Maybe I've said it before but I am pro smut... And also pro porn. I think there's a difference between the industries and what specifically gets pushed versus general smut. I also think that smut has less of a harmful impact than real people porn does (because there's always the chance someone in pornographic material has not consented to those photos/videos either being taken or the entire action happening). I think you have to be pro both if you're gonna be pro sex worker. I think you shouldn't shame people for reading smut as we're actively seeing a decline in literacy rates, however I also think there is a genuine conversation to be had about how porn and smut affect people's perceptions of sex (such as choking becoming a more normalized kink without people understanding the risk they're taking with said kink due to porn showcasing it, or such as smut readers being more adverse to condoms because of the lack of them in erotic literature). There is also genuine conversation to be had about why (typically) women feel they need to do some form of sex work just to stay alive. I am also pro legalizing prostitution, because it keeps it safe for the workers and customers and prohibiting it only makes it more dangerous (see also: I am very pro destigmatizing and reducing sentences for heavy drug usage, and I am very pro harm reduction for any addiction. I think addicts deserve to have more options than just "quit cold turkey" and "go to jail and have your life ruined," especially when it tends to be lower income people who struggle with drug abuse, which also tends to be people of color because it is disproportionally harder for them to get out of poverty than it is for white people [signed, a white person]). I don't think we should be immediately writing off the idea of people consuming erotic material, especially since it has existed for forever. I also think porn and smut addictions are very real and there are important discussions to be had about those.
