Rise Against
Blaine watched Kurt exploring his room with satisfaction unfurling in his chest, filling like a balloon full of hope and affection and - not that he’d put real name to it yet even to himself, really - love. His eyes were warm as he tracked Kurt’s movements and he shook his head, tucking his hands into his pockets. “I was never allowed. I mean - ” he grimaced a little to himself in recollection. “At the time it would have caused talk if I had, so I just never did … ” he paused, and watched his boyfriend rifle through his records, pausing on the disco and casting him a coy look that returned a smile and an unrepentant shrug from the vampire.
"Disco’s great. You should give it a chance," he encouraged, leaning his weight against a bedpost and watching Kurt with a smile. He could sense the change in the other boy’s demeanor the instant his fingers hit the record. Blaine tipped his head to the side, an enquiring motion almost bird-like in execution.
"Kurt?"
A beat.
Softly. “Oh.” He followed in Kurt’s footsteps as he moved away and picked up the record in question, sliding the disc free with practiced care and setting it on the track; tipping the needle down with a scratch of vinyl before familiar chords rang out. Blaine approached the other boy from behind, stopping close and holding a hand out so it entered Kurt’s line of sight.
He studied the curve of the other boy’s neck, the dip where it would meet his shoulder were his shirt not covering it; basked for a moment in the sweet scent of him, in the warmth radiating from his body even through layers of clothing.
"Dance with me?" He offered quietly, his palm turned up in question, fingers braced to curl over the other boy’s and draw him around and into an easy stance. It felt a very long way from the high school and Karofsky’s bruising kisses. There was safety here in the warmth of Blaine’s bedroom with its old fashioned hat stand and dusty records. Even Blaine seemed surer of himself here in his own home, in the space that was his and had been his once, when he was still a boy like Kurt was now.
Full of hopes and dreams for the future, mind clouded with the every day concerns of the living, of someone with their entire life spread out before them. There was also something to pity in the rich furnishings, they were the objects and settings of a boy’s bedroom without doubt but there were no hints to who Blaine was; only that he’d been a child with talents for sport and performance; that he’d liked to collect things; Playbills were neatly set on a bookshelf beside old, dog eared paperback novels and a few faded toy cars.
The only hints at this new life he was living were the schools resting on a chair; the clothing peeking out of his wardrobe; bright colors against the duller wallpaper within.
Still, as the curtains fluttered and distantly a dog began to bark, a lawnmower rumbled into life and water bubbled from the fountain in the lush gardens, it felt … easy, to pretend nothing else existed except for the soft lullaby of the music rising around them and the offer of Blaine’s hand.
Kurt looked at Blaine's hand and swallowed thickly. Before he met Blaine he remembered telling his dad that he wanted to be able to walk down the hall with a boy he liked. He wanted to be able to dance with a boy at his prom. This wasn't McKinley high by any means, but there was a boy who made his heart beat faster. It was a safe space. A place where they could be themselves without worry- both because Blaine was far from human and because they were gay. He didn’t have to think about Karofsky’s lips on his or why they’d both run from school. He didn’t have to think about tomorrow.
He could get lost in here and now and Blaine.
Slowly, Kurt slotted his hands into Blaine’s, hands still warm from the blood he’d drank before they’d headed upstairs. He felt human- like a seventeen year old boy. Kurt straightened up and nodded, turning towards Blaine and squeezing his hand once. “Of course I’ll dance with you,” he whispered, his words almost catching in his throat. A part of his mind drifted back to when he was a child, The Beatles playing in the background and his mom moving down to her knees, holding out her hands and dancing along with Kurt to their album.
Taking a deep breath, Kurt slid his arm around Blaine’s middle and moved to rest his chin on his boyfriend’s shoulder, eyes fluttering closed as he felt the warmth of his boyfriend surround him. This is all he ever dreamed of, with a few hang ups, obviously. Kurt didn’t want to think about those now, though. He turned his head and placed a soft kiss to Blaine’s neck, closing his eyes and listening to the music. A soft smile came to his lips as he lifted his head slightly and sang lightly into his boyfriend’s ear, “But of all these friends and lovers, There is no one compares with you…” he pulled back and looked into Blaine’s eyes. Kurt moved his hand to Blaine’s cheek and rested their foreheads together, closing his eyes and letting out a soft breath, “Thank you so much for this.” After everything that had happened this is exactly what he needed.
