaito and Aoko from his earlier work on Magic Kaito), he keeps things different enough that you can enjoy both ships uniquely.

Ran is often thought to be mature for her age. She fits the gentle and mothering archetype quite well. Even characters older than her, namely Ai, has seen a resemblance of their older sister figures in her. I definitely agree with some fics that Shinichi’s primary attachment is Ran. At four years old he was already drawn to her so quickly. 

In contrast, Aoko’s childishness is repeatedly emphasized, from her way of talking to other people’s comments about her, namely Akako. Akako makes a point to differentiate the both of them by emphasizing to Kaito how mature and adult-like she is, while wondering why Kaito keeps bothering with someone as immature as Aoko. 

But that’s the thing, I think that’s one of the things about Aoko which comforts Kaito. He has to play at being the dreamy, older gentleman thief half the time, and while there’s no doubt he enjoys it, I’m sure it also gets tiring being the object of affection (and you know, target by some shady men in black) of countless people who only see Kid. Meanwhile, Aoko cares not a whit for Kid but cares so much for Kaito. With Aoko, he can just play around like in the past without the weight of having to keep up a persona. 

In addition, while Kaito and Heiji can appreciate a cute face apart from that of their love interests, Shinichi is…there’s no other word for it, he’s Ran-sexual. Ok, joking aside, I think it’s partly true? I mean in situations where Kaito or Heiji would blush even if it isn’t with their love interests (like with Akako or Momiji respectively), Shinichi…doesn’t? Or hardly does at least. 

I remember the Bird’s Eye View Restaurant case, aka where Shinichi nearly seduced an older woman and Takagi was panicking about how to intervene, he does all that without any fluster or a hint of a blush. Even when he and his classmates were talking about the ‘hot, foreign teacher’ (Jodie-sensei), the anime did make him sound eager, but upon rereading the manga there wasn’t even a blush, and his expression was more like curious. In other words, Ran has had Shinichi wrapped around her tiny little pinky since age four.

I’m sure there have been instances but so far, besides anything related to Ran, the only times I saw him have a blush was on the cover where Sato was wearing her omiai kimono, and some times when other couples have moments (like when Sonoko held Makoto’s hands or with some Heizuha moments). I probably just haven’t seen some of the others, but honestly the two above are pretty cute by themselves. 

Even when Kaito and Aoko act similarly to Heiji and Kazuha, there are some differences there too. Like in Heizuha’s case, Kazuha was the one who knew early on that she was in love with Heiji, while in KaiAo’s case, if the recent relationship chart is to be believed, Kaito ‘loves everything about Aoko’ but Aoko isn’t sure about her feelings for Kaito (which again makes sense considering her innocent persona). 

And again, this is mildly hilarious to me, that Kaitou Kid, practically everyone’s dream boy, beloved by millions…has a pretty crappy love life, and he has no one to blame but himself. Because teasing the girl you like by calling her flat-chested doesn’t exactly scream romance. 

No wonder Aoko can’t see Kaito liking her (that has a lot of angst potential, but let’s keep things lighthearted for now). I guess I fell in love with KaiAo so fast because of the hilarious irony of how Kaito can charm anyone as Kaitou Kid being the smooth talker that he is, but reverts back to the mentality of a grade schooler who always puts his foot in his mouth or a frog stuck in his throat when it concerns his feelings for Aoko, and that’s not even counting the canyon of secrets between them.

I would like to add more shinran/kaiao parallels + contrasts here because I’m very addicted to these sorts of things, especially with these four characters and relationships

When Ran first figured out Shinichi’s identity, she was very aggressive and direct in her approach to uncover his identity, trying to outsmart him at every turn until Shinichi finds a way to convince her that Conan and Shinichi are different people. It becomes less assertive after a few changing tactics until she becomes more “convinced” that Conan isn’t Shinichi. (it’s interesting to note on how Ran develops with the suspicion arc though I think this could call for a separate analysis). I’m honestly surprised that she was still able to be very insistent with it after the fiasco in Desperate Revival. But it brings to my point that early-mid Ran would jump at a suspicion and would constantly pursue it until she has physical proof shown to have her off the radar.

