Convection Inside the Mantle

Most of what we know about Earth’s interior comes from observing how seismic waves–mostly from earthquakes–bounce around. As our observations have gotten better–more seisometers, better imaging techniques–scientists have identified two large anomalies sitting near the bottom of the mantle. (Image credits: E. The scene fades into a bright, hazy memory of Todo in middle school, with his best friend and brother, Itadori. "I think I have a crush on Fushiguro," Itadori tells him, leaning by a fence with a juicebox. He looks dejected. "But, I don't think he likes me back..." "Brother..." Todo says, with great seriousness and weight. Takada-chan rejected him once before, so he understands. "Confess to him. If he says no, I'll treat you to some ramen, like you did with me." The day after, he catches Itadori with Fushiguro by his side, now a couple. He flashes Itadori a grin and a thumbs up. Itadori returns the gesture, grateful for his brother's support. Months go by. The cherry blossoms fall. Snow settles on the ground. Him, Itadori, Fushiguro, and Takada-chan smile and laugh, out at night on Christmas Eve. Just two couples and two best friends.
