Evil wizard tasteful pin-up magazine but it's all photos of like, skinny old goths coyly fingering cursed amulets, long-bearded sorcerers doing the 'oopsie' pose as their corrosive destruction spell destroys enough of their own robes to show some skin, naked desiccated lich king positioning his staff of human skulls just so it leaves something to the imagination, dark knights in full armor just holding their soul-eating blades out in front of their codpieces, orc chieftain who did not understand the assignment and is posing with a monster he killed like one of those guys-with-fish photos. Hey so uh,

As a trans guy who’s been working out for a few years now and has learned a lot about their body and building muscle and whatnot in the process, here’s something I don’t see mentioned, like ever. 

Abs don’t really look Like That™ when they’re relaxed.

Here’s a few examples from a Reddit thread asking for pictures of people both flexing and not flexing their abs

I rarely see male body positivity posts in general but I’ve never seen this mentioned, and honestly? Call me stupid for it if you want, but I genuinely thought that super defined look was something that was achievable in a relaxed state, simply because I’ve never seen anything to the contrary. 

As someone with body dysmorphia as well as dysphoria, you can imagine the damaging effects that might have had on my mental health trying by to achieve the impossible. I can only imagine how many other masculine folk out there could be struggling with the exact same thing.

Anyway like, this is mostly to point out for masculine folks that might be pushing themselves too hard, that you’re probably doing better than you realise.

Anecdotal stuff aside, this is an important thing for artists to remember as well! This is something I never realised despite being an artist that goes to figure drawing classes on the regular and having modelled for them myself- because of course people with abs are flexing for the poses! Bodies actively being posed and relaxed bodies look VASTLY different and that’s ok! There’s nothing wrong about the natural and relaxed look of your body, it’s still just as wonderful

Man it is absolutely buckwild that this post has reached as many people as it has. I only found out today it ended up on BoredPanda (would’ve been nice to have been asked before they blasted the fact that I’m trans across the broader internet but whatever) and I’m glad it’s helped as many people as it has.

The best piece of advice I ever got was not meant as advice, but as an edict. If I was going to threaten people as a joke, it had to be so far out of proportion with what happened that it would be obvious I was joking. This changed how I expressed frustration with others. It then changed how I expressed frustration with myself.

Not “I’m going to hit you” but “I am going to buy a tuna sub from the gas station and hide it under the seat of your car”

Not “I’m going to kill myself” but “I am going to walk into the desert and let the scarabs take me”

The other side then happened. When I mess something up, instead of saying it’s bad and perpetuating negative thoughts, swing hard the other way.

Not “this art is terrible” but “this shall be framed and mounted on the wall in my museum exhibition as testament to the suffering I had to overcome”

Have been doing this since high school. It was my drama teacher who asked me to please stop scaring the actors. The other half of the edict was that I had to say it in a polite tone, and end it with either please or thank you.

Life changing. 10/10 Mr Muëller. Highly reccomend.

Underused Ways to Write Nonverbal Characters (Without Making Them Silent and Forgettable)

• They answer questions with timing instead of words

• They tap or gesture toward objects instead of explaining

• Their expressions react a beat before everyone else processes something

• They repeat small gestures that the people close to them learn to read

• They tilt their head instead of asking a question

• Withdraws into focused work when emotional rather than seeking conversation

• Their body language is emphasized

• They communicate urgency through movement, not sound

• They might use sign language, texting/notes, gestures, or expressions with basic sound

• Keeps track of details about people (favorite food, routines, habits) and uses those details to show that they care)

• A sarcastic nonverbal character might rely heavily on eye rolls, slow claps, and deadpan stares

• A shy one might use tiny gestures, hesitant touches, and lots of eye contact avoidance.

• Solves problems immediately instead of discussing them

• A confident one might use bold gestures, direct eye contact, and very confident physical language

• They interrupt conversations physically instead of verbally

• They point things out others missed because they’re always observing

• They respond to tone, mood, and tension faster than dialogue

• They use eye contact very deliberately

• They hand people objects instead of explaining what they mean

• They create their own small signals with people they trust

• They pay attention to things everyone else misses