In contrast, when the idea of Kaito being Kid was first presented to Aoko, her first instinct was to deny it and immediately create an alibi for him for evidence. She stepped out of her comfort zone and even a rejection (wanted to punch Kaito in this scene) just to prove his innocence and possibly her own conscious. When she actually met Kid for the first time and revealed his identity as Kaito, her reply wasn’t to accuse him. She created a very convenient scenario for him to follow up on, not giving him a chance to explain himself. Just like when she first heard Kaito being Kid, she immediately went to deny this and would rather believe in an alternative option (which very ironically, was the exact excuse Kaito used on Ginzo during the first suspicion case too). Even when she was presented almost undeniable evidences of Kaito as Kid, she never went to confront Kaito about this and kept her suspicions until the first opportunity comes (Sun Halo: where Kaito fakes not being injured) and she immediately takes it. It barely can count as evidence but it’s enough to satisfy her. While people say it’s naivety, I think she’s in complete denial because she doesn’t want to think of the consequences that could happen if she truly entertains her suspicion.

With Aoko, when a girl is seen wanting to pursue a romantic relationship with Kaito, she becomes very interested in why they like him and trying to support them because she prioritizes Kaito’s happiness and want what’s best for him. She’ll be openly supportive of them but silently sulk and keep her dissatisfaction within her as long as possible, which mainly stems from her low self-esteem. It also doesn’t help that in this specific instance, she admires Akako for her maturity, beauty and ability to ski, qualities she believed that Kaito likes in a woman. 

We have two instances where Ran reacts when she sees a girl Shinichi could potentially be involved with. The first time she would be very openly jealous and Ran was very hostile to the girl (and Shinichi).She demanded explanations, direct in her approach to the subject. Just like her suspicions, I think this mainly comes from the fact that she thinks Shinichi hasn’t been contacting her and when it suddenly springs up that Shinichi has a secret girlfriend, she was very (rightfully in my opinion) angry that her best friend failed to inform her of this turn of event and made her worried for ghosting her for these reasons. We then have the other episode, that I believe is a lot more similar to Aoko’s case where there’s a girl she deems superior to her and knew things about Shinichi that she didn’t, she moped and started having inferiority complexes towards the girl.

Going on early Detco, while Ran is classified as the more mature, whenever something about Shinichi pops up, whether he's appeared in cases or about his love life or even a sprinkle of update, she gets loud. Like really screaming to the top of the world that she sometimes forgets she's in a room full of people. She can't contain her emotions and will need to voice it out whenever it happens (not always screaming but it can come in a form of rambling too). When she gets worried, especially about Shinichi, she will make sure he knows she's worried and will not let him off until she's certain he'll be okay.

Aoko, despite her loud and boisterous demeanor in every day, she always feels the need to hide whenever she's worried. Whether to Ginzo or Kaito, she wishes them off and well but won't ever voice that she's actually worried for them and hides it with a smile. It comes to the point where Kaito has to decipher her emotions himself.

Rambling About Kaito/Kid's Moral Compass

So wanting to bring up about Kaito/Kaitou Kid's sense of justice that sometimes people question because of some misinterpretations we get occasionally. When you think about it, it is actually a little more nuanced and grey. Because he's a criminal, a person who works on the other side of the law and usually disregards anyone other than himself. Which yeah, he would especially when he tries to escape from them. Yet he's considered a "good" person if you were to put him on the scale. While it’s not to the point where he wouldn’t hurt someone (remember guys, the “nobody gets hurt” policy is completely fanon), he does at least have a high enough conscious that dislikes seeing someone seriously injured or worse, dead.

