Lmao this sibling-like argument😂😂😂😂
Naru is actually really supportive and kind to Mai. While he does tease her and poke at her buttons, they don’t butt heads as much as fanfiction can make it appear; aside from the one explosive argument where she calls Naru a murderer, they actually kind of get along most of the time.
Their friendship/relationship is filled with respect, care, and teasing at the end of day.
THANK YOU.
Both of them tease each other so much. (well. Mai fails the majority of the time). But they rarely ever get toxic or seriously argue with each other.
Mai actually calls him out when he does shit he shouldn’t and is there to make up for what he has no talent in doing:human interaction. On the other hand He teaches her what he knows about Ghost Hunting and even tries to comfort her his own way when needed.
Reminder that Naru was the first to believe in Mai’s intuition! While everyone else was telling her that she wasn’t a psychic!
Also, before Mai ever even caught feelings for Naru, she was ardently defending him against Ayako and Monk!
Also the fact Naru would reprimand Mai for getting into dangerous situations (unintentionally) but he never actually got Upset with her, he was more just like “alright, here we go again”- even when they went down the well, where Mai wasn’t supposed to be near.
It’s because he’s used to Gene.
I'm back on my Ghost Hunt bullshit and I just need people to appreciate all the different kinds of love and affection that are so openly displayed by all the characters through the original novels, the manga, and the anime (even if the anime ends before The Big Reveal.)
It hit me more than ever this read through just how much of an "Oh, that makes sense," moment the others go through when they realize Naru has been grieving Gene the whole time and how it affected his personality. Leaving aside Mai and Naru's personal dynamic at that point, the way Hosho, Ayako, John and Yasu show such genuine sympathy (despite just mercilessly dragging his ass when they confronted him about being Oliver Davis) shows how much they care, and what they do to express it, and the biggest part of that is making sure he knows he's not alone and he never has been, even after his parents show up. The Davis' pinpoint Hosho and Ayako as the two other adults who've supported Naru through thick and thin (when they didn't know him and had no obligation to keep coming when he called, because it takes so much for Naru to ask for help) and their gratitude is palpable on the page.
And that's not even getting into the way that, through all her own feelings, Mai tries to re-assured Masako that Naru never hated her for knowing immediately about Gene-- he just wasn't ready for *anyone* to know-- and yet, he took her comb in The Bloodstained Labyrinth as his own way of making sure she was still alive, knowing at any moment he could be seeing her death the way he saw Gene's--which shows how glad in *some way* he was that one person knew about Gene; knew why Naru was in Japan at all.
Ayako is another character whose affection for the others shines through, most obviously in Forbidden Past-time and Haunted Mansion. She drives everyone back to her apartment *literally drenched in blood*, lets them shower (and deals with Hosho sitting around in just a towel and shorts while his clothes wash) and then ends up passed out with John in sheer exhaustion. Then there's her sheer, stubborn love in Haunted Mansion, despite how (really, unfairly) scathing Hosho was of her almost for the whole book (and at least some of that is because he pushed her to do the exorcism instead of waiting for John, and there's got to be so much guilt there--he's more angry at himself than he is her, and I think, on this read-through, she knows that.)
What comes through for Naru, and really everyone by the end is that grief is just love trying to remember what it looks like in the dark, and that shared grief--like a chain of people holding hands, groping for the light switch--helps love remember itself just that much easier.
I've never seen a writer capture that sentiment better than Ono Fuyumi. Nothing her characters do ever feels out of character or beyond reason, especially once you find out what Naru's real deal is.
I am looking for the full set of the English manga. I have found it incredibly difficult to find anything REASONABLY priced. Does anyone know anything on how to get hands on the English copies?
I don't think the English copies are in print anymore, your best bet is to try for second hand ones on selling sites like eBay. Maybe one of our followers knows?
@lemony-snickers replies to a post:

Inktober day 16!! Kazuya Shibuya and Mai Taniyama from Ghost Hunt!!
Do you happen to know anywhere I can buy the ghost hunt manga in English everywhere I look it’s like 50 dollars a book?
I don't I'm sorry! My best bet would be selling sites like Ebay or Amazon. I think they're out of print in English. Perhaps a follower here knows of good links?
Does Naru and Mai end up together?
Nooo they don't because Naru wasn't looking for love during his time in Japan and Mai feels content with her one sided love.
I honestly would say that I am so happy I came across this Tumblr blog. I recently just binged the anime of "Ghost Hunt' before reading the manga. I am sad that it didn't get a season two or some sort of OVA to it (let alone re-animation) but happy this exists. ^_^
Ahhh thank you!
All the big time fandoms around that era have been getting reboots so HOPEFULLY we can get a reboot of ghost hunt too!
Now you've completed the anime you can read the manga and the sequel too!
Just re-read Ghost Hunt
Aka one of the best horror drama manga I’ve ever read ever
Shibuya Physic Research is an organization consisting of a scientific ghost hunter, a Buddhist monk, a Shinto miko, a Catholic priest, an Onmyouji, a spirit medium, and two high school students, that solve paranormal activities all over Japan.
