Discipline in Witchcraft

What separates a Witch from a Powerful Witch are two things: time and discipline. Witchcraft is a craft, just like painting or singing. While there is certainly nothing wrong with doodling or humming in the shower if that is what makes you happy, if you want to end up in museums or sing opera, you’re going to have to develop the discipline in order to motivate yourself. Witchcraft is the same. Very, very few people are innately talented enough to master everything about Witchcraft without developing discipline and sticking to a routine.

Discipline isn’t something you develop over night; it is something that needs to be nurtured slowly over time. Discipline is a bit like a plant. You begin with a small seed that, with time, effort, and care, will slowly grow into a beautiful flower. However, if you neglect your plant by forgetting to water it daily, your flower will shrivel. And if instead of consistently watering your plant, you forget and allow it to dry out, and then dousing it in water once you remember, you may drown your flower or cause root rot. Discipline is the same way: you need to consistently care for it daily in order for it to grow properly. Neglect or excessive inconsistency can kill your discipline.

So how do you become a more disciplined Witch?

-First, identify the areas of your Craft that are strong. Perhaps you already have a daily meditation practice or perform a weekly cleansing ritual consistently. Reward yourself for these successes! If you don’t yet have something you do on a daily or weekly basis, find something in your Craft that you do regularly, but do it more often. For example, if you do a morning Tarot spread every now and then, transition to doing a daily spread at the same time each morning. Get in the habit of doing something, anything, related to your Craft on a consistent basis. In the beginning, it may be helpful to set an alarm when you’re supposed to practice if you are prone to forgetting until it becomes a habit. Once you learn how to create one habit, you can begin incorporating more into your daily/weekly craft.

-Passion and discipline go hand in hand. Do what you can to maintain your passion for the Craft while building your discipline to keep you motivated even when you’re ready to call it quits. Read books and blog posts about Witchcraft, follow more experienced Witches online, or join a local community or Coven. If you ever find yourself beginning to slack off, remind yourself just how much you love Witchcraft.

-Set tangible goals for yourself. Sometimes it can be difficult to maintain our sense of discipline if we don’t have anything specific that we’re working towards. Is there a ritual that you’ve always wanted to attempt but felt you didn’t have the skills? Begin planning out what you would need to do in order to get to a point where you can comfortably perform the ritual, and use that plan to structure your daily/weekly practice.

-Once you get comfortable with creating habits, setting goals, and maintaining your passion for the Craft, you may find it helpful to create a schedule in a planner or Google Calendar. Creating daily, weekly, and monthly schedules can help you stay organized and prevent yourself from being overwhelmed. When planning, be sure to mark down mundane responsibilities as well so you don’t accidentally overbook yourself or cause an imbalance between your mundane and Craft life. Creating a daily, weekly, and monthly schedule can help you keep track of regular tasks and auspicious days. You can even record astrological phenomena in your planner to help you choose the best dates for certain activities.

-While being disciplined is certainly helpful, burning yourself out is not, so be sure to schedule time for breaks and relaxation. While it may be tempting to do everything all at once, remember the plant analogy: if you over-water your plant, your flower may drown and die. If you push yourself too hard too quickly, you may burn out and find it even harder to stay on track. But if you consistently set aside time to unwind and step away from your Craft, you’ll be less likely to overwhelm yourself.

It is important to remember that your Craft is your own. Don’t be discouraged if you find your schedule only allows you to devote a small amount of time to your Craft. Discipline isn’t about spending every waking moment practicing Witchcraft; it is about consistently cultivating your Craft through regular practice. Practicing five minutes every other day is better than practicing for five hours once a month since it keeps your momentum going and your growth steady. Those five minutes each day bring you five minutes closer to your goals.

bathtime meditation

general relaxing bathtime tips:

🛁 if you can put your phone in a safe place, play some music that relaxes you

🕯️ use a homemade scrub to exfoliate (brown sugar and coconut oil works great for me!

🛁 put your towels and clothes on a heater so they’re toasty when you get out

🕯️ if you can do so safely, light some candles or LED lights

🛁 get a small towel or old t-shirt to cushion your neck

🕯️ try adding teabags, sea salt/epsom salts, or bath bombs to your tub

meditation guide:

lower your head into the water so your ears are submerged, but your mouth and nose are free

place your hands on your stomach or chest and begin to breathe deeply - inhaling through your nose, and exhaling through your mouth

bring your focus to the rise and fall of your breath, and any other sensations you feel

let other thoughts come and go, bringing your focus back to your breath when you notice your mind wandering

try counting your breaths up to 10 if you’re having trouble quieting your mind

spend as long as you like relaxing like this - but if you notice yourself getting tired, be sure to stop the exercise, since falling asleep in the bath can be so dangerous

Nightmare Warding Stuffed Animal Spell

A spell to enchant one of your furry stuffed friends to protect you through the night from nightmares and unpleasant dreams.