I would also argue that his “violence days” was during the MK gag era where such actions were more accepted and used as a more comedic relief than actual violence (like Kogoro hitting Conan). He might not be completely non-violent but if there's anything to take with modern Kaito that comes out of MK gag era, he hasn't been bonking people with wrenches and having physical assault on his record. I’m more inclined to say that with Gosho writing Kaito in Detective Conan, Kaito would probably resort to sleeping gas and questionably a stun-gun *glance at Conan and Sera* than wacking someone on the head with a wrench that could possibly give concussions. (That could possibly even kill someone)

But let's establish this first. Kaito’s actions and thoughts get determined more by his selfish whim than being an ally of justice. A lot of what he chooses to do is based on what he wants to do rather than what is a morally right choice. Fortunately, Kaito's choices just happen to align with those "good" morals so in equation, he is usually be classified as such. It does seem like he shares a very similar sense of justice as Shinichi or other detectives, where he’d rather save a life than have it stolen in front of him. We have multiple instances of this in both DC and MK, from instinctively saving a man who slipped off the ledge to being frustrated of not being able to prevent a murder in his presence. Even as early as MK chapter 5, he saved a pirate that was attempting to kill him seconds ago, even going as far to say “If I’m going to die either way, I’d rather die trusting you than doubting you.” So even in the early gag era, it was always going to be a prominent trait that he values human life, no matter their sins.

It’s the equivalent to Shinichi’s time when he saved a serial killer; “I don't know why you would kill someone, but as for saving someone...A logical mind isn't needed, right?” While I’m sure that Shinichi’s ideology of saving lives come from growing up watching Yusaku who works closely with the police, but Kaito is different. Even if he wasn't aware of it, his parents are a pair of thieves who's morality are more skewed and grey, and he was never exposed to those extreme scenes where that type of morality needed to be put into question. So the question stands, where does Kaito’s "high" moral compass comes from? Or to put it more simply, where did his selfishness develop into being aligned from a point of happening to align with what people sees as a good act of will?

I’ve seen some say Kaito’s world view revolves around Toichi’s teachings and Aoko’s sense of justice and I couldn’t help but agree.

First on Toichi's teachings; Toichi has probably taught him and gave him advice when Kaito was able to start comprehend them so I'll give it a good 6 years at most for Toichi to instill his idealisms and beliefs into this kid. But no matter how good of a guy Toichi seems, his morality is already questionable from the fact that he's an international thief (that willingly chose it). But it wouldn't be farfetched if he at least taught Kaito some basic human etiquette that started it alongside his magic techniques. It's all speculations though at the end of the day because the only canon content (manga) we see with Toichi's teachings is the ones applicable to his career as a stage magician (and phantom thief).

So I think what influences him more, especially being a more present presence is his life is the Nakamori family. He’s childhood friends with the daughter of a police officer who she looks up to and supports. Ginzo is a respected officer in the force that not only got promoted to inspector, but also was able to be transferred to the MPD. And more importantly, he formerly worked in Division 1, which is the homicide division. He has transferred to Division 2 for Kid but has worked in Division 1 a good amount of time. Being in that division tells me he has a good sense of duty to want to bring criminals to justice from their wrongdoings, from murderers that shouldn’t have stolen what shouldn’t be touched. It’s probably what shapes Aoko’s view of right and wrong. He does value human life, it may not be viewed as strongly as say Shinichi or Kogoro but it’s there, it exists.

The only evidence we have so far on this is when he defends Kid, saying he will never steal a human life.

But judging his expression here, you can tell this is a man who has experience with loss of life and treasures it. This is a guy who has worked in a first division and thus can trust Megure to solve this murder case that is wrongfully pinned on by Kid. Maybe that’s also partially the reason why Nakamori transferred to Division 2. He might have gotten tired of seeing the piles of sins humans keep committing. Maybe an incident that involved a loss of life that caused him to pursue a criminal that doesn’t steal the biggest taboo. All of it is speculation at this point but with little we have with that doesn’t involve Nakamori directly with Kid, it’s few. At least even within Kid cases, there is something to be found with Nakamori’s moral stance and how it influences others.

Which brings me back to the case of Aoko. Despite Nakamori Ginzo not being an active part of her life, she still looks up to this guy. She still maintains a very strong sense of morals. She constantly roots for the police, which is what her dad is a part of, and condemns criminals, thieves included, no matter how righteous they present themselves or how popular they are with the mass.

I think a lot of Ginzo’s morals is instilled into her and we can see Aoko as a sort of reflection to Ginzo’s unspoken. It could also be her admiration to her dad and his occupation and believes he’s working to dispel evil and bring them to justice. It might be seen as childish and imaginative but taking note that she’s lonely without her father’s presence, it might be a coping mechanism that lets her see her father in a better light rather than despise him for abandoning her.

