Before the war
ember-lyretail:
Ember hadn’t been a member of the Dusk Coats long, but she had been grateful to them taking her in, for giving her work, food, a safe place to sleep, and more importantly a new family. She was still getting used to the way things operated, but she wasn’t too bothered by it.Â
In truth this new lifestyle was exciting and she was glad to be a part of it.
She was sitting quietly at the bar, silently enjoying the activity around her, sipping at her drink when she suddenly felt someone sit down beside her.
She looked over at the girl as she seated herself beside her, wondering who she was and what on earth she was doing here. She had never seen the woman before, but at the same time Ember didn’t know if the girl was friend or foe.
Ember had half a mind to tell her she needed to leave, but the way the woman spoke piqued Ember’s curious nature and made her realize the woman was here for a reason, so why not indulge her?
“I would say so indeed! I wasn’t expecting you to come here tonight!” She said with a soft smile, pushing aside her now empty glass and looking more directly at the woman.
“What are you doing here?” She asked casually with a soft smile, playing it off as if she really knew the girl, intrigued by her presence and wishing to know why she was here.
Praise the Fae and their unmatched ability to be equally honest and dishonest at the same time. She had half expected that she’d be carried out of here and thrown into the nearest river or something, but things seemed to work out. For now. The river was still there and they could still carry her out that way. Maybe even with a dagger in her back. Everyone was keeping their options open.Â
“ I’m here because I need a job.” she said and waved to the barkeeper to order the two of them something to drink. She was optimistic that he would know what the women beside her would want to drink and ordered herself some mead. It was her drink of choice and it was unlikely to kill her if it was bad.
When Evy looked around again the guy that had bothered her before had backed off. He was still keeping an eye on her but it seemed to satisfy him that this woman was accepting of her. And the readhead was determines to keep it that way.Â
Looking around some more, to make sure they weren’t overheard, she quietly spoke, “ I’m Evy by the way. Or Hawke. Whatever you like better.” Names were dangerous but also important. If she made enemies here it would be bad that they knew her name, but if she would start to work for them it would be important that they knew whom to ask for, so this was a risk she had to take.Â
Besides, it would’ve been impolite to not introduce herself after that. “ I’m not here to join.. I just want some work as a sort of freelancer.”Â
