Seeing discourse about this again (not necessarily on Tumblr which I've been less active on lately, around the Internet, but there are a few people on here who bring this up every once in a while) so just a reminder: "the candidate should fit the district" goes both ways. I see a lot of people who use this to mean "the Democrat who runs for an R+2 district probably shouldn't be a hardline progressive" and sure, but then those same people throw fits when a deep-blue urban district in New York or Boston or Austin or Portland elects a self-described socialist who has a history of criticizing Netanyahu or supporting defunding police departments and it's like... y'all, this is also a district electing someone who represents what they stand for. I get that some specific people on here who pretend to be pragmatic but at this point are just genuine centrists in terms of their own politics don't want to hear this, but progressives also deserve to have representatives who represent us. And people who are on the left are allowed to be frustrated with centrists who keep voting differently than they would vote on issues they care about, and an overly moderate candidate can be demotivating for a progressive electorate. It's fine for those voters to say "nah, let's pick someone who actually fits what we want in a representative." That's what voting is supposed to do!

Anyway, if you want to take issue with overly-extreme candidates representing parts of the country that are much swingier, the issue there is on the Republican side. There are lots of hardened MAGA in R+singledistrict suburban districts that could easily flip this year with some nudging. There's the Texas Senate race. Idk I think the idea of Ken Paxton and Ted Cruz being the representatives for a state full of minorities, progressives and liberals of all shapes, and immigrants should be the thing that's engaging you far more than Brooklyn socialists electing other Brooklyn socialists.

Friendly reminder that the intro to Lion King….the non english bits leading up to the “circle of life” is not random yelling in *Africa voice* it is an actual language, Zulu, spoken by 10 million people, it is the most widely spoken language (out of 11) in the country of South Africa (1 out of the 54 countries in the continent of Africa, the continent home  to somewhere between 1500-2000 languages and around 3000 distinct ethnic groups)

this isn’t to say that you have to friggin learn the language to sing along with a disney film, it just means that you should be mindful, respectful, appreciative and respectful. don’t be yelling out whatever noise comes in to your head when you hear it

I would like to further add that language has there own cultural nuances so something that can sound extremely meaningful in one languages may not sound as majestic when translated to another (I know this as someone who has an understanding of 5 languages and speaks 3 of them fluently) so if you are thinking “oh it ain’t that deep they are just yelling: the lion is coming!” dial it back

Worth noting that “lion” and especially the word Ingonyama is a very respectful word to talk about a Zulu king, especially in praise. It’s so heavily associated with royalty in isiZulu that a different word is used for an animal lion - Ibhubesi. This isn’t just announcing the arrival of an animal, it’s celebrating the arrival (or coronation?) of the king

I would also like to state that the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” is an extremely washed out version of the original song “Mbube” by Solomon Linda, a South African musician. It was appropriated by the west and he never received credit or money for what became an extremely famous song. His family eventually received a small sum from Disney for the song but again, not much considering the history of the song. There is a documentary about it right now on netflix.

ignore the title of this google doc because it's a long story but it's a really solid recipe for southwest chicken alfredo

this is a vegetarian potato curry recipe that's about 75% spices; once you get the potatoes in there you can really do whatever you want with it

this is literally just pasta, broccoli, and cheese babey and you can live off that shit for DAYS it makes such a big portion

bro this spinach/pesto/3 cheese flatbread is so fucking tasty bro

also you can make the flatbread yourself it's super quick!!

oh hey I'm eating this white chickpea chili right now, much like the curry it's mostly spices and you can do p much do whatever you want with it

don't let the name fool you these potatoes are delicious any time. not just breakfast.

this is slightly more than five ingredient when you add them together but if you have time and really wanna fuckin treat yourself I recommend these chicken strips + this cornbread + either these potatoes or these buttered veggies on the side.

as much as i wished they had given us canon byler, i fell like if they did, we wouldn’t have art and fics like ytmh(iws) and ttmd;ttms and super solar and spit swear and all these other fics that are just mike and will who are fucking scared and have feelings and are trying to figure out life and figure out themselves and figure out each other. i don’t think we would have these kinds of raw, teenage love, and for that, i’m kind of thankful that byler isn’t canon.
