It was already busy and soon he was sure he would see an acceptable companion to share in the rest of his bottle, though the wait was already making him testier than normal. He took a deep breath, turning back to the bar and downing his glass before gesturing for a refill and then again for the bottle to be left as well. Tonight would be the last time he would drink for months and he was hoping to make the most of it seeing as he was fully intending on making it all the way to the world cup with the team they had this year. The pressure was mounting, sure, but he could handle anything and the prospect of the signing bonus he would receive after having a world title under his belt was enough to make him only passingly sad that he wouldn’t drink again until the victory champagne hit his tongue.

He had other vices to indulge in its absence anyway.

He turned toward the figure suddenly blocking his light, his eyebrow rising as his face relaxed into the almost aimlessly harmless half grin he usually wore. He had been told it was rather disarming as a boy and hadn’t stopped wearing it since. “Are you trying to wave down the barman?” he asked, “Because you’ll never do it if you keep being as timid as you are.”

emma recognized the voice before she even turned her head towards it; she could picture the smirk that accompanied it, too. a surprise, sure, but perhaps the sort of surprise that shouldn’t have been one. if she needed a night to unwind before the grind of the season really kicked in, why shouldn’t amycus be in the same boat? she turned on the ball of her foot, a sort of half pivot that put her in the perfect position to look down the slope of her nose at where he sat at the bar. “ timid? ” emma asked, the tone of her voice anything but. of course, they were all friends here. she couldn’t be seen overstepping too far; it was anything but timid, but playful in its bravado. the sort of thing that told her teammate, look, I’m also in on the joke. I can play this game just as well as you. she cocked her eyebrow at amycus, the delicate arch of it in on the joke, too. “ I’m simply being polite, I’ll have you know — I’ve never seen the need to shriek to get attention.” as if on cue, the drunk girl at the other side of the bar let out a piercing guffaw. emma winced; she never needed to shriek to get attention, true. even truer was the fact that emma always got the right kind of attention. the same couldn’t be said for everyone. she cut her gaze back to amycus, a smirk cutting across her own face, just as playful as her words. “ though I’ll admit, maybe I wasn’t trying too hard to get his attention. always easier to get a man’s attention, and see if he’ll buy my drink. what d’you say? feel like helping a girl out? “

“ now, I’m not so sure I’d even need to ask them, “ emma said, absently looking past marlene and towards the bar. “ I’ve always sworn to friends that the drinks seem to get bigger the longer the night goes on. seems a good enough tactic to keep patrons longer, too.” emma had certainly made stranger idle small talk while waiting for the barkeep’s attention; though she’d never had to devote this much thought to how bars kept customers around.

she cut her glance to marlene, a little curious despite herself. she hadn’t paid much mind to who stood next to her before striking out on this polite conversation; emma could forgive herself for mistaking the girl as an employee, since, now that marlene mentioned it, the sight of her in the pub was a little more than vaguely familiar. she smirked to herself, the quirk of her lips a private expression as she turned away from marlene again. emma wondered if more people than her assumed marlene worked here — amused herself with the thought of someone handing her their finished plates and glasses. “ do you really think they’d serve me one of the larger glasses if I asked? “

Sipping on her recently ordered cup of tea, Narcissa’s eyes scanned over the pages of this mornings Daily Prophet.
