my thoughts on the cat in-universe:

yknow that thing nowadays (and probably in all of human-pet relationship history) where dads are always its biggest opp but then weeks later its his bestie?? that was the opposite, vito loves the cat like breathing, mamma c cannot stand her

mamma calls the cat mangy often and from there, i think she’d be called mangia which ofc is sicilian for “eat” bc she likes to eat a lot (then again i have basic knowledge of the language so if this sounds a little ridiculous, my apologies)

the family has had this cat since the children were young

this is vito’s most specialest girl - besides connie

young michael is a little afraid of the cat. he would let her sit near him but if a certain line gets crossed he starts shaking in his boots

he can maybe pet her if vito is holding her but other than that he is downright afraid

fredo loves to play with the cat but stops when he gets a scratch or a cut, not understanding her playfulness all the way and becoming sore at her but then he’ll play all over again and get scratched all over and get upset, it’s a cycle really (mangia tolerates fredo)

the cat hates sonny. sonny doesn’t know why. he tries to pet her nice or give her treats and nothing has won her over.

the cat LOVES tom, this annoys sonny to no end (who is jealous). i think it’s a stray understanding a stray thing. vito and tom love the cat the most of all

the cat becomes connie’s little friend quite fast. when connie gets older, the cat can often be found in her lap, purring as connie strokes her fur

tom takes primary care of mangia after vito passes away, though she does become very depressed when her owner dies, crying in the night and hardly eating

she gets a little more of a spark back when the family move out west but mangia dies not long after the move

mamma c is actually very empathetic when the kids lose their childhood pet and the small funeral they host for her is very sweet
