my full “rejoicing in our hair” collection!! these were the final pieces for a project for college! ✨💜
“Originally this was a college project. We were to choose a current or past event / article and create a narrative piece from it. I chose the "Natural Hair Ban of Pretoria High” that unfolded back in 2016. I created a set of 6 paintings that depict black cultural and natural hairstyles worn by black people all over the world. The black women here are seen rejoicing in their hair, through expressions of pride, joy and love. Its a direct juxtaposed response to the ban on hair and made to encourage black people all over the world who are discriminated against because of their hair"
theres only one public speedpaint! The rest are all available on my patreon. Please consider supporting me if you enjoy my work 💖

The goal is to laugh forever with someone you take seriously.
I think my parents have this. Sometimes it’s hard for them, but I’ve never doubted that they love each other. Our family dynamic isn’t perfect but love isn’t supposed to be perfect, it’s supposed to be real.

my god do you remember not being acutely aware of the fact youre a girl?? it must have been when i was 11 or 10 maybe. emily bronte saying ‘i wish i were a girl again, half savage and hardy and free’. do you find yourself envying dogs and birds or anything that doesn’t have to be pretty to live?
I vividly remember what it felt like to have my ranked life priorities as follows: 1. books. 2. eating raw brown sugar out of the baking cabinet 3. eating raw butterscotch chips out of the baking cabinet 4. books at times I wasn’t allowed to have them 5. Dragons 6. construction paper art projects 7. drinking soy sauce out of the bottle when no one was looking 8. the legality or illegality of owning an owl depending on where my dad would move to next 9. greek mythology 10. more dragons. 11. Pokemon 12. Warrior Cats
I… miss the shit out of that person. I’m working on reconnecting with her again.
same but Pokemon was/is top 5.

When you’re old, all you want to do is stare at the scenery. It’s so strange. I’ve never felt so peaceful before.

Something Happening Somewhere
Feeling the energy of my inherited culture tonight, on the eve of my first departure from the US that isn’t strictly a tropical vacation.
As we head further into this presidency, and the absurd is increasingly normalized, I worry about the way that people might miss the richness of this culture, passing over it for an idea of a militarized, radical, inhuman force, when we could do to respect the history of a nation much older than our own.
The truth is that any nation can get rich, but to believe that this amounts to a kind of wisdom is a profound foolishness. There is no substitute for cultural respect.