It might seem that she has a very black and white view of the world but considering that she’s usually kept out of danger, barely in Kid’s heists, or *forcibly* put to sleep *glares at Kaito*, she really hasn’t much of an opportunity to have her perspective change. It’s why she hates the thief, for working in the other side of the law. There are of course more personal (and valid) reasons for her despise but her sense of righteousness definitely plays a huge role in her outlook.

However, as seen in Sun Halo, it does not stop her from her human empathy that she naturally carries, even it's sometimes be a bit clouded by her ideals. She’s constantly asking about his condition even if she despises him. She treats him as a human being and worries about his well-being throughout this ordeal.

We really don’t see how she feels after this incident and it’s all up to interpretation but we can say for fact that Aoko is a very kind and empathic person. She worries about other peoples’ wellbeing so it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that she probably might be affected by this incident. (It would be very nice if Gosho can follow up on this or at least have characters remember past incidents and reflect but that’s me bashing his MK writing) But what I’m trying to prove is that alongside her view of justice, she values human life, even to individuals that she dislikes.

So what was all of this for? Well knowing how Kaito lost his father at a very young age, the only thing we narratively see that he takes to heart is the lessons Toichi instilled upon him but what we know, these advices is towards his dream as a stage magician and not himself as an individual. For the majority of his life, he hangs out with the Nakamoris, especially Aoko. He highly respects Nakamori behind all his insults and Kid mask as a law abiding respectful citizen. With how important Aoko (and Ginzo) is to his world, Kaito would be influenced by their ideals and shape his own around them which help him develop his own moral compass that is akin to them.

This would include how he sees human life. If there’s a possibility he could save someone, then he would do his darn best for that to happen, which translates more prominently in DC cases and some MK heists. He may not have the colorful lenses of justice that Aoko or Nakamori have seeing as he took the role of a criminal quite easily but he does maintain a good grasp of conscious where it affects his choice in wanting to lend a helping hand where he can or even better, save lives.

It’s partially the reason why he and Conan gets along so well and can put aside their differences if situation calls for it. It’s why Conan can trust his judgement and even trusts him to protect his most important person in the movies. Even if they work on opposite sides of the law, they share the same "idealism" and moral compass (or as close as it can get) and why there's often chances where they naturally end up working together.

However as to note even more on their similarities; they're both not against using underhanded means and questionable actions if the end results in a better outcome. "The end justifies the means", if their actions doesn't result in anything life-threatening, then anything is fair play.

To reiterate, Kaito's actions are guided by his own choices and personal whims. But because living with the Nakamoris who have a high sense of justice, it molded his own moral compass to match with them to a degree. It doesn't stop him from hurting others if he truly deems it necessary to get to his end goal. But he would try to prevent it from holding any long-lasting consequences and especially if it's life-threatening. He would not however, ever sacrifice nor play with a person's life because he understands how precious life can be and will draw a line where necessary.

If Toichi is alive, and Chikage knows it, what do you think is the reason(s) neither of them have told Kaito?

It may be part of some plan that Toichi be considered dead, and they think telling Kaito could hinder it. Could be that they know Kaito would want to get involved even more if he knew he could be working alongside his dad. Or they, for some reason, think Kaito's skilled enough at drawing attention that they can make their own plans without interferance.

Of course, that line of thought would be if they considered it at all. Maybe they just have zero intention of telling Kaito period, and hadn't reconsidered.

If nothing else, if Toichi is alive and either he's aware of Kaito's current stint or Chikage knows he's alive, Kaito should be told. If for no other reason than to let him more seriously think about whether to stop being Kid. It makes one question their parenting all the more, if they let him make dangerous decisions without all the information that might change his mind.

Guys we got our answer (or update) on this matter. Toichi and Chikage are most likely in cahoots and their parentings are one of the worst, if not the worst in the franchise. Specifically Toichi. Especially Toichi.

And he's not only letting his son out and about in gunfire from the organization, he's also the most shietty dad for making his poor son believe he's been dead for 8+ years and both parents skimped out on actual parenting, being absent parents for the bulk of his life.

Who loves his girl the most? Heiji to Kazuha, Kaito to Aoko or Shinichi to Ran?

