Remembering the time Luis severino told Sean manaea to name his kid after him and he’d pay for his kids college fund
Genuinely makes me laugh every time I think of it
getting near that modern spirit: alejandro kirk in celebration
also available on ao3 (archive locked)
Collage made on cardstock with old magazines, newspapers, catalogues, and other discarded paper. There are 206 pieces (if I counted right) and it took me just over 21 hours in total.
Photo used to make my template. This is from the last game of the regular season, when Kirk hit 2 home runs to help the Jays clinch the division. It was incredible.
Title, as usual, from the Tragically Hip: The Modern Spirit
If I had a nickel for every time I heard a white ostensibly progressive sports fan on Al Gore's internet say something insanely racially coded about a player they don't like (or one they do like, for that matter), I would have a lot more than two nickels. It would be a concerning amount of money.
The variation on this is "well, based on what I know about you, you didn't think what you just said was racist, but the last ten people I heard make that same point were all being racist about it, so I'll just have to assume you're a lot more ignorant to broader sports discussion than I thought."
Yeah, this is really a baseball post, so here's the recommended reading list of Baseball Prospectus's 2020 quartet of articles on racial bias in qualitative player analysis and its systemic effects on players' careers. These touch on a lot of the common stereotypes and trends that permeate the game; the ones I think are most pervasive and perhaps easiest to spot are "white players are much more likely to be described as hardworking and/or having hustle/grit/a good attitude" and "Black players are systemically moved from infield to outfield during their careers".
A long and ugly history has left deep scars on the game.
Language matters.
A statistical analysis of promotions shows that White players have a huge advantage.
Baseball has some of the most extreme positional disparities in sports.
Extremely high-profile real-life lesson #1 because baseball certainly never fails to serve up real examples that surpass anything you could ever make up: the Kelenic-Snitker-Acuña incident.
Saturday's base running gaffe with Jarred Kelenic was similar to one in August 2019 when Acuña was removed from a game by Snitker.
“I don’t look for [Kelenic] to not [run out a double], because he plays with his hair on fire all the time”
Like. One of these players has torn two ACLs because he tries so fucking hard and it sure as hell isn’t Jarred Kelenic. What an insane thing to admit, that you hold the (Afro-Latino) stars of your team to a different standard than a (white) platoon outfielder with a career OPS+ of 85 because you think that guy hustles more. It’s so absurdly blatant that even when deflecting the conversation off of race/nationality as every official coverage seems to be doing, journalists like Ken “dogwhistling the Padres for fun and profit” Rosenthal are siding with Acuña.
And yet, this kind of thing likely happens all the time, and the attitudes that lead to it certainly do. Good on Acuña for saying what nobody else would.