You will Need:

A stuffed animal

Scissors

Needle and thread

Small piece of Amethyst (prevents and protects from nightmares)

Small piece of Rose Quartz (brings happy dreams)

Paper and Pen

A sigil that prevents nightmares

Steps:

Using your pen, on the small piece of paper draw your sigil. Place it to the side with your crystals. Make sure your crystals are very small so that they don’t make holding your stuffed animal uncomfortable.

Kiss your stuffed animal to let it know that you wish not to harm it and if needed speak to it a bit.

On a seam that could easily be repaired using your scissors gently snip some of the thread so there is a small opening.

“With these crystals and sigil, I ask you to protect me in the night from the dreams that cause me unrest.” place in crystals and sigil

Sew up the hole as neatly and tightly as you can, you wish it not to rip open again.

Kiss where you have sealed the seam. “I thank you deeply for you help.”

Place on your bed. When sleeping make sure stuffed animal is on the bed with you or in your arms.

To cleanse after a few nights place in the window in the sunlight or moonlight for 2-3 hours.

open your curtains and blinds and windows to let in a little fresh air and sun into the house

start journaling– being in-tune with yourself will improve you as a witch

write letters or send care packages to witchy friends with things like bay leaves, sigils, and kind notes

on your next grocery run, grab some seeds or plants and plant whatever is in season where you are. try something that can grow in your windowsill, if you’re new! this is a way to have sustainable ingredients for your witchcraft that has no pesticides and is cultivated with your energy.

alternatively, get flower seeds and plant them around your home. this will also give you a reason to step outside to tend to them from time to time.

learn a new song or hymn and perform it as an offering to your deity of choice

make a list of this year’s dates of full and new moons, transits, and holidays and mark them in your calendar or put them in the notes of your phone

take the time to monitor your own energy and take care of yourself <3

Cleansing tools

For best results, perform during the waning phase of the moon. (After a full moon, before a new moon).

Cleansing with Air:

For this spell,  you’ll need incense or a smudge stick. The best incenses for cleansing are white sage, rosemary, or copal. Start by lighting your incense, then, pass your item through the smoke. Imagine that all the impurities are burning in the smoke. Do this for as many times as you need. Then, let the incense go off by itself. Go outside and scatter the ashes to the four winds to finish the spell.

Cleansing with Earth:

Cleansing with earth is probably the easiest way of all. This method works best if you are outside. If you must stay inside, you can use a bowl of earth, sand, or salt. First, plant your magickal tool into the ground. Let the earth take back all the unwanted energies. Visualize the soiled energies going back to Mother Earth, so she can reuse them. If you’re inside, go out and scatter the earth to the four winds to complete the spell.

Cleansing with Fire:

The element of fire is a more aggressive, but very potent cleansing tool. To do this spell, you will need a red candle. Alternatively, if you happen to have a fireplace in your house, that’s even better, but if you live in a small apartment, a candle is enough. First, light your candle with intent, as if you were summoning the fire element into your space. Now, rapidly pass your item through the flame, and imagine that the impurities are burning into the fire. Do it for as long and you need. When you’re done, let the candle/fire go off by itself.

Cleansing with Water:

If you’re purifying a book or a tarot deck, merely use a drop of water, or replace it with an oil. To do this, you can use any kind of water (or oil). Some people say that it’s wrong to use tap water, but I do it all the times and I still get good results. Now, you can do this in two ways. You can plunge your item completely into the water, or just use a drop or two if your item is fragile. Then, visualize all the soiled energies washing off. Put your item aside and empty your container outside. Let your magickal tool dry by itself. That’s it!

Cleansing with Crystals:

This spell works best with hematite, onyx or obsidian, but any black stone can do. First, place your stones in a circle on your sacred space. Put your item in the centre. Imagine a ray of light, connecting all your stones. The ray of light becomes an orb, with your object inside. Now, imagine that the unwanted energies, locked into the orb, are absorbed by the stones. Dissipate the orb. Leave your stones a night or two under the moonlight to cleanse them.

Cleansing with a Singing Bowl:

First, if your item is small enough, place in inside of your bowl. If not, don’t worry, you can simply lay it flat on your altar, with your singing bowl on top, so that the vibrations are touching the object. Now, play your singing bowl. As the sound resonates, feel its vibrations. Let the sound waves capture the unwanted energies. When the sound fades, the unwanted energies are fading with it. Now everything is clean again.