Shinichi to Ran, no contest. Heiji's very new to even being aware of his feelings, and he's a little too hung up on images (his own and having the perfect setting kind of stuff) instead of just. He does better when acting on pure impulse, let's put it that way.

Kaito cares about Aoko, but less as 'his girl' and more just platonic. He can't really acknowledge any other feelings atm.

Ok but hear me out: I wouldn't call it only love when someone is aware of it. You can love without even noticing it.

You can see the love in the way how they are worried about each other. How Heiji wears Kazuhas charm even though he doesn't believe in such things.

In the way Kaito made a firework for Aokos Birthday when he couldn't make it to her in time.

How they handle their love is another thing but there isn't someone who "loves less" among them.

Putting my two cents here and I agree.

Even though Shinichi can express his love and care to Ran the best and most straightforward, it doesn’t invalidate Heiji’s and Kaito’s way to express them

For Heiji, even before he realized his feelings for Kazuha, he was very protective of her, to the point where he promised he wouldn’t allow her to get hurt and walk with her to death’s door. He’d take an arrow stab from Kazuha with no complaints if it means getting Kazuha to safety, Even if he doesn’t believe in superstition like her, he still always holds his charm and even hands it to Conan once because he truly believes it is a form of protection. He won’t admit it but he also believes in superstition just like Kazuha. I think they’re ultimate love language is protection, there’s so many moments where they’re willing to physically protect one another or the charm, and it might develop more if Gosho would be willing to write more of their relationship. Heiji has only just sprung out from his dense/oblivious phase after all (freaking finally confessing shenanigans are over!). But it doesn’t change the fact that he loved her before the Ebisu bridge incident, even if he couldn’t identify the type of love he held towards her.

Now contrary to beliefs, Kaito is very much aware of his own feelings towards Aoko. He knows he loves her romantically just like Shinichi does with Ran. The problem is, Kaito is very bad with his words (and immature). His first reaction to romantic situations is denial and tease because that’s the dynamic he’s comfortable with. It’s quite ironic considering how much he can charm ladies with words. But despite all of this, he makes it up with his actions and promises. He’ll deny wanting to go on a date with her but when push comes to shove, he’ll be there for her just as promised. He promised to celebrate Aoko’s birthday and even when circumstances prevent him from making it, he still made do with the limited time he had and prepared a spectacular present just for her because he didn’t want to break that promise. Even in Sun Halo, when he had a major glass injury, he still was willing to go on a date with her because he suggested he would bring her(a big contrast to earlier MK chapters of initiating a date). In my opinion, their most important moment (at the moment) was the clocktower heist where Kaito designed a heist for Aoko and himself, more personal than any other heist he’s done. Despite facing what was one of the most trickiest challenge he’s confronted (thanks to Shinichi), he still went through with all the effort to prevent them from relocating it, to keep their special place of memories. He even reenacted the scene from when they first met, showing that he truly does care for it just as much as she does. To reiterate, Kaito isn’t best with words but shows his love to Aoko with acts of services and promises. When he makes a promise, he will always find his way to fulfill it. He may say what can be considered mean/teasing but his true intentions lies when he puts it into action like his magic. 

So like @fuchstastisch​ says, there shouldn’t be a comparison in how much the guy loves their girl. They all have different love languages in showing their care for them and you can’t say one is better than the other if the girls understand it and love that side of them. What matters is if they treasure them to the extent of prioritizing their happiness and well-being, I say that they already love them well enough (Heiji can sometimes be a little slow on that but he still realized it), Heck in interviews, Gosho has confirmed both Shinichi AND Kaito love every aspect about their girls. Even if Shinichi shows it a lot more clearly, it doesn’t invalidate Kaito’s genuine romantic feelings he has for Aoko. He just shows it differently. While Gosho never says what Heiji loves about Kazuha like the other two, we know at this point in development he’s romantically in love with her and trying to understand it, even if his impulsiveness and competitiveness can get in the way at times.

The only thing you can compare is how far in development their relationship has progressed, not how much love they have towards their partner.

