WE NEED TIME We are so used to communicating through things that we forget it need not be so for the rest of creation. Our literature, our art, our language, our ritual, indeed that elusive construct called culture, are all present for us to send messages to beings like ourselves and those very unlike the human being. Even love, the most pertinent message of all, requires of us the time to communicate what we may know in an instant. And so, what should be known and oathed on the day of marriage, takes years to live out. For example, the expression ‘Bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh’ (though more a statement of fact perhaps than one of sentiment), will take many altercations with a serpent to test, forge and ultimately speak what was present in the beginning. Needless to say, none of this applies to the Master of history, God Himself. Being outside of time, He does not require a continuum to reveal Himself, neither among the persons of the Trinity, nor even to man. And yet, all of that being true, God still condescends to our way of communicating. You see, it took time for God to reveal that the Lord is one and not just another god among many. “Hear oh Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.” Deuteronomy 6:4 It took time for the lex talionis (i.e. an eye for an eye) to replace the brutal but widespread practice of tribe annihilation; and it took even more time to get us from the lex talionis to God’s fullest plan for humanity, His sons and daughters: “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…” Matthew 5:44 And while we could have known these things in a moment, God chose a better way; a way in which we could experience God’s love and have it inscribed in our memory. So now, as human beings, we can remember and partake in the sacrifice on the cross, and as individuals we can remember the countless times the Lord has loved me. “Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” 1 John 4:11 In other words, if we choose, we can both look backward and forward to find the Lord with us.