Sometimes I reblogged this series and always mentioned that it hurt and yes it hurts.
Re-reading it makes everything much clearer like holy shit the clues were there all along.
It has old shoujo art, the manga was adapted first in 1998 after all, but it’s still pretty clean and I personally like the aesthetic.
Make no mistake though. The same art style also have the ghost creepy af like
The tension is so good like I feel like I’m watching a horror movie
The cases often use familiar base themes like creepy dolls, and haunted buildings, but also adapt on stuff that horror nerds are familiar with, such as Kokkuri-san or The Winchester House.
When they explain they explain a lot though, maybe you’ll get bored reading it.
All arcs are excellent but if I have to rank, it’d be: #3 Bloodstained Labyrinth arc #2 The Cursed House arc #1 Oliver Davis arc (Which is actually still a part of Forgotten Children arc but really don’t have anything to do with the case itself)
The last one does not have much horror in it but it serves as a brilliant closing to the whole story and personally it destroys me in so many ways I couldn’t comprehend.
There is a discussion about the past events between China and Japan through characters from those respective countries and how it should affect them as people today. While the conversation isn’t long, I think it’s worth mentioning, not only because it serves as relationship building between the cast but also because to this day, this is the only one out of lots of manga I’ve read that does this blatantly, without using different names whatsoever.
The characters’ relationship is so precious and at the same time realistic too. They all start out as actual coworkers and you know things with coworkers aren’t always smooth, but they learn to bond with each other as they face dangers together.
It has romance? Yes. Has love triangles? Yes. Love rivals befriending each other? Yes. Love rivals acknowledging that the object of their affection, no matter how much they like him, is still mostly an ass? Yes. Love triangle turns messy? Oooh yes.
This actually has a sequel Akumu no Sumu Ie which is equally scary but lasts only 20-ish chapters and please don’t read it before the main series it has big spoilers.
Fuyumi Oono and Shiho Inada madams thank u for breaking my heart I love it
I’ve never checked the anime out though, so can’t say anything about it.
Tl;dr: came for horror, got heartache instead
What happens in the end? Who killed Naru's brother?
NARU SPOILERS:
We never really find out who killed Eugene. The only information Naru receives with his powers when holding Eugene’s clothes is that it was a woman with long hair and that he was still alive after the car hit him as he was still conscious enough to watch the car drive away. With that its safe to assume this same woman came back later without calling an ambulance, realized he was dead and tied him up in the trashbag and dumped his body in the ocean. =(
I have never been so happy to see a fandom thriving other than right now. I've been in love with it since the early 2000s and I'M SO HAPPY PEOPLE ARE STILL HERE AAAAAA YOU'RE GREAT
Sorry for not really keeping this blog active!
Hi! I came across this recently and was wondering if you had heard anything about it?
https://asianmoviepulse.com/2020/05/live-action-adaptation-of-ghost-hunt-to-be-released-in-japan-in-2021/#google_vignette
Also love what you do! Keep up the good work!
Thanks, Kit xx
Yeah about that... This live action film has been popping up on the net since 2014. There’s been no official news that it’s actually happening. Over the years different celebrities keep being named in articles but none actually ever have any real source to them. It’s all rumors. The link you shared seems to just be a recent remix of the same old lines fed to us since then. The guy in your link sadly died quite recently and he had no promos of Ghost Hunt so I doubt it was ever happening. There’s been no trailers, no promotional images, no official cast, no set directors or writers - The live action film hasn’t even been greenlit. Sadly I doubt it is happening...at least anytime soon. From our source in Japan, we can confirm there’s nothing in the media about a live action. (At least nothing that looks genuine.) The ‘official’ directors keep changing, the main cast actors keep changing, there’s never been anything official, just rumors on the internet, if it was happening, there would be links to live ghost hunt websites, promotional still images of filming, cast interviews, a video trailer, written posts on official media blogs. Maybe it will happen someday? But who knows...right now though, there’s nothing set to say a live action movie will be showing up on our screens anytime soon. Sorry but I think you just got duped by that link. ^_^’’
Ghost Hunt News: Paperback Novel Volume 5
The paperback edition of the 5th novel has been released! Here’s the cover, featuring Masako~
I was hoping there would be more news, or some kind of extra like we’ve been getting along with the previous novel releases, but aside from more audiobook preorders going up, there hasn’t been anything so far. :( Volumes 6 and 7 will both be released in June, so hopefully we’ll get something then? New anime announcement plz??
Speaking of the next two novels, going by precedent (and what makes sense content-wise), I’m guessing Volume 6 will feature Ayako on the cover, and Volume 7 will have Gene. But that would mean Lin and John don’t make it onto any covers this time?? Unless a sequel series gets announced and they’ll get their own covers then? I can dream.
Just a random personal opinion
Ghost hunt anime needs remake treatment like fruits basket. It wasn’t finished either.
Ik many would disagree but I’m just saying.
I miss it T-T
No speak louder! LOUDER!
So many fandoms have had reboots from that era Ghost Hunt definitely deserves a reboot!
(And possibly a continuation of the manga/anime adaptation of the original novel that needs completion)