I know it would be a pretty improbable leap of logic despite the knowledge that it is possible (in-universe) since a much simpler explanation is on the table as well, but Conan being told that Kaito 1412 used to be active until 8 years ago and only recently showed up again only to find out that the guy actually seems to be incredibly young for someone who was allegedly a grown adult almost two decades prior would have made for a pretty fun "did a grown ass man (criminal) (I should just get him thrown in jail) somehow get poisoned by the same thing I was given (is he active again because his bones and joints are back in business)" subplot

I love seeing content where Shinichi forgets that he’s not Conan anymore, but I NEED to see content where everyone else forgets that he’s not Conan anymore.

Ran scolds him for “getting himself into trouble” and Shinichi has to stand there getting lectured in front of the police for doing his actual, adult job.

Heiji tries to lift Shinichi up to show him evidence, forgetting that they’re only inches apart in height now. Shinichi just kinda hangs there until he’s put down.

Kogoro yells at Shinichi for leaving the house so late and he has to explain that he’s going back to his own house. To sleep. Because he lives there.

The detective boys break into Shinichi’s house to whine about him not showing up to school that day, forgetting that he goes to college now. They pout so much when they remember that Shinichi has to promise to walk them to and back from school the next day. Haibara thinks it’s hilarious.

Akai keeps calling him “Boya” despite Shinichi being very clearly an adult man now, and Shinichi’s not entirely sure if he’s fucking with him or not.

Was rewatching the very first episode of Case Closed, and got to the point where Kudo was talking about how Arthur Conan Doyle must have written about Sherlock Holmes because he himself must have wanted to be a detective and it got me thinking…

Doyle hated writing Sherlock. Kudos to hates acting as Conan. They both felt that their creation of these people was distracting themselves from their true goals and desires.

Despite not even knowing it, Kudo named his new persona after a man who hated his own.

Really sets the scene for the rest of the series.

I was thinking about Shinichi's morality. He is someone who values life. He doesn't think one person's life should matter more than another person's life. And by life, I mean every type of life. Human and animal alike. He doesn't measure the worth of life through their actions or ethics. He just knows that every life means something and it should not be taken lightly. That is why he cannot fathom why anyone would ever take someone's life no matter what the reason is. Revenge, jealousy, love whatever it may be, it is not above the value of a life.

Whenever he has to attack or defend, he always does it with the intention to disarm, to injure and not to kill. He is someone who will endanger his own life to save someone. It makes me wonder if he thinks that his own life is not enough to treasure? We have seen multiple instances where Shinichi does stunts to save people even the cost of his own well-being. He's been shot, stabbed, beaten and kidnapped. He almost died multiple times. Does he not think that his own life also has to be valued? That he has people who love and wait for his safe return every time he steps out of the house? His friends, his allies, his parents and his ragtag family he made with Ran and Kogoro.

i think it would be a REALLY fun concept. to explore the idea of Jirokichi Suzuki finding out about Kaito's identity/whole angsty backstory, and attempting to, like. adopt him into the family???? do none of you realize how funny this would be.

actually it's even funnier if he DOESN'T know Kaito's identity but DOES know his general age (can't be older than a teenager) and his whole reason for stealing- and just. makes a public announcement about bringing Kaitou KID into the family and Kaito's just sitting there like "????????????????????" cause this was NOT discussed with him before hand and in fact he doesn't even KNOW that Jirokichi KNOWS

Lupin the Dog is fucking thrilled by this. that's the most important thing here. the moment Kaito decides to drop by Jirokichi's place and fancily says some words that basically translate to like "hey uh what??? is this a trap?? cause it's very confusing-" he gets barrelled over by a way too happy to see him dog and Jirokichi is just like "see that proves it you were meant to be part of the family from the beginning" and Kaito gets no choice in this matter

and SONOKO'S REACTION???? please it'd be so funny. fanfic writers that have the time and can actually write the dcmk characters well i am begging you to take this concept from me and run with it. PLEASE.

So the other day day I was talking to my friends abt smth (TOICHI BEING ALIVE) and then was STILL angry abt it and in the AAA mood and like. I love the new tcg art so much I drew a quick sketch of Shiho and Agasa. The little detail with them having the same frames is so cute! I have a new headcanon that after movie 26 he wanted them to have matching frames as well and gifted her sunglasses.
