Thank you Breen for commissioning me and letting me have this grand opportunity too not only draw Vanitas (properly) after all these years, but challenged me to draw Cain from StarFighter as well! miss something? second pair of eyes? in what world did this man think he needed to be monitored in the same way a trainee would on their first day at a new job? what's worse is the nonchalance with which he's addressed such that his arrogance had taken a beating. perhaps cain was right; taking a breather might really have been in his best interest.

& so, vanitas pushed his chair back slowly ( not nearly as harshly as they both know he could have ) and stood to his feet, arms reaching up in what was perhaps a performative stretch, but a good one nonetheless. it had been a while since he'd started, anyway, and a break at this point was more than justified, especially when he knew it would irritate his partner as he'd worked to provide the data he needed on a tight deadline. cain would, however, be at least relieved to know he didn't plan on leaving the building, but instead brewing a fresh pot of coffee, which he would enjoy without his eyes narrowed into a screen. relax, he'd said— and vanitas planned to do just that.

' i'm sure you could use a break from micromanaging me. you've worked hard at it all day, after all. ' the words were spoken just above the rim of his mug as he took a sip of the coffee he'd made. ' why don't you come join me? '

cain knows that there's a limit to how much vanitas is willing to tolerate from him, naturally. unfortunately for vanitas, he is a very patient man, and he's also not afraid to find out what that limit is. maybe there's a part of him that should be, but what can he say; he likes the thrill.

❛ watching you is hard work, i'm glad you agree. ❜ cain replies with a distinct absence of tone despite the obvious sarcasm, shrugging his shoulders as he walks over to grab a mug of his own. they've both been staring at that computer screen for what surely must have been several hours, and have hardly gotten any further than they did when they started this task earlier in the week. it's a joint effort that they both need to execute if they want to get out of each other's hair sooner rather than later.

he sighs as he picks up the pot to pour coffee into his own cup, the steam tickling his nose as it wafts into his face. he gives vanitas a pointed facial expression, so unlike the cheeky grin he gave him in the morning. he owes him the seriousness in this moment, just this once. ❛ listen. i do appreciate you working so hard to get these files. i don't usually get sent in for the tech-y stuff, so i don't know why the higher-ups thought this was a good idea... but whatever. it works out for the both of us, doesn't it? you mentioned it having something to do with a job you were planning. ❜

whoops, there goes his last nerve + @everglows

‘ could you get the fuck away from me? your hovering is annoying, and it's not gonna get you your files any faster. ‘ amber eyes whipped around from where vanitas sat almost comfortably in his plush chair to glare at the man who'd been pestering him with attempts at conversation he simply couldn't care for while doing what he had asked for; search for data on a mutual target of theirs. the worst part of it all was the way he insisted on breathing down his neck, proximity mixed with the way he cain was simply too friendly for their given arrangement grated at his nerves until his patience had run out and all he was left with was enough bottled up annoyance, that when shaken, had exploded.

' just go do something else if you're bored. you don't have to hover over me. '

cain is capable of many things: being mysterious, cunning, intelligent, likable, and always one step ahead. his flexibility is what makes him such an invaluable asset and sent on the most covert of missions; being able to seamlessly blend into any situation lends to his success rate. being accommodating, however, is unfortunately not one of them. he believes that his charm is enough to make up for what he lacks, and it both intrigues him as well as frustrates him that it doesn't seem to be working with vanitas — though, he's sure he's been able to mask that second thing well enough for it to not be noticed, if vanitas' reaction to his general presence and demeanor is anything to go by.

❛ i'm sensing a lot of hostility here. ❜ he replies, his tone light and airy despite the venom he's responding to, not acquiescing in the slightest. (he would never give vanitas the satisfaction.) ❛ you need to relax. i'm just making sure you're being thorough. besides, it helps to have a second set of eyes to make sure you don't miss something. ❜
