Planning Your Cosplay panel, as given at SacAnime Winter 2017

Ever wanted to cosplay someone, but had no idea how to begin? Join cosplayer fabrickind to learn about how to take that first step! Topics covered will include costume choice, breaking down the parts of a costume, buying vs. making, researching materials and methods, and budgeting time and money.

This is just the bare bones of the panel, as many of the examples were elaborated on in-person, and it is just the slides, not any of my notes. It is not meant to be exhaustive or definitive, and is just meant for general advice and suggestion purposes only. If anyone has feedback they would like to give, feel free to do so. That said, I hope that people find this information useful.

Tangled: Rapunzel Cosplay/Commission Pt 2

Welcome to part 2 of my documentation of a cosplay I made for someone! This post contains the FINAL LOOK!!! DUN DUN DUNNNNNN

We left off with pictures of how the dress turned out after a VERY RUSHED four days. As I said in part 1, I was sewing in the zipper of the dress as Rapunzel-to-be stood there about to leave to go to her uncle’s house in preparation for her flight the next day. I thought we had 2 extra days, but she ended up leaving early.

This was super last minute, and so there were a few things that got messed up that I knew I wanted to fix later. When Rapunzel-to-be came back, I took the dress and first of all cut all of the loose threads that were inside. The zipper was also really wonky and had a kind of hole that I fixed as well. 

In the end, I replaced the thin cord that tied the front of the dress together. I took some leftover ribbon, sewed it in half and voila, a more substantial cord! I also fixed the wonky zipper and hand stitched some ribbon to the ends of upper puff sleeves since before it had exposed zigzag stitching.

The final results are:

Other than the fact that these pictures are posed, I do think that the dress looks tremendously better. Even just changing out the cord for a sewed ribbon really made a difference, not to mention what I said before about adding ribbon to the sleeves to hide the stitching.

Pascal is super cute as well.

Of course there are some things that could be improved upon! If possible I would’ve loved to have been able to add more to the skirt since the original skirt had a middle panel with an outer layer. I’ve seen other people make the outer skirt later out of mesh, leaving the middle open to expose the middle panel.

Like I said last post though, time constraints really took a toll, and in the end that makes it harder to add any big changes.

Also the skirt fabric gets wrinkled SO easily because it’s actually a lining fabric. Rapunzel-to-be chose it because the color accuracy was spot on. In order to make it mimic actual outer fabrics, I interfaced the entire thing so that it would actually have some weight to it.

In the end, for the first costuming gig I ever took on, this worked out despite all of the challenges (mostly the change in when Rapunzel-to-be needed the dress and when she was leaving). This definitely motivated me to get more into cosplay. I was always interested, but now I can work on cosplays for myself as well!

Tangled: Rapunzel Cosplay/Commission Pt 1

Hello everyone,

Just a warning guys, this is actually my first time making a costume/cosplay! I've only ever done regular garments before, but I think this really is what kind of got me into cosplay more!

Sorry for the super late update, but I've been in the process of moving, so not too much cosplay stuff going on here. :(

Anyways, a while ago, a friend (we'll call her Rapunzel-to-be) had approached me about possibly redoing the skirt on a Rapunzel costume she had bought online for a Disney cruise.

Oh boy.

The costume actually looks pretty good on the model, but in person, the skirt was just a mess of tulle. Let this be a lesson, kids. Don't buy sexy costumes if you're looking for accuracy, which is what she was looking for. I think at the time she had limited funds, and so she just chose the cheapest costume. Our Rapunzel to be was desperate for a new skirt, and that's where I came in.

Rapunzel-to-be had bought some fabric preemptively to fix the skirt. However, at the behest of my other friend (we'll call this one partner-in-crime), we decided to just make the ENTIRE costume for her since the Leg Avenue costume was pretty bad.

Unfortunately we couldn't use any of the fabric that Rapunzel-to-be had bought because it was too little, and it didn't suit it. So me and Partner-in-crime brought Rapunzel-to-be fabric shopping with us so that she could choose the exact colors and fabric that she wanted.

As a reference, here is what Rapunzel's dress looks like in the movie.

The hardest part was to find a fabric for the top that was the right color, but also had a design on it, since the actual dress is not just a solid color.

We did end up modifying a pattern to get the right shape.

We only barely used this pattern. Mostly we got the shape of the skirt from it, along with the sweetheart neckline at the bust and the V shape connecting to the skirt. Using the pattern pieces making up the sweetheart neckline, we made extra pieces that would then be the pieces that would be tied together at the front of the dress. We didn't use the sleeves or the white neckline part at all.

Here are some pictures of some of the progress that was made. I didn't take much because at the time I didn't realize that I was going to start a blog.

Partner-in-crime really took charge of this cosplay, modifying the pattern and doing all the heavy lifting while I just acted like a mindless zombie, doing whatever she told me to do (ironing, cutting out pieces, sewing the ribbons onto the sleeves, going to buy more lace/grommets, sewing in the zipper, etc). I was pretty salty about certain situations at this point, and so I just needed someone to guide me and tell me exactly what to do since my mood was not good haha.

Due to unfortunate circumstances, we had less time to make the dress than we originally thought, so we busted this out in 4 days. Literally I was putting in the zipper to the dress as Rapunzel-to-be stood there waiting right before she had to leave to go to her uncle's house to take off the next day. Long story short, we thought we had 2 extra days.

So the first attempt of the dress looks like this:

Since this was rushed, there were a lot of things I wanted to fix. But this post is getting really long, so in part 2 I will show the final results and also show what I fixed!

Hello Hello Hello (to the Cosplay Community)

Hello everyone (cosplayers and non-cosplayers alike),

This is officially my first blog post on this blog, and let me just introduce myself.

So my name is Angela, but I can also be referred to by my username (dreamyetude) or just as Dreamy as well (that's what my PSN friends call me anyway).

This blog is going to document my foray into the cosplay world. This will include sewing and patterning, going to cons, making my own cosplays, buying cosplays, and cosplay commissions that I have gotten. Basically this will document all of my cosplay and/or sewing projects and my experience working with others and going to cons. I will also try to have a series focused on buying vs making your own cosplays.

I haven't been to many cons, but my plans for the future will include many cons.
In a way, this is more than just documentation on the projects I am working on, the cons I go to, and the people I meet. It will also be an honest review blog for any cosplays that I do buy.

Most importantly this will also have my process when making my cosplays or the cosplays of others (tutorial style if you will).

Don’t worry guys, it’s not just going to be documenting my successes, but also my failures. I think it’s important to keep in mind our mistakes and learn from them (especially with sewing).

I’m definitely no professional when it comes to sewing (although I wouldn’t say I’m a beginner either). So if I fail, you guys will see it, and I’ll be crying probably.
